Description

Made by Americans of European, African, Native and Hispanic heritage, these quilts and bedcovers range from family heirlooms to acts of political protest, each with its own story to tellA New York Magazine 2021 holiday gift guide pick A mother stitches a few lines of prayer into a bedcover for her son serving in the Union army during the Civil War. A formerly enslaved African American woman creates a quilt populated by Biblical figures alongside celestial events. A quilted Lady Liberty, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln mark the resignation of Richard Nixon. These are just a few of the diverse and sometimes hidden stories of the American experience told by quilts and bedcovers from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Spanning more than 400 years, the 58 works of textile art in this book express the personal narratives of their makers and owners and connect to broader stories of global trade, immigration, industry, marginalization, and territorial and cultural expansion. Artists include: Faith Ringgold, Sanford Biggers, Irene Williams, Bisa Butler, Harry Tyler, Harriet Powers, Marie D. Webster, Marguerite Zorach, Dorothy Phillips Haagensen, Rachel Cary George, Florence Peto, Creola Pettway, Susan Hoffman, Molly Upton, Nancy Crasco, Agusta Agustsson, Edward Larson, Michael James, Virginia Jacobs and Carla Hemlock. • Exceptional Quality for the Price
The major bookstore had this book for double the price. The book was received as stated and was of exceptional quality. The gift recipient was very pleased.

  • stunning book, absolutely worth the price!
This book is incredibly beautiful, I received it 3 days ago and have already recommended it to countless other quilters. The photos are gorgeous, with most quilts having a full two page detail spread in addition to the whole quilt photo, and the write-ups are fascinating. I do wish that the sizes of the quilts were included, just to give a better sense of scale. (ie, the write up states that Bisa Butler's To God And Truth is her largest work to date, but doesn't actually say how large it is) I was happy to see work by artists who I already admired, such as Faith Ringgold, Molly Upton, and Bisa Butler, but also a ton of artists who I am now excited to learn more about. For anyone who wants more of Bisa Butler's work, I recommend ordering the exhibition catalogue from her first solo show at the Art Institute of Chicago, "Bisa Butler: Portraits". The museum shop also has postcards and prints of her most popular quilts, which I am excited to hang on my wall! ... show more

  • It was not what I was looking for.
I wanted information about Bisu Butler.

  • Cover is misleading, this doesn’t have hardly any modern quilts in it
I was expecting more quilts like Bisa Butler’s, more modern and interesting. This is just a standard quilt history book with the same old museum quilts in every other book about famous old quilts. The cover is very misleading.
