The design acts like a self leading screw. You don't have to push down to get it started. Roots might present a problem but, that's not a fault of the tool. When it bottoms out, pull straight up. The remaining plug will break up when shaken out. Would definitely recommend.

This was easy to put together and easy for me as a little lady to use even on hard AZ clay dirt riddled with rocks. It’s a great arm and ab workout. If you have rock solid ground like this you may want to chop the top of the soil just a bit so the tendrils can dig in and work their magic. I love it! Having a hand tiller like this is essential for spots that a larger powered tiller isn't able to get into. It's bulb planting time here, and my elderly mom has been busy getting ready to plant. This is one of her favorite tools to use to get into tight spots we can't reach with the big tiller. Compared to something like a rake or pitchfork, this is MUCH easier for her to use. She's 76 but active, especially when it comes to gardening. This tool allows her to easily and quickly break up soil as long as it isn't compacted to the point it's like concrete. Soil like that or with too much clay content is out of the working range of this hand tiller. You might be able to stab it into the ground, but when you try to twist you can feel the tines begin to bend. On the other hand, you can break this tool down for storage in a protective tote or bag (neither comes with the tool) when not in use. For areas that have been planted/worked before and just need a good 'fluffing' of the soil, this hand tiller works well. It's quick to assemble, and being that it does come in multiple pieces it allows for a few inches of play regarding height. The rubber coated handles help with grip, though it would've been more helpful to have the molded style with finger grips. That's just personal preference since that style of grip is easier for my mom to use. She prefers the lighter weight of this hand tiller compared to the other we have. That one feels like it's made from cast iron and is a beast to work. She finds it way too heavy to work with, and is really glad to have this one now for fall planting. Being easier to wield allows her to work through a larger area without straining her shoulders or back. I wish this were one solid piece instead of multiple. It might be better for shipping, but not for strength. The areas where the screws go in to hold the pieces together are weak points. The casted, solid one-piece hand tillers are beefier and weigh at least twice, if not thrice, what this hand tiller weighs. They also cost around twice as much and have to be properly maintained to avoid any kind of rust. This tiller just needs to be rinsed off and checked for paint chipping. It’s a really great tool. I used it for digging holes and tilling the soil with Bermuda grass invading. Helpful with the roots. Directions were easy to follow and Installment was easy less than 10 minutes! Although it won’t be screwed in tight enough so I used this method of tightening.
