Description

The FT-70DR is a compact System Fusion transceiver providing both conventional analog FM operation and the advanced C4FM Digital mode. The FT-70DR provides up to 5W of reliable RF power, and its large Front Speaker delivers 700mW of Loud Audio Output. Because C4FM has better BER (Bit Error Rate) characteristics than other digital modulations, the user can expect exceptional audio quality. The digital FT-70DR includes Automatic Mode Select (AMS) function. AMS detects the operating mode of the received signal as C4FM Digital or analog FM, and then automatically and instantly switches the receiver to the appropriate mode. Users do not need to manually change between modes. The multi-colored LED Mode-Indicator displayed on the front allows the operator to easily see what mode the FT-70DR is in at any given moment. LED Mode-Indicator clearly and visibly shows the transmit/ receive mode by changing its color so that the operating mode of the transceiver is easily recognized at a glance. One of the other distinguishing features of the FT-70DR is Digital Group Monitor (GM) with DG-ID and DP-ID. DGID (Digital Group Identification) and DP-ID (Digital Personal Identification) are useful features now included in the FT-70DR, to simplify the GM operation. Simply put, the transceivers selecting the same DG-ID or DP-ID can communicate with each other. Between 00 and 99 DG-ID and DP-ID are selectable which provides loads of flexibility so that users can enjoy group communication with friends in GM mode in accordance to their individual operational needs.

    • Great radio, but........
I'm a new ham, and this radio is amazing!!! However, (there's always a catch) the battery life is awful. I've owned ham radios of one kind or another for close to 30 years because I like to use them as "scanners". They are far cheaper than a traditional handheld scanner, (which can easily run $400 or $500 for a really decent one). I finally decided to 'bite the bullet' and get my ticket. I also decided to get a the FT-70D to begin my ham journey. After all these years, and all of the radios I've owned, this one has the worst battery life out of any of them. It's really ashame because Yeasu is a great company, and I've always looked to them for quality and dependability. The quality is there, but they've really dropped the ball regarding the battery. I read other reviews before I bought this radio, and most of them suggested buying an extra battery (some may have been said partly in jest), so I did. I am so glad. I also bought the car charger because I do a lot of driving. It's also important to note that I was unable to get the software to work with the cable that it came with. All in all it really is a great radio. Just keep your eyes open when buying it. Hopefully someone will make another battery that will last longer. In any case I'm definitely making this my go-to HT. Marvelous hand held ham. As with most, it too is a bit complicated until you learn the radio. The compact size and light weight makes it ideal for the portable ham radio operator.

    • and I have to say Im very happy with this radio
This is my second Yaesue HT (other one is an FT-60r), and I have to say Im very happy with this radio. The build and sound quality are very good. The radio is easy to program manually. I tried to use the free software from Yaesu to program the radio, but couldn't get it to work. From my research, I found other's have the same issue with the software. Not a big loss for me, as the radio is easy to program by hand, and its always good to know how to program manually in a pinch. Great way to get into Fusion without breaking the bank. 73's ... show more
