I bought these kits for each of my two grandsons for Christmas. They're fortunate to live near several fishing destinations within a short walk from home and big enough to supervise themselves for an afternoon of fishing fun. I visited last summer and taught them the importance of throwing fish back after catching if they were not going to be eaten. I told them that it was better to share the fish by letting someone else catch and release it or catch it again another day rather than deplete the local fishery. The kids have cell phones with cameras that they can prove their catch to friends, but capturing the weights and lengths of fish in photos is impossible. The kit comes with a carrying case and includes a scale that is quite accurate and a tape measure is built-in for added function. It also comes with pliers and a fish gripper which are important for catch-and-release fishing. Hooks can be easily removed with the pliers and the fish gripper allows you to handle the fish while removing a hook without causing the fish injury before returning it to water.     • The pliers are very weak. Overall, Ok I guess.
Since I fish for large cod on the west coast of California, the plies left much to be desired. If on the other hand, fishing for blue gill or small pan fish, these would be just fine.
