A magical, sentient bracelet is inexplicably wrapped around her arm, and Frey discovers the ability to cast powerful spells and use magic to traverse the sprawling landscapes of Athia. Frey nicknames her new golden companion “Cuff” and sets off to find a way home. Frey soon learns this beautiful land once flourished under the reign of benevolent matriarchs, called Tantas, until a devastating blight relentlessly corrupted everything it touched. The Break transformed animals into beasts, men into monsters, and rich landscapes into four dangerous realms. At the center of their shattered domains, the Tantas now rule as maddened and evil sorceresses. Unaffected by the Break and desperate for answers, Frey reluctantly agrees to help the last remaining citizens of Athia who see her as their only hope. Frey’s journey through this strange and treacherous land will take her deep into the heart of corruption where she must battle monstrous creatures, confront the powerful Tantas, and uncover secrets that awaken something much more from within.

It is a great game. Story is consistent. There are labyrinths, the puzzles, RPG elements, the variety of enemies and the distinction between them against different magical abilities, the amount of detail in the story, magic, very fluid game mechanics with abilities that can be mix-matched and chained together. Not to mention this game really takes advantage of the PS5 controller. You can feel the character walking, the haptic feedback when you are firing or building a explosive magic in your hand, and many others. It really makes you feel the gravity of the heavy elements vs lighter elements that you can rapid-fire. There are details in the game where, for example, you are struggling with an enemy and it hints you that the magic you might be using is not suitable and tells you if the magic was more suited for close or distant encounters. I thought those are great little touches. The design is well thought-out. Once you learn them, you can chain them and mix and match for any combination you like. The story is detailed. For everything you encounter, it develops a well organized archive section where you can access to the backstory for many characters, locations, items, etc. Our hero (trying to pose as anti-hero) is an orphan and her attitude is justified for where she came from and rough life she had to go through by herself, alone. Naturally, she doesn't trust others and it is really hard for her to bond with people given her life experience. There are details in the storytelling actually exposes her good heart under her shell. A hint we get in the story is from Olevia, the little orphan girl she meets who mirrors her inner fragile loving soul. Performance-wise, I didn't experience any glitches playing on PS5 and I am playing on a capable 120hz tv with ray tracing on. Something to note that I didn't get any updates to the game in the last couple days. Normally, modern games have a huge update at release. This one didn't have one so far. I thought that is positive and speaks for its quality. I didn't encounter any bugs or glitches myself given I am close to getting the platinum. You can search for YT for bugs or glitches and make up your own mind. Given my direct experience with the game, I do recommend it, especially to those who enjoy the RPG elements. ... show more

  • Doesn't deserve the hate, a chill but beautifully rendered, fun to play game
This game is awesome! I really don't see why it received the mediocre reviews that it did. I love that I can pick up the game, have fun with the magic parkour and do stylish combos with the various magic that Frey has at her disposal. This a great game to pass the time with and is very accessible to newbies to action rpgs. The story/writing is fairly good, not award winning but it makes sense and has its share of memorable moments. The conversation between Frey and Cuff is snappy, and full of snide remarks (which can be annoying but you can reduce the chatter in the settings). Outside of the combat, the world of Athia is beautiful and really takes advantage of the graphical capabilities of the ps5. I will say that some of the dungeons and forts you encounter are very similar in design which can be redundant (but that's the same with most rpgs). The sound/music is solid but wasn't captivating. It does ramp up appropriately during action sequences and settles nicely during moments of emotional impact. The worst aspect of the game is probably the detour side quests. They are mostly fetch quests that seem inconsequential to the worldbuilding of Forspoken. The best aspect is the combined combat/parkour and exploration of Athia. The true score of this game should be a 4/5 but I'll give it a 5/5 because of the lack of great reviews. Honestly, this game's surface level story is actually a vibe because a lot of AAA games these days take a lot of commitment and hours to get into/complete. You can be done with the game in 20 or you can take your time and rack up 50+ like I did. ... show more

