  • Great affordable arbor/arbor for vines
So many mixed reviews about this arch but really the quality of the item relative to its extremely low price is really very good. The segments are metal with an epoxy coating and are rather sturdy once it is all assembled and screwed together. Yes, the instructions benefit from a second (and maybe a third read) read but I assembled the item by myself in under 30 minutes. It's easier to assemble on the floor (as the instructions suggest) and then move it to wherever you need. And if you follow the male-female openings, they fit together quite well. It's a good height but could benefit from being tied to a fence or other stationary post. I was going to use the arch as it was designed but realized that I could create side by side arches and have since ordered another kit to create 4 connecting arches for my various vines. So, here are some notes for the assembly. First, take note of the male/female openings on the longer segments. Start with the top of the arch. Fit the L-shaped connectors BEFORE slipping the plastic sleeves onto the female openings (otherwise the connectors will not slide over the sleeves). Then insert the male end into the female end and keep going with the rest of segments always remembering to slide the L-connectors on before adding another segment with a sleeve on it. For your reference, the ideal spacing between the horizontal bars is noted on the instructions' image of the arch. I did not have a problem with screwing the screws into the L-connectors but do it carefully because I can see how they might break easily as noted by other reviewers. Finally, if you prefer to use the segments and create side by side arches with horizontal connectors in between, please see my image of my completed arch. I did this because my vines were already intertwined in a trellis and I did not want to untangle them at this time so the arches surround the existing trellis structure. And, remember, this is very affordable support for vines but it's not really meant to be an attractive garden structure. It's sturdy enough but probably not strong enough for mature wisteria or heavy weighted vines. I can see this arch doing well with roses, clematis, small grape vines etc. I only paid around $35 on amazon since it was discounted. Who can beat that? (PS. The rods can heat up very quickly if left sitting in the sun while you assemble the unit so be careful. Not sure if this could be a problem with young plants - my plants almost cover the entire arbor.) ... show more

  • After a challenging assembly, it was just what I wanted.
It has been hard to find an arch small enough for the space where my blackberries are (am using to organize my bramble) and so this arch was the logical choice. The arch arrived promptly and looks like the picture, but there were some special challenges to assembly. I am the child of an engineer and grew up having to assemble things so I can put almost anything together and make it work. This arch was unique in its difficulty. First, the instructions are just not clear. Its not a rocket so you can figure it out, but the pictures are not entirely clear and the instructions do not use terms consistently. The manufacturer also has a clever idea of putting tight plastic tubing over the couplings, although I found them impossible to put on because they are too tight. First you have to put them on the thick part of the metal rod, and then when the sections are joined, you have to move them over the junction to keep them water tight. I have burns on my hands from this process, and tried 3&1 oil, and heating them. They just wouldn't budge, so I ended up getting my black gorilla tape out and taping over the junctures instead of using the sleeves provided. You can't see the tape and it was way easier. In addition, the crossbars don't fit tight enough, so I put those in place and put a ring of tape below where I wanted them to sit which also worked well. May not be water tight forever, but as I thought it through, I am not sure keeping the junctures from rusting together is a high priority for me--I plan to keep it put for a while. When you assemble, make sure you have the small ends lined up correctly so they point up on all for posts when you are ready to put the arch on (all 4 arch ends are big ends). When assembling, I did the first side with measurements, and then made the adjustments to the second side by placing it over (see picture). Second picture also shows juncture in arch as it comes (without the protective sleeve) and then as I taped it. The post hole maker was a brilliant idea and it made placing very easy. I'm pleased with it--it just took an extraordinarily long time and a bit of ingenuity to assemble. ... show more

  • Good utility arch, not sure how well plastic connectors will hold up as time goes
Do not expect this to look like a several hundred dollar arch - it is more of the utility arch than a front piece. It looks pretty much like PVC arch, but black. Of course it has metal parts, which are made quite well, but plastic connectors make it look cheap, but well - it is cheap. However, if you will grow some dense growing vines on it, it will look just fine. I bought two for my beans and cucumbers, and other climbing vegetables. I have a small community garden plot, so this will save me space and I will be able to walk under the arches, because I placed them between raised beds. It was pretty easy to assemble, but I did it a bit differently than instructions suggested -I do not think it was possible to do, how they suggested as sleeves wouldn't allow plastic parts to go over them. I made top arch part first, then sides. I was careful with plastic parts because of the reviews, and they were just fine. I like that kits had stakes to drive holes into the ground with marked level on them -very useful. I might use them for other stakes as well. For my purposes, I added twine to them to help plants to hang on better. So for now I am quite pleased with them, just concerned how plastic connectors will hold up, and when they go, will we be able to find something that fits, because they way arches are made, plastic connectors hold all the metal pieces together, no holes to connect them in another way. ... show more
