  • Way more here than meets the eye.
Below is a review that I attempted to post on Generac's site. They rejected it. Why? Judge for yourself. I wanted this unit. I did not expect the unbelievable quote on installation that I received and mine would have been oh so simple. A very good electrician that I have used for years for my business and at my home on multiple occasions purchased a Generac a couple of years ago. He lived in a rural area and wanted the assurance that a generator provides. He was WELL-QUALIFIED to install it himself but....Generac told him that if he did not use their certified installer the warranty would be voided. He did it and paid their price because he already had the unit. On Generac's site, they say that installation can be as "low" as $2,000.00. That, apparently is the bottom range. I guess that I found out what the upper range looks like. You need to know what you are getting into if you go to a retailer and buy the unit. Thought this might help. I purchased a Champion dual fuel 7500w portable and bought it through Amazon. Here is the link..... https://www.amazon.com/Champion-Power-Equipment-100891-7500-Watt/dp/B08HG9VVRZ?th=1. I guess it is close to what you get when you buy an Apple product. You buy into their well-controlled ecosystem where prices are basically fixed and THERE IS NO COMPETITION. When there is no competition prices are ALWAYS too high. See below for the rejected post. "I’m in Georgia. Called Integrated Home Solutions last Friday to get an idea of installation cost for model #6998. We don't need a whole house generator but we have had enough power issues over the years to look for a reliable backup. IHS was one of TWO local dealers in my area that were recommended on the Generac site. We have a perfect spot for placement that is right beside the gas and electric meters on the side of the house. The breaker box is just inside a garage wall and is also about seven or eight feet total from where the generator would be placed. Easy, simple installation, no long trenches needed. So the MSRP of this generator is $2,049.00. A bunch of retailers list it at $1,999.00. Imagine my surprise when the dude who returned my call today (Monday) estimated that they could install this generator all in for around $7,000.00 to $7,500.00. Huh. Really? No thanks. Already ordered a 7500 watt portable (not Generac) and it is scheduled for delivery this Friday. Really wanted the 6998. NEVER at that price." ... show more

  • Do not buy this product
It is the most cheaply made unit that I ever installed ( I installed 3 , 7.5 Generac generators ) The instructions are vague at best . They always refer to a contractor to install the generator . They discourage a home owner from self installation . When this generator runs , it is so loud that my entire neighborhood has to listen to it . If you are looking for a good generator , don’t buy a Generac . ... show more

  • Easy installation, reliable resource!
Installed this without any problems. Has been working every week in “practice” mode, one time for real for several hours outage. Great deal.

  • Burnt Transfer Switch Solenoid due to Factory Assembly Mistake and Poor Generac Service
I got this PowerPact generator (6KW Natural Gas) as I got tired of using a portable 5KW generator for the occasional times we lose power. Our home does not have any major electrical appliances (everything is NG), so 6KW provides enough power for the entire house as long as we are careful about not turning on too many appliances (like a toaster or coffee maker) at the same time. The price was reasonable and there was the added benefit of an 8 circuit automatic transfer switch (ATS). Some things to keep in mind: Even though some of the advertising refers to this unit as being digital, there is very little, if anything, that is digital. The control panel only has a few push button switches and idiot lights. There is no digital display of any kind. There is no engine hour meter to help you monitor the need for oil changes. I purchased an inexpensive digital hour/rpm meter for the generator unit and twin frequency/voltage/amperage meters for the ATS so I could monitor and balance load. And I was surprised to learn after I purchased this that there is no ability to use any kind of wireless app with this unit, nor is there any kind of accessory available from Generac to do this. Wireless apps make it much easy to monitor the device and look at usage history. The other thing to keep in mind is there are very substantial costs in putting in a standby generator even if you do all the work yourself and shop for good prices on materials and supplies. So far, my additional costs have been about $1,300 above the cost of the generator. The single largest cost has been for multi-conductor generator and hook-up wire, which has been about $500. A starter battery and battery heater mat are not included. The battery heater is recommended for any conditions below freezing. You may or may not have to build a separate pad and there are things like any gas fittings and pipe. It all adds up. If you hired someone, the $1,300 cost would probably double at a minimum and maybe triple. So, now the bad news about Generac. I had a solenoid in the ATS box fail while testing. The coil burned up. Upon closer inspection, I could see that two of coil wires were pinched in the subassembly frame during manufacturer. A very clear error. I wish I had seen it before testing as I could probably have removed the subassembly and reassembled it with no pinch. Generac has been terrible. I have sent pictures showing the problem. After seeing the pictures, they said they would have the part replaced and installed. I even offered to send them the offending part and install myself, but they insist on having a dealer do the work. So, it has been over a month and no repair. The Generac agent assigned to this case never replies to emails, answer the phone, or returns calls. This is just miserable warranty service. Nothing like the brochure that describes “24/7, 365 Customer Support Team standing by all-day every-day from our headquarters in Wisconsin to answer any questions you might have.” I have tried finding someone else at Generac to respond or take over. No luck. February 2023 Update: My initial assessment that the relay coil that burnt up was due to a shorted wire turned out not to be true. After removing the relay unit, I could see that those wires were okay. I ended up buying the replacement part and installing it myself. Since then, the unit seems to have worked okay and came on automatically during the few power outages, one of which was 24 hours. It automatically runs ("exercises") itself once a week and has started in 10F weather without a problem, but as noted I have a battery heater under the battery and a high quality battery. For maintenance, I use synthetic oil and have checked the valve adjustment and air filter. Generac eventually reimbursed me for the failed part, but it was a big struggle. ... show more

  • Bad unit, worse customer service.
Constant “overcrank” issues. Customer service sends an authorized technician a new part that takes a month to come in. Tech takes a month to get to your house to install it. A week later, during its weekly test, overcrank again. Cycle repeats for over a year now. Generacs “suggestion” to me is to call a different authorized technician or buy a new generator all together…. ... show more
