Description

Inspired by the skateboarding revolution in India, Girls on Wheels follows three friends who support one another through the ups and downs of learning to skateboard. Anila is on her way to her favorite place: the skate park. She longs to glide on her board and feel the thrill of catching air. But when she arrives, the ramp looks like a concrete sea monster! Fear creeps in, making her once-broken arm ache. But Sana’s smile and Damini’s laugh wrap Anila in courage. Her friends remind her that in skateboarding, sometimes you fall—but sometimes you fly! Srividhya Venkat’s lyrical text and Kate Wadsworth’s vibrant illustrations capture the energy and movement that make this picture book soar. Read more

“When I’m not falling, I’m flying”, says Anila, one of the three friends, in the wonderful picture book GIRLS ON WHEELS, by Venkat & Wadsworth. There’s so much to love in this book: the girl power, the friendship, facing fears, resiliency, the seaside town in India, the adorable girls, the skateboarding, the inspiration (“the skateboarding revolution in India”), the poetic text, dynamic illustrations and more…. A much-needed addition to your home and school library! ... show more

  • friendship, empowerment
I highly enjoyed this picture book with its themes of friendship and empowerment. Children need to see that persistence is important, so when you fail you get up and try again as your determination strengthens. The skateboarding girls in this book were wonderful to follow scene by scene, with illustrations that captured their inner and outer selves. There's back matter about skateboarding facts and the skateboarding scene in India, which added an interesting nonfiction layer to this story. ... show more

  • Beautiful, encouraging story
Excellent picture book about supportive friendships and striving for a goal even after literally falling down. Kids will relate to and learn from the main character’s full range of emotions as she attempts to try skateboarding again after recovering from a skateboarding injury. The writing has a wonderful flow throughout and the illustrations are fantastic. Very highly recommended! ... show more

  • I wish I had this picture book when I was a kid!
With themes of friendship, perseverance, and facing your fears, GIRLS ON WHEELS is an empowering story about three girls from different neighborhoods who spend the day at a skateboard park in a seaside town in India. Author Srividhya Venkat created this story after learning about the skateboard revolution in India and the female skateboarders breaking gender stereotypes. The book’s back matter includes details about the revolution and a bunch of interesting skateboarding facts. Venkat chose strong verbs (diving, soaring, fumbling, stumbling) to show the girls in action, as well as onomatopoeia (whoosh! Clunk!) that kids will love repeating out loud. Through dialogue, the girls share their worries, find solutions to a problem, and cheer each other on while skateboarding. The story is brought to life with dynamic illustrations. Artist Kate Wadsworth captured a variety of emotions on the girls’ expressive faces that kids can identity and relate to. The actions shots of the girls skateboarding are great—including their hair and a hijab flying out behind them as they skate down ramps and tumble to the ground. This is Wadsworth’s debut picture book and I hope to see more books in her future. Overall, GIRLS ON WHEELS is an engaging picture book worth buying for your home library. (An additional way to support the author and illustrator is to request that your local library buys a copy so other people can also discover this book.) ... show more

  • Fun read!
Girls on Wheels is not only a story about skateboarding, but also about friendship, resilience after a setback (one girl is uncertain about starting skating again after recovering from a broken arm - which remind me a lot of when my son broke his foot at gymnastics when he was little and had to confront his feelings about whether or not to try gymnastics again once it was healed), and pushing the boundaries of what the people around you expect. I’m sure there’s a few books out there about skateboarding, but I’ve not come across them, so I think this is pretty unique in the picture book landscape. The illustrations are vibrant and full of fun details that bring the Indian setting to life. As a kid I would have pored over them, reading the graffiti on the walls of the skate park, examining everything for sale in the shops on the way there, etc. If I was still teaching I’d be sure to have this book in my early elementary school classroom. I think my students would have enjoyed the story, the pictures, and the appealingly illustrated list of facts about skateboarding in the back of the book. ... show more

  • Friendship and fearless girl empowerment
I love the characters in this book. It makes their sweet friendship come to life as they overcome teasing boys and personal fears to fly on their boards. It's a charming story about the growing popularity of skateboarding (which I took up at 40 with my son - so fun - and terrifying!) and the power of friendship to keep us going even when we're afraid. This story is fresh and you'll love it ... show more

  • GIRLS ON WHEELS by Srividhya Venkat
GIRLS ON WHEELS is a multi-faceted and powerful story. Srividhya Venkat layers in themes about believing in yourself and perseverance along with friendship, empowerment, and synergy. Kate Wadsworth’s illustrations capture these important messages through her composition, palette, energy and emotion. Readers will enjoy riding along with Damini, Sana, and Anila in the skate park. The fact that the story is inspired by the skateboarding revolution in India and filled with skateboarding fun facts makes it even more enticing! ... show more
