  • An excellent 4K printer with a few small caveats
Size: Foto 8.9
Let's do the tldr first; this printer has excellent print quality, slightly spoiled by a poor app and some questionable design choices. 1) Unboxing is simple, and the packaging is excellent. Even though the outside of your box may look a little rough, you'll be happy when you see the inside as it'll be in great condition. 2) Setup was a breeze. The box includes the printer, the resin vat, print bed, small tool bag, scrapers, a flash drive (more on that in a moment), and a manual. 3) I started trying to print one of the samples on the flash drive, but kept running into issues. The drive loaded, and it showed the sample prints, but not the previews of the print on the screen. I copied new prints to the drive, and had the same issue. At first, I thought the printer was having issues because the network port was incredibly slow when sending a file to the printer when the delivered flash drive was in it. Eventually I used my own flash drive and it worked right away. Network prints were fine and the screen shows the previews. 4) The screen and the OS are a bit disappointing. There don't appear to be any network settings, no firmware settings screen, no network information. You can see the print files on the drive, set print bed height and calibration and some other basic print settings, but that is about it. You'll have to consult your router if your want the IP address, and you are stuck using DHCP apparently because there is no place to change the IP. If there is a way to do this, it is hidden away as it isn't on their site or in the manual. 5) Network prints are a tad misleading as it doesn't actually PRINT from the network, it just sends a file to the flash drive where you can then print it yourself. You can't change any settings over the network or check the printer status or the status of your print jobs. It is send and forget. 6) Print quality is what you'd expect from a 4K printer - amazing. Using Anycubic resin, I've made a bunch of great quality prints, and gone through several bottles of resin already. After each bottle, I cleaned the resin vat and wiped down the FEP film. On the 4th bottle I started seeing failed prints. Keep in mind that I only use new resin, and a fully clean film. Of course, as with any resin printer, there is no way to see the print job when printing, so you either need to pause to check, or just gamble. After another full cleaning session, print jobs were back to normal. Of course, the printer is a bit messy. The print bed picks up a lot of resin and it'll drip down into the vat for a while. One annoying thing is that the mid-mounted frame that holds the bed to the gantry has a lot of nooks and crannies, and is a real pain to clean. I've gone through a ton of towels trying to get resin out of it. You'll definitely need a drip tray if you remove the print bed to pull a print off of it as the whole print bed will be covered in resin. 7) Annoyances: The printer is so new that it doesn't even have a support section on the Flashforge site, so no way to read the manual before buying. It is also too new to have any spare parts available like a sore resin vat or original FEP film. Other printers like Elegoo have whole assortments of parts and accessories, so be aware what you are getting into. As with other printers, the resin evaporates a lot when the lid is on (as it should be) and it'll need a good cleaning every couple of days. I'm a little worried about the seal around the 4K display as it appears to just be some electrical tape, and any drips of resin are bound to get into the printer. Make sure you order things like resin filters, paper towels, scrapers, spare FEP film, a silicone mat, and more gloves. Lots and lots of gloves. And finally, I do recommend getting a curing station for the printer or building some kind of manual rig to wash and cure your prints. Without that, at least get yourself a bunch of isopropyl alcohol to clean things. ... show more

  • Avoid this Printer

You would think that 'Flashforge' a recognized name in 3D printing, had a great deal when you see the listing. You might also think that after opening the box and slicing your file you will be greeted with a pretty print. If you thought this, you were wrong, just like I was. Firstly, there is in fact a shortlist of positives that I will get out of the way first. The printer did come well packaged and with a very nice white and black design that seems very elegant. Everything was packaged well and the material choices seemed to be acceptable by normal standards of 3d Printing. Last of the positives are the very much appreciated vat standoffs, which really are a benefit to functionality and implemented in a sleek way. However, this is where all the positives end and the long list of negatives begins. First, immediately upon bootup, the lack of quality control seemed to be apparent. The power supply sent with my unit has a very high pitch buzzing noise that constantly emanated from it whenever the machine is on standby. It seems that this does not affect the power delivery to the machine, but it is a constant annoyance. Next. there is the fact that out of the box the printer says it runs on its proprietary .fdg. This is blatantly false with the model I was sent. Using both Chitubox and the flashforge slicer, I had sliced and exported the .fdg file to the USB and the file would not even show up on the print selection screen. Some searching through google showed other people that have experienced this same problem and needed to convert the slicers to export .svg file instead. After doing this, rather easily, the printer could recognize the file and begin to attempt printing. When it actually went to print here is where the most frustrating experience happened. The first obstacle I ran into when physically trying to print, was the original FEP film on the bed was very loose. I replaced that immediately. The next problem I ran into was the most egregious. All other things could have been forgiven if this was not an issue. After fixing the file format, after replacing the FEP, after tweaking settings endlessly, after installing and reinstalling multiple versions of firmware, the printer still continued to fail me. I discovered that the printer did not recognize the support structures when printing. To show you in better detail I have added a few pictures into this review. I recognized this first examing that my LED array was working properly. After I confirmed that it was, I attempted to run a print without the bed or vat on the machine so that I could observe the screen. (note: do not do this unless have the proper protective eye equipment like 405nm UV blocking glasses) As I was observing the screen I noticed my screen was not changing for an of the support layers and only for the portions that have the object. I proved this by placing one object flat on the bed and the same object on a support frame with a raft. This proved my thesis when the one flat on the bed printed during the first layers and the one with the supports did not. This problem appears to be within how the machine interprets the files from the slicer, and thus outside of my hands of fixing on my own. If I or the support team can't resolve this issue before my return window I will be forced to send it back. In conclusion, the machine had promise but ruined its chances with this broken software. I hope that there will grow a community out of this troubled product, but some core fundementals need to be fixed before that can be achieved. ... show more

  • Zero control of basic mSLA printing variables
Size: Foto 8.9
There is absolutely no way to affect the lift or retract speed. Files sliced in Chitubox do print, bit no settings changed besides exposure have any effect. Native slicer, FlashDLPrint, does not have options for lift or retract speed. Other settings are also non-existent, such as anti-aliasing. TLDR: Spend the extra $100 and buy a Saturn or Mono X. I returned the printer and am ordering a Saturn. ... show more

  • Don't buy if you are a beginner or need instruction.

My partner and I have spent many hours over the last week trying to figure out why we cannot get this to work. It is not user friendly for beginners. There is very little information on line and the user manual was poorly translated into English and doesn't make sense.

Set up was a little hard and it took a while to get printing. the USB drive it came with had to be formatted after getting the software off of it but after getting set up and figuring out the software it prints beautifully.
