I bought this for my 11-year-old son who forgot about all his other Christmas gifts when he got his hands on it. First let me be the next to join the quality train by confirming that the quality is very good indeed. It's basic. It's simple. But it's built very well and it sounds just great. You'll need to tune it first, so familiarize yourself with the tuner before you jump right in. You won't like the sound of it out of tune. The guitar itself is very nicely assembled from quality materials. The finish of the body is really lovely, with the wood-grain showing through the rich red coating. Once again, hardware is basic but is sturdy and works perfectly. The little practice amp with its overdrive circuit is enough to put a grin on your future rocker's face without driving you out of your house or apartment. I would highly recommend this kit to anyone who has more than a passing interest in electric guitar. I just love watching my son's interest and talent develop as he enjoys this guitar! ... show more

The only advice I would have for Squier is they should go ahead and ship Guitar with decent strings. Im a novice player and noticed right off I needed new strings in order for the guitar to have a tone you would expect. The seller ships fast and the packaging was more than suitable to make sure there was not going to be any damage in route. I would have given this a 5 star for a beginner guitar if the strings had been decent out of the box. The good news is decent strings are cheap and easy to put on even if you never did it before, google is your friend for instructions if you need them. ... show more

I can't rate this very high... I wanted to, because it's not priced high, but it had issues right out of the box... It couldn't be tuned... The neck was loose along with other bolts. The bridge is garbage and held the strings loose so that also added to tuning frustrations. And the strings are thin and weak. So after a week of my daught thinking she wasn't tuning it right, I had to take it to a guitar builder friend of mine to have it fixed right.... I don't know, I think if someone is trying to learn, like my daughter, who had no idea it was the guitar and not her with the problem, it would lead to a frustrated self taught beginner. I mean, it's a cheap guitar, but expect to take it somewhere to make it right.... You may be better off buying a good used one for the same price and buy an amp separately.. This is an absolutely beautiful guitar. I mean it's stunning! In all seriousness, pictures on the web do not to this color justice. I call it a TARDIS blue that's semi-transparent, meaning that you see the awesome blue first, and then the wood grain showing through takes it to the next level. Other than that, it's a Squier *by* Fender, not a Fender by Fender. I knew that when I bought it, so I don't compare this to a true Fender. It holds a tune well, is easy to play, and it's a ton of kit for the money. I've included a photo of mine in the sunlight (along with an after-market Imperial crest decal from Amazon I cut and added). ... show more

    • A lot for the money, glad I bought it
I bought this 4 months ago not knowing if I would stick with learning guitar. I bought the rock prodigy app for my iPad which has turned out to be an outstanding app for learning guitar. Now I've decided to keep learning and just moved up to a better, more expensive guitar. But this starter one Is great bargain and what I needed to help me decide if I would stick with it or not .The tuner quit after 2 hours but there are free tuner apps out there that work great so that did not bother me. The only con in my opinion is that my guitar/amp combo hums . That's why I later went with a more expensive guitar with active pickups. I would still recommend this combo to anyone just starting out on guitar. I think the amp is fine, despite what other reviewers say. I also have a fender mustang 2 amp. And while the mustang amp sounds clearer and louder , the amp included with this kit is totally fine for someone just starting out. And its loud enough for me too . The only addition to this kit you need is a guitar stand. Amazon sells some good ones for about $13. The guitar looks well made. I can't see any flaws no matter how close I look. The rounded edges on this guitar and its light weight make it very comfortable to hold while playing. It comes set up to play. All I had to do was tweak the tuning a bit and it was ready to play. The cable that attaches to the amp easily fell out and thus in the middle of playing the amp turns off. I replaced the first one I bought, but the replacement had the exact same problem. I was reduced to taping the cable on but it still disconnected. It was discouraging to have the amp turn off when you’re trying to encourage a child to practice his music. When contacted, Fender had the decency to send me a better cable. After 8 months of playing using the new cable that Fender sent me (at no additional cost), we are very happy with the guitar and amp. For a 9 - 10 year old, it has been what we would expect for a beginner’s instrument. My child’s hands seem very comfortable holding and playing the guitar. ... show more