  • Preety good game
This game had so many bad reviews I was hesitant to buy it. I still was intrigued so i decided to get it. It's much better than I thought it would be and kinda of addicting. It had some good RPG elements to its and customizing your gear is pretty cool so you have chooses and what you want to wear. Its not like one thing makes you more powerful because you can customize anything to be equal in powering you stats. The combat is very good and can get quite challenging with some enemies Also the world is so huge its open world and its quite big. Traversing the world with magic parkour is fun. The art can be very good in some parts of the world its a nice looking game for sure. The story is fine the voice acting is great, but it seemed a bit rushed at the end like they wanted to get it over with, and its not a very long game for just the main story. The say Frey isn't a likable character and that's why the game us bad, but she is pretty likable and can be kinda of funny. There where times when I didn't like her, but thats makes the game better. Basically you are Frey you playing as her. Yeah this could of been a better game, but I appreciate what they did with the game. Its worth buying and playing it is fun. ... show more

  • A successor to inFamous
Forspoken has wonderful and engaging gameplay that seems to go forgotten beneath the overly scathing criticism. The story is a little bland if you’re familiar with Isekai stories from Japanese anime, but that is only a minor hindrance. Both of the main leads Frey and Cuff have decent banter that was the source of a lot of excessive criticism from the Internet at large, but it’s really just fine. I set the banter on the “high” setting and never became bothered by it in my 30 hours with the game. Exploration was initially a great motivation to make progress, but the open world started to lose its charm for me by the time I was half way through. Its redeeming feature is that the magical parkour remains fun with the slow introduction of new movement abilities. Forspoken’s weakest link was its beginning. It takes between half an hour and an hour to even reach the magical new world of Athia, but even after reaching the world you’re still at least two hours off from being able to explore it. I was decently patient with it as I was playing through, but even I couldn’t help but demand freedom by the end of it. Forspoken’s greatest strength, and the thing that made me enjoy it as much as I did was the combat and the powers. I felt like I was back in 2013 playing inFamous 2 for the first time. You can be as tricky or straightforward as you want, taking advantage of the environment all the while. Your collection of powers slowly expands, and you have the ability to strengthen the powers you do have by completing quests. This is honestly amazing. If you’re still on the fence, there is a demo. Get a taste of the gameplay, and use that as motivation to get through the slog of an intro. ... show more

  • From someone who actually owns and is playing the game and
So far I’m 30 hours into the game. The dialogue being bad is overblown. If you have played another game from square enix titled Nier Replicant you can get a gist of what to expect. The main character Frey has a talking companion named vanbrace which is the golden snake cuff around her arm. They go back and forth throughout the game and it is very similar to the main character in Nier Replicant having various conversations with the talking gimmore in that game. The dialogue is varied enough that there isn’t too much repeat in conversations. Otherwise, gameplay is where the game truly shines. Finally a game where Square Enix has nailed the combat in an action game. Unlike the demo, the game eases you into the spells and mechanics without overwhelming you. There is a lot to choose from, and it’s fun trying to combine them against various enemies. Over the course of the game, you start to feel unstoppable as she becomes stronger and able to traverse to word with ease. Quests, or detours as they call them in the game, are actually interesting to take part of. They do a great job of expanding the lore while also breathing life into the various side characters you interact with. There is a lot to do and the game map is GIGANTIC. There is always something new to discover. Despite the overworld being a bit desolate, it does a great job of placing secrets and treasures just out of reach for you to explore and obtain. In the end, I am completely enjoying the game and it makes me wonder why the reviews were as low as they are because this is probably Square’s best attempt at an open world JRPG yet with so much to offer. ... show more

  • Worth Playing for $20
It's a decent game, with some serious issues. It could be a great game if some things are cleaned up & fixed. The Good: 1) The magic system is fun, at least for awhile. 2) The game world is huge, and visually stunning. 3) You can keep yourself busy for awhile without advancing the main quest. 4) There are tons of spells to use fighting enemies. 5) You can defeat enemies many different ways. 6) You are constantly upgrading the many items you will find. 7)The Parkour system is innovative and cool. The bad: 1) It's hard to care much about the main character. They made her annoying and sad. 2)Most of the enemies are the same thing with slight differences. 3)The world is big, but it's not that exciting. It's all the same thing after awhile. 4) The pacing of the game is weird. 5) I found that 90% of the cloaks and necklaces were basically the same thing. 6) Basically anything you find in the game makes no difference in the end. 7) I thought the game story sucked. It's a decent game that gets old quick. If you can buy it cheap, it's worth a play. It will get repetitious fast. I wish they made a smaller world with more in it, and added some better quests. ... show more
