  • Good enough for Antarctica...
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I use this for snow research in Antarctica and Greenland. It outputs GPGGA and GPRMC strings at 10 Hz and 38400 baud. So far it is compatible with the GSSI SIR-30 and SIR-4000, not tested with the SIR-3000 I've now bought five units and never had any issues with any of them. The setup is incredibly easy because there is none. Apply power and the unit outputs data right out of the box. (Garmin does have a way to interface with the unit, but I haven't bothered). Bought these to replace some Novatel units that were four times the cost and completely unreliable. It comes with a nice assortment of mounting options - I've used the pole mount option to get the antenna higher off the ground. ... show more

  • Good 3 Meter GPS
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I do GPS scouting and soil sampling on ATVs. I was initially interested in the GPS+GLONASS capabilities, 5 Hertz and 10 Hertz Updates, and the claim of improved accuracy. I have tested many of the Garmin 19x HVS capabilities. POSITIVES The unit appears solid and waterproof. It is easy to mount. It uses NMEA 0183 (selectable version 2 or 3 using the Garmin utility). I have used it at 38400 and 4800 baud with the included jumper and with multiple computer Applications. I like the 5 Hertz Update rate, the GPS track draws smoother (not sure its more accurate at 5 Hertz, just smoother). GLONASS GLONASS was turned off when I received the unit. Using the Garmin utility, I tested GLONASS both on and off. In open fields, GLONASS provides no benefit in my application (I expect the same is true for any GPS application with a clear view of the sky, like a boat). The accuracy with GLONASS turned on was never better than 10 meters (33 feet). The advantage of GPS+GLONASS in this unit is urban (or rural) canyons where only a few satellites in each system are visible. In challenging conditions where it needs both satellite systems to function at all, this unit will do its best. ACCURACY With a clear view of the sky, I measured the GPS+WAAS accuracy at better than 3 meters (2D-RMS-95%). With the same view of the sky and GLONASS turned on, the accuracy was worse than 10 meters. The reason for the worse accuracy is that there are no corrections applied to GLONASS satellites (like WAAS is for GPS) when measurements are combined to calculate a fix. NEGATIVES The statement "since more overhead satellites are now visible, users will see more accurate fixes in challenging conditions" needs the addition "however in less challenging conditions, your accuracy will be much worse". Where I see less than 50% of the sky, and 10 meter accuracy is acceptable, I would turn on GLONASS. SUMMARY Its a good GPS for my scouting applications, and a decent price. I leave GLONASS turned off (as it was configured when I received it). I achieve better than 3 meter accuracy just using GPS+WAAS in my scouting application. I have it mounted with a good view of the sky and the Garmin 19x HVS works fine for my application. ... show more

  • Direct replacement for Ray Marine Raystar 12; Under Deck Mounting is Awesome.
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I replaced my Raymarine 125 GPS Receiver with this unit. Supporting NMEA 0183 it worked as a drop in replacement, just be sure to install the baud rate reducer (reduces to GPS updates at 1x/sec). I used the under deck mounting kit which was very simple and way easier / better to look at than the traditional rail mount GPS units. Great product so far! ... show more

  • Perfect GPS for my TackTick system
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
So I had an older Garmin wired to my TackTick. After 15 faithful years it was time to upgrade. (Still using the old one as backup) I looked at TackTick (Boo $400+, Raymarine same deal) and found this. It has the bare wires to connect to the NMEA. Hooked it up, used the included wire to reduce transmission speed to 4800 and I was up and running in 30 minutes. Had it originally mounted on the stern rail, but now it is mounted in the cabin, under the deck and out of the way. This kit comes with three different mounting options and a ton of cable. If you need a GPS to mount to a plotter or other instruments, this is a winner. And the vendor was also awesome! ... show more

  • It works as a replacement for the Garmin GPS-17!
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
So my trusty Garmin GPS-17 fell victim to a lightening strike and I needed a replacement that would work with my older chart plotter. The GPS-19 was really the only choice other than used 17's. The installation of the GPS-19 proved that it is not an 'exact replacement' as many details vary...from connector sizes to mounting brackets. But the 'secret sauce' is knowing to put in the speed limiting resistor (it was included) in the wiring to slow the data rate. Instructions didn't make clear why you would want to do this, but it turned out to be essential. The Garmin support guy steered me straight in mere seconds. Now it works like a champ! ... show more

  • It's Garmin....What I expected!!
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
Finally got some time to add this to our 2001 Pursuit boat we purchased that had the older model Garmin GPSMAP 2006C and the Garmin 17 antenna. Replaced the 17 antenna that some critter chewed through with this one and fed the wires through using the old wiring, followed the detailed instructions along with the ones we had printed off from the Garmin website.....soldered and heat shrink wrapped all the connections....Once powered up we picked up six satellites and we were under cover!!! Can't wait to get it out on the water and really run through some testing and mark some good fish spots. Thanks Garmin....and Amazon!!! ... show more
