I love this razor. But some context. I am 70 years old and started shaving in 1965. At that time practically every man in the United States who was wet shaving shaved with a double-edged safety razor and I was no exception. Then in 1972 Gillette's "Trac 2" hit the market and the whole lamentable process of emasculation by whisker removal began. (Cartridge razors!) By the 20-teens the not-so-subtle virtue signaling of the men's grooming product industry combined with the outrageous price of their cartridge razors made me head back to the double-edged safety razor. But, as a retiree, I had more time to shave and wanted more control in my shaving. So I tried my hand at "REALLY" old-school straight razor shaving. After slicing myself up a bit I got the hang of it and enjoyed the control I had. However, my beard is tough and it wasn't long before my straight razor needed to be re-honed. It sat in my drawer and I went back to my double-edged safety razor. Then I heard of the Feather SS "shavette". A proprietary blade by Feather slips into a knife-like shaving head. I got the Japanese-style razor which is a single knife-like piece. Wow! I can change the blade as often or as seldom as I want. The single knife structure gives me more control over my shave than I have ever had. Terrific shaver! Highly recommended! ... show more

    • Not for beginners but a nice touch to a basic collection
UPDATE 12-2019.. its been a while. And i still agree with the fact this is hard to get used to if you arent used to straight handled razors. Its easy for me to use and by far my favorite to shave with. Not for beginners.. but.. its a great shaver once u figure out the angles and how to keep them ( its because of the different muscle memory is all).. i reccomend this on every level. Yes I ranked the scores low for this razor... Yes I gave it 5 stars... Why? I have been straight razor shaving for almost a year now and have become to love the hobby of shaving with de and se. This razor is not for beginners.. It's very difficult to use and not comfortable. For me.. I love it and everything about it. When I picked a se up for the first time it was hard... But not difficult to get an angle( may have been a near 90 degree angle but I could fine one lol).. With this it's very hard to get an angle and keep it. But the shave is amazing if you know what you are doing.. I have the folding type feather also and it's much easier to shave with.. I just wanted something cooler... But this razor is amazing but in no way for a beginner.. It's very hard to get the angle with.. And awkward at best.. Would I recommend this razor? Yep.. After a minimum of 4-6 mos shaving... It's nice.. But not easily controlled... Is all this because am acclimated to the folding life style?? Idk.. You be the judge.. ... show more

My first shave with the Feather was tonight and I'm still alive to tell the tale! I been exclusively using double-edge blades for years and decided to break into single-edge shaving gently. This Feather is excellent for the novice to start out with. Combined with the entry-level ProGuard blades and you are good to go. I watched a few online videos and made a couple of passes w/o the blade first. I'm right handed so using my left hand was challenging for that side of my face. I took my time with short strokes as advised. The handle is rubberized and doesn't slip when wet. The slight curve provides excellent position. Blade replacement is easy. Squeeze the top and the blade drops out. Line up the new blade injector and slide forward. Easy peasy. You will need some sort of blade disposal bank or small sharps container. My first shave was very good. But I did manage to narrow my sideburns too much on the left. I also nicked myself just below my nose. No continued bleeding. A alum block made quick work of my mistakes. No throat or neck irritation. Once I get more proficient and less fearful I should be able to accomplish a BBS (baby butt smooth) shave every time. My only complaint is that a blade/head guard is not included. A guard is absolutely necessary to protect the blade and you. ... show more

    • I got used to it pretty quick
I like modern style Gillette 4 blade razor but it gets quickly clogged with hairs and starts pulling hair when shaving after a week amount of pause. This single blade was a bit difficult to use at first and I have paid my price with blood, but from 3rd time on, it felt like I've been doing this all the time. After first pass with this straight razor, I don't bother to go against the grain. I can simply wipe my face and use Gillette's four blader which can finish up much quicker. It's the big rough work this single blade is good at. I'd recommend this to any one who got tired of Gillette's pulling hair for shaving some longer hair. ... show more

    • Impressive professional blade for shaves and hair
As a professional barber I had been told about this type of straight razor, it's build quality and the fact the blade was closer to that of the original solid blade. The blades to fit these are slightly more expensive but this can obviously be incorporated into any pricing of service. The straight razor is very comfortable to use, of good build quality as would be expected from Feather. The shave style will take a little getting used to but you will not be disappointed. I was recently on an advanced cutting course where one aspect was cutting ladies/ longer hair with a straight blade. I took this blade along and the people on the course were impressed and asked where I had got it from as they do were impressed by the quality etc. The Feather SS gave great results and can therefore also be recommended for those that use a razor in hair styling. Great product at the right price. If you are paying $150 or even £'s for these type of razors you are being ripped off, this price is about right! I will be buying again in the future. ... show more
