  • Sounds pretty good

I installed this exhaust on a 2 door 2013 Rubicon with 36k miles (a little rust) and a Teraflex 2.5" lift. I did it alone on the garage floor with hand tools, angle grinder, and a dremel. Removing the old exhaust takes the most time. The rubber exhaust hanger are a pain but can be removed with a pry bar. I had no luck removing the bolts on the exhaust clamps so I just cut the clamps with a dremel tool cut-off wheel. I loosened the skid plate near the y pipe and drooped it down a little to squeeze out the front portion of the old exhaust. Then you just wrestle the muffler and forward portion out by twisting back n forth. Installation was easier. I cut the long straight pipe a little less than recommended at first but found that their recommended cut length was correct. when routing the rear portion over the swaybar I found that it was nearly resting on the sway bar no matter how I adjusted it. I tightened everything down and started it up. It didn't rattle against the swaybar under most conditions but sometimes did. I considered putting washers under the sway bar mount to create space but I instead ordered some rear sway bar drop spacers from Metalcloak that are intended for a different application but worked perfectly to create plenty of space in this application. I don't believe the spacers have any adverse effects on the rear suspension geometry with the Teraflex 2.5" coil lift (with longer sway bar end links). I don't think it would be a problem with any set-up really though. Flowmaster should include similar spacers in this kit. That is why I subtracted a star. The sound is subjective but I would say that it is louder than the popular magnaflow axle back kit, but not really loud at all idling. It has a very deep idle sound for a V6. It get's pretty loud under heavy acceleration. It can produce subtle crackles and pops when letting off the gas even in an automatic. The sound does change a bit after about 100 miles. Seems a little quieter at idle now. It can drone slightly at a very specific rpm if purposely kept there but I doubt most would notice it. I don't consider the sound ricer at all. It sounds more like an old truck than ricer. The way it tucks up into the Jeep is really good for off-road. I can't imagine it being possible to hang it up on anything. When you're lifted and have some nice components underneath it's also kinda nice to get that ugly, stock, school bus muffler, out of the view. I would recommend this kit if you've got the tools to cut and fit this on a 2 door and you're willing to buy the sway bar drop spacers. ... show more

I started this job thinking it was going to be fairly strait forward. It couldn’t be further from the truth. Removing the factory exhaust from those rubber hangers is about as daunting as it gets. Buy the right tool to get the job done spray those hangers with WD-40 15 minutes ahead of time inside and out to let it soak in. I began to build the Flowmaster kit. My first mistake was not cleaning the factory y Pipe to remove all rust. Clean the pipe really well or you won’t get a good seal. sand paper would have been a good option. At this point I put on my first piece of the puzzle on, make sure it’s seated in very well there’s usually a tab on the top of the y pipe that inserts with a slot on the flow-master pipe. Perhaps I should have ground down that tab with a Dremel tool until it was flush with the factory y pipe. because it sticks up as an intrusion that dose not allow the clamp to seal properly. After piecing the exhaust together from front to the back of the vehicle I had a few clearance issues above my rear axle at the control arm I’m guessing because I didn’t get the pipes pressed in far enough in between each segment. I recommend really working in those pipes Together before tightening those clamps. It was now time to tighten all the clamps up. I began to realize no matter how hard I tightened them I could not stop the vehicle from leaking exhaust between the y pipe and the muffler. If it dose not seal properly this exhaust will sound dreadful. I used a vacuum in reverse into the tail pipe and began to spray all the fittings with a soapy water solution from a spray bottle to check for leaks. bubbles flowed out of every seam. It was at this point I realized I had a problem and began continually tightening those clamps down over and over until I began breaking them because I could not get them tight enough to stop the leaks. I had broken three out of four clamps and just gave up and went to a local exhaust shop because the rattling and drone was just to much. I felt like I was losing power as well. I just wanted to relocate the rear muffler for better clearance for off roading not to wake the Neighbors. I read through some of the comments on Amazon and found one in which the customer used the factory resonator before the Flowmaster exhaust. I asked my exhaust specialist if he could do the same. As you guessed by the photo provided he did. The drone is practically gone the tone is beautiful and it’s not so loud the neighbors hate you. I’m happy with it. If you want very loud then I would not recommend doing this as it cuts the noise by half. This is a photo with the factory resonator before the muffler. It Just another option. Good luck hope this helps! ... show more
