In recent years, paddleboarding has really gained some traction, and now there are more choices than ever when it comes to inflatable models. Believe it or not, there's more to paddleboards than meets the eye, but here are some things that you should keep in mind regardless of your SUP needs and experience. The vast, vast majority of iSUPs (Inflatable Stand Up Paddleboard) are made of PVC. Almost all iSUPs available for purchase today are drop-stitched. These are fibers that run vertically between the top and bottom of the board to increase rigidity. If it's not drop stitched, don't even consider it. Double and triple layer boards are exactly that, they use additional layers of PVC in their construction. Additional layers are stronger (more puncture resistant) and can add some stiffness, but it also means more weight. Double layer is standard for most boards. Those are the basics. There are extra elements that can actually set the board apart from others. Things like additional stringers (layers of material - PVC that run the middle length of the board) that add rigidity without lots of additional weight, or side rails (the side section that runs the entire length of the board) that contribute to the stability, speed, and maneuverability of the board. Also consider the overall construction and design of the board. Radio-welded seams are far preferable to glue as it physically melds the two layers into one piece (gluing is a layer of adhesive between layers). Thickness greatly effects volume (thus capacity), certain shapes are better for certain purposes (more rocker for rivers/whitewater, etc.) The width also effects overall stability, but keep in mind that this will also affect how far you have to reach to paddle (wider boards aren't great for shorter paddlers). Lastly, be cognizant of proprietary parts (fins, valves) which may make it difficult or impossible to find replacement parts should you need them. That's pretty much it when it comes to materials and construction. From an surface accessories perspective, you should consider how you will be using this board. Will it just be for standing up? or will you want to sit down? You can often buy a seat for your paddleboard, but it would be of no use if you can't mount it. Look for things like D-rings and where they are placed to ensure they support your needs. Bungee cords are convenient for storing things by holding them down and while just about all boards have them in the front, not all have them on the back end. The paddle should always be adjustable to suit a riders of differing heights and for different modes (sitting vs standing.) If it doesn't come with an adjust paddle, don't even consider it. So how does this board by FeelFire stack up? Well from a construction perspective, it definitely passes with flying colors. This iSUP has drop stitching, triple-layer stringers, and double side rails. The paddle is 3-piece adjustable, and there are bungee cords both on front and back (note: heavier items like coolers and tackle boxes should be stored on the back end.) Additional Zinc-alloy D-rings are installed at the center of the board to attach accessories like a kayak seat, or a strap to facilitate carrying, and there is also a handle on the front allowing you to drag it out of the water from either the front or the back. This is both a longer and wider board at 11'L × 34"W and is really designed for 2-3 people, which makes this great for the small family (pets included!) From a usage perspective, the included high pressure pump is still a bit of a workout, and it took me about 15 minutes to pump it up to the full 15psi. If you can't or simply don't want to exert yourself, you may want to consider investing in an electric pump for this task. The pump is also dual mode which means it can be used to deflate it as well, so be sure to insert the proper end of the hose attaching it to the pump.

True confession. I own four inflatable SUPs. I started paddle boarding with a friend who had two SUPs. I bought my first SUP as a birthday gift to myself. I went to a big retailer and bought the same brand that my friend has. No names, but it rhymes with boat. And it was not a cheap purchase. Then I decided that I would also like a spare board so that I could share the joy like my friend did with me. I didn't want to spend big bucks on an occasional spare board so I bought a less expensive one online. And it was just fine for an extra board. But then I didn't have enough boards for when all my adult kiddos were home. So I ordered this board. And I liked it so much that I ordered another exactly like it. And now, my expensive original board is my spare and this is my go-to board. So ... what's so great about this board? It's a little bit longer for a smoother, faster ride and a little bit wider for some extra stability. You wouldn't think that would make that much of a difference, but it does. Extras that make this the board you want: bungees front and back, handles on both ends plus the middle, D rings for kayak seat, large diamond-pattern foot pad, US-style fin (so you can change fin style), comfortable tether, roomy backpack. The kit comes with everything you need to get out on the water except for a personal flotation device. The board inflates easily. But don't use the manual pump. Do yourself a favor and get an electric pump. Spend more time on the water and less time pumping. The US fin can be a little finicky the first time you use it but easy to figure out and I think gives more control. Phone pouch is a nice bonus. I have used this board both weekend days and an occasional week night every week this summer. It has held up well. This is the board that I now recommend to the newbies that I get hooked on paddleboarding.
