  • I suggest that you choose a location carefully.
Style: 10kw + 100A Switch
The 10KW unit was used for whole house back-up, in our case the 10KW was sufficient for the job, but choose carefully, I suggest that you talk it over with your electrician. This unit sounds like like someone is using a power mower in the yard when we are outside, not a problem inside the house and we chose a location that gives the maximum barrier to the sound for both ourselves and our neighbors. The distance from your existing electrical panel and gas meter will have a huge impact on the cost of installation so once you have selected the location be certain to speak with your electrician and plumber about the cost before you buy the generator. The unit operates perfectly! ... show more

  • A helpful warning!
Style: 10kw + 100A Switch
I did not buy this particular generator, but my house came with a prior generation of Guardian whole-house generator (now long out of production). It recently failed after about 16 years of service. My warning is about the WAY it failed, which could also happen to you, no matter which model of Guardian generator you have (or probably most other brands too). The windings in the stator of the generator (the outer, stationary coils) suffered a broken connection on one leg of the output. This resulted in wild gyrations in voltage on that one leg, with enormous voltage transients and generally flickering power. The ceiling fan and our heat pump both started blowing hard. A substantial (TrippLite) surge-suppressor outlet strip filled the room with smoke. (All the MOVs had blown.) And today I have discovered why three of our our 6 ductless heat pumps won't go into heating mode: The inverter control boards are bad, undoubtedly having been fried. Those boards are $460 each!!! If I were paying an HVAC company to do the work, I would be out maybe $3,000 in repairs. I think everything else in the house survived. The lesson - and my good-Samaritan warning - is to protect your electrical equipment against any crazy voltages that might come out of your generator BEFORE this happens. (With time, it probably will.) The best way to do this seems to be to install a whole-house surge protector on the generator, connected just downstream (on the house-side) of the main breaker on the unit. Eaton makes a nice unit that I'm ordering for our next generator (CHSPT2ULTRA). Alternatively, you could install it on the connection box on the side of your house. Incidentally, I've decided the convenience of having a permanently wired outdoor unit is not worth the inconvenience of dealing with rust and deterioration from weather. I have purchased a rather large, electric start, Westinghouse portable generator that is dual fuel (gasoline/propane), which I can store in the more civilized environment of my garage. I can hook it to the propane connector that fed my Guardian unit, and I can plug it in to the electrical box where the Guardian was connected, using the same transfer switch. I will give up some conveniences, but since I'm the one who has to fix everything in my household, I'm OK with that. ;-) I'll attach my surge protector physically to my generator. I would highly recommend anybody installing one of these Guardian generators install one under the lid, inside the housing. Don't risk all your electronics! I rated 4 stars, which is the average rating. I didn't want to change the average. Until it failed, my generator performed well (again, previous generation). The motor still runs like a top. If you live in a salt environment, I suggest you coat the screws and bolts with fogging oil - or better, hit them with a bit of cosmoline. You DON'T want to disassemble the thing after the hex heads have dissolved into misshapen domes. Also, if your generator develops an obnoxious whine, the way mine did, it's probably because the stator overheated, and the plates of the steel core warped. This probably leads to excessive vibration and metal fatigue in the windings, which leads to the problem I experienced (stator failure). So beware! ... show more
