Description

An unprecedented two-volume exploration of the fungi of temperate Europe Fungi of Temperate Europe is one of the most comprehensive mycological guides ever published. Featuring more than 7,000 photographs, this lavish two-volume set treats more than 2,800 species of fungi across the region. Including agarics, boletes, chanterelles and morels but also more obscure groups such as cyphelloids, cup fungi, pyrenomycetous fungi and hysterioids, this guide takes an unprecedentedly broad approach to communicating fungal diversity. All species are illustrated with one or more photographs and information is given on morphology, ecology and distribution within temperate Europe. Furthermore, 1,500+ species are discussed as potential look-alikes. The books are divided into eighty “form groups,” each starting with an innovative comparison wheel with guiding photos, distinguishing characteristics and drawings of essential microscopic features. Poisonous and edible species are colour coded within the text. Revealing the world of fungi in all its splendour, Fungi of Temperate Europe is a must-have resource for any amateur or professional mycologist. · 7,000+ photographs across 1,700 pages · Colourful, up-close photos unrivaled by other mycological guides · Coverage for 2,800+ fungal species · Innovative and accessible system of identification Read more

  • Highly recommend for people who prefer picture over words
Purchased this after someone shared to my local (New Zealand) fungi group a PDF of the circles from these books. It is a unique way of ID'ing, and I liked the look of them. The authors released them to the public domain. So I planned to print out in color and bind. So I could use them myself. But the printing costs at local print place was going to be $NZ70, so I figured I should just buy them. Finally arrived a few weeks ago via amazon, as I had to place a pre-order due to not yet being printed. They are wonderfully illustrated and I learned that you get both volumes for the ~$NZ110 I paid, which is pretty cool. Have waited a couple of weeks before posting about them since I wanted to use them a few times to see if they are actually good to use, and not just look good. My verdict is that they are wonderfully to use. They are designed for visual work, so focus on photos instead of text. This definitely suits me, and I have found the circle nature of ID'ing much easier to follow that keying things out. This is likely because I am a visual-spatial learning rather than a words person. The only downside is they focus on Europe, so can only really get down to genus level for NZ, although obviously a large percentage of urban fungi are likely to be european. The other downside is they don't use any common names, and common names I find much easier to remember than the scientific, so maybe not a downside as it will force me to learn the proper names. I would call this and Shirley's book on NZ fungi my two books that I will use most going forward. So overall highly recommend even if you don't live in Europe. ... show more

Regards, Ana Maria Gaviria ... show more

  • Love the pictures, a lot of cool new species, descriptions aren't too bad
One of the best mushrooms identification book purchased that I have ever made. That a lot of cool species from EU that come in 2 books for the price that I paid. Pictures were really good, and descriptions are not too bad, well there were some that I wish they would spent more detail on separating similar looking species in one genus. I also like that the books came as hardcover so it probably will last me for a long time. ... show more

  • Best mushroom guide.
I heard about this two volume set from another Author. It's a hefty price tag, but so worth having. The way families are laid out in wheels, makes it so easy to understand and learn. Anyone who wants to learn about mushrooms needs these books.

  • best mushroom book for Europe
Great book. Pics of both top and gills. Well organized. Clear. Includes lookalikes. Not a field guide. You definitely won't fit this in your pocket. But it's an excellent guide. Worth every penny.

  • 2 volume publication! - watch out for sellers overcharging for 1 volume only!!
Great books, as in 2 volumes! I love it! However, make sure you get both volumes! Low lives trying to trick you in overprized 1 book sale!

  • This is a must have set for any fungus lover
I live in the low desert, far from "temperate europe" but this book is very helpful to me. It is very hard to find anyone that knows anything about obscure desert fungus, but now I can at least get to the general ballpark. The illustrations are outstanding and the keys are very user friendly!
