Description

The Forestone material is a mixture of synthetic resin and wood fiber, more than 50 percent of which is bamboo. It is tasteless, odorless and non-toxic. The exceptional sound, resilience and flexibility of Forestone reeds is due mainly to this special material. Forestone reeds are made by a proprietary process developed in Japan resulting in optimally smooth vamps that are uniform and consistent, reed to reed. They are perfectly balanced side to side and front to back. The profile tapers to a 0.1 mm thickness across the tip. Held up to light, the reeds display the classic upside-down-U shape associated with cane reeds. FEEL The difference in feel between Forestone and cane is minimal. That said, we recommend to take some time to get comfortable with Forestone, in the same way you would with any new equipment. ADJUSTMENT Blowing resistance can be adjusted with Forestone reeds by slightly raising or lowering the reed on the mouthpiece table (lower = less resistance, higher = more resistance). The material is also sufficiently hard that you can use your usual reed tools for adjustment. LONGEVITY The life of a Forestone reed will vary from player to player but will outlast cane as the material is impervious to breakdown by saliva and will not warp due to changes in humidity or altitude. After a certain number of hours, however, the reeds will begin to feel less lively and responsive. This signals the time has come to retire the reed in favor of a newer one. MODELS Traditional: French filed cut and is very free blowing for easy playing. It has a bright round sound. Hinoki: American unfiled cut, for a lively response and a free sound. More character and dynamic range than the Traditional model. Black Bamboo: French filed cut, More resistance and more control. It produces a dark classical sound. White Bamboo: French filed cut with a Lively response and a free sound. This is the all- rounder, made for use in all styles.

  • Excels at two things
Size: MH
As of 100120: PRO: 1) Very quick speaking. Unlike traditional Vandoren Java reeds I've relied on for many years, these Hinoki MH reeds require nearly no warm up. As soon as they pick up a bit of your body heat, they're talking. No soaking, no pre-wetting, no pre-playing beyond say 15-seconds. It's as if I'd already prepped them. It's spooky. I just pick up my horn cold and play. It was a bit un-nerving at first, as it's not what I'm used to. But...ha, ha...I quickly got over that and am spoiled now. Have tried both the MH (medium hard) and MS (medium soft) and prefer the MH for it's staying power. I may try their harder range, but for now, the Hinoki MH is it on my Drake Bergonzi #8 2) Consistent throughout the range of the horn. Easily sings altissimo and jumps down to Low B-flat. Lovely that these Hinoki play with less qualm and fine tuning of my embouchure. They're highly accurate without coaxing. I just love these Hinoki. Switched over from Vandoren Java about a year ago. That says a lot as Vandoren makes some of the finest gear on planet earth. Forestone has joined them and done it with their own innovative technology. CON: A) At $28 for one single reed––the same price you can easily buy almost any five-count box of harvested reeds or sometimes two boxes when they're on sale––it gives pause. Once I experienced the PRO's above and realized that one reed can last as long as a box of harvested reeds, I am now a fan. ... show more

  • Better Reed
Size: MS
This is now my go-to read. It plays better than my wooden reeds and it’s hard to believe it’s synthetic. Absolutely love that I can just put on, pick up and play. I will have a hard time going back to a traditional reed.

  • Forestone Hinoki really are fantastic
Size: MS
CONS: I don't like the price. PROS: BUT, compared to other reeds a musician may find, I am quite amazed and extremely pleased with Forestone Hinoki. The other Forestone reeds (white bamboo, black bamboo) I have not tried. This is only about Forestone's HINOKI version. I've been playing tenor for 15 years and have used almost every brand reed you can think of including the synthetics. I had settled for years on Vandoren Java (a very fine company and excellent reeds). Then I found Forestone's HINOKI reed. It is the *only* reed I've ever played that: 1) fulfills the promise of quick speaking, great control, luscious sound in all registers, consistency, and long lasting 2) comes close to my lust for the perfect reed It improves with a bit of warming up. Literally. My body warmth seems to wake up the Hinoki reed––responsive right out of the box––but in about a couple of minutes between my lips it's just more responsive from then on. OVERALL: the best synthetic I've ever played, and given its quickness to speak, tone, long-lasting nature, the best read overall that I've come across. ... show more
