  • Overall Pretty Happy
So far I am pretty impressed and happy with the rig. I just bought the BMCC 2.5k and wanted a rig and looked all over and decided to give this a try because of the price and everything you get with it. Below are my initial thoughts and experience as I have been piecing my rig together. I am new to this so experienced people probably wouldn't get hung up on some of the things I did, but I see this as a rig for beginners like me, who are starting out and learning as they go. So here is my experience so far: It only took me about a 30-45min to put it together and the instructions were pretty much on point. Only hang up was I didn't realize at first that the rails were threaded but came with protector caps and the instructions didn't say to remove any caps so when it told me to connect them I was a little confused but it only took a minute to figure that out. Build quality seems pretty good. The only place I have concerns is the flat join where the main rig connects offset to the shoulder rest and batter pack. That piece is plastic and when resting on the ground seems like it has the potential to eventually snap, so I am going to have to be carful when putting this down that I have it supported properly. I bought the Switronix PB70-BMCC to accompany this since it is listed as a package and seemed to have good reviews, but I still haven't figured out how to attach it to the plate. The instructions don't cover this, that I noticed, so I am guessing I am going to have to buy something else to make that happen. Also when mounted to the shoulder plate, the batter cable to the camera that comes with the battery, is not nearly long enough to reach the camera. I had to order an extender to make that distance. You will notice in my image that I actually have the battery strapped to the shoulder pad right now, since I am waiting for my extender to come. Also, my Rode Video Mic isn't hooked up since I also need to buy a 3.5mm to 1/4 inch. I am impressed with the quality and feel of the follow focus. I will say though that the over all weight of the the rig when on your shoulder makes it really difficult to adjust focus. If you let go of one of the handles it is very unbalanced and doesn't stay level. One other thing. I bought the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 to go with this camera since the BMCC is a crop sensor and I needed a wider shot. I plan on this being my primary lens but when used with the matte box sleeve and follow focus, it gets all bunched up because there just isn't enough room. So if you have shorter lenses that you use, you might run into this same issue. The only other thing with the matte box and I haven't been able to figure out where the problem lies, is that after I got it all put together the camera/lens is not directly centered in the opening for the matte box, it is just a little off to the right. When close enough to the matte box it isn't a problem, but putting the lens so close, contributes to the hood bunching issue. I am hoping I just didn't get something on straight and this isn't a design issue. I am pretty short 5' 7", so my reach is short. Where this comes into play is when using this as a shoulder rig. If the shoulder pad is further back, to make viewing the screen easier, my hands are extended pretty far and my arms wear out pretty fast. If I move the pad closer, so my arms are extended as far, I find myself bending my neck back to see the screen better so my eyes and neck get tired. I think this is only short person problem and I think I will find a happy medium. ... show more

  • Decent. Screw threading for top handle broke within a week or two.
I use this kit a lot. It’s actually a good rig. The follow focus is functional. The tubing is good. The handles are okay (I already replaced them with a different brand I like better) but I don’t like that they twist to tighten because they sometime come loose when I’m removing of putting on the rig. My biggest complaint is the material used. The threading for the top screw holes are all stripped. They’re used to attached the top handle. The center holes’ thread stripped off fairly quickly, within a week or two. I felt that the handle was loose and upon unscrewing it, I noticed the threading from the screw holes was still attached to the screws, the holes no longer functional. I moved the handle to one side of the top, within a couple days, the same thing occurred again. The metal material isn’t strong enough to holds it threads with the weight of the rig and the camera. Another thing I’ve noticed is that this isn’t really built for zoom lens that extend. I don’t own a Cine zoom lens so I’m unsure if they change size (telescope) like photography lens I’ve tried in this. It’s the Matte Box, it not designed to have a long lens on there (the elastic fabric bridging the Matte Box to the Lens is very short) and when you zoom out, the Matte Box tends to crop some of the image. It’s take a little tweaking to work with a zoom lens (I can’t fully zoom with all my lens) but it functions adequately otherwise. I can aduridly say that this will definitely smooth out your hand-held footage. Three points of contact tighten everything up and give you a much more fluid feel. It’s no steadycam and will require practice to actually improve your footage, but a shoulder mounted rig is definitely a necessity for all filmmakers. ... show more

  • Worth the $250? I dunno, but it's pretty decent
I shoot narrative work like 3-4 times a week. I've had this for like 2 months now and my biggest problem with this thing are the screws. They don't match any typical allen wrenches that most people have. I had to go to the hardware store and they had such a hard time finding the right size. And the screws themselves are an odd length, the only ones I could find are too long so I had to jimmy rig it. So if you ever lose any screws or the allen wrench that goes with it, prepare to lose your freaking mind. I have no idea why they have these screws that don't match every film equipment/ or even anything that has ever been made's specs. Another thing are the handle bars. Sometimes they sort of slide loose but just by a little bit. Not that much and it's definitely not THAT big of a deal but it's worth mentioning. Shoulder pad hurts after a while, but that's any shoulder rig if you have it on for too long. Other then that it's really durable and a pretty nice shoulder rig. Love the follow focus and the handle bar. Matte box is pretty decent. I dunno if it's worth the $250. I think they should knock like $75 but hey. It doesn't come with instructions either. Very weird. ... show more

  • It is solid and feels like a unit double the price
I'm thouroughly impressed with this rig. Spent a huge amount of time looking over all the options and, ultimately, decided on the cheaper road, knowing I'd likely be buying an inferior rig. I've only just assembled it, but I have to write and say how well engineered this thing is. It is solid and feels like a unit double the price. The matte box and follow focus alone are worth the purchase. Would buy again based on first impressions. I'll write back if it falls apart on the film set. There has to be a catch for this price, right?! ... show more

  • More than what the doctor ordered.
Separately, this package could've easily added up to over a thousand dollars... only "wish", not a complaint, is that maybe, just maybe some instructions could've been included. But a quick visit to YouTube and I had it all together in an hour and even figured out many of the optional ways to transform it into a half a dozen other items I "was" thinking about buying. My advice... get two. One for now and one in case someone realizes that this could be sold for much, much more. ... show more
