Description

The most rustic looking of popular exterior shutter styles, board and batten house shutters were the most common type of shutter in America until the mid-18th century, when lighter and open louver shutters became more common. The board and batten shutters could be bolted and were thick, sturdy and good at protecting homes from inclement weather and intruders. Today they are most often used as ornamentation that brings back the charm of that era in our history. Style and Function Although the name board and batten makes you think wood, as they were originally made from wood boards, they are often made today in inexpensive and durable vinyl. Exterior vinyl shutters, made of urethane materials, are resistant to cracking or rotting from sun or water damage, and require less maintenance than traditional wood shutters. Home improvement stores offer a wide variety of board and batten shutters. Widths of these types of house shutters usually vary more than louvered or raised panel shutters, and really allow you to achieve a unique look through the different sizes and styles. Some board and batten shutters have spaces between the vertical boards, to allow sunlight and air to pass through.

I love that I found these blue shutters that match exactly the color of our old ones but the old ones were painted and old . I love the farmhouse style to these . So these were so nice they came a colored polyurethane but sturdy, my husband put them up pretty easy and the 3 horizontal pieces snap on after screws are put in . Came with the screws . Main reason we did this upgrade is the window installers did not seal our new window correctly due to old shutters. So we took off the old ones, my husband sealed up the window and new shutters look so amazing !!! ... show more

We were replacing some very old wooden shutters with these new plastic ones. They are board and batten so you have three cross pieces that hold the four vertical slats. However the cross pieces are only designed to go into the outside slats, but they do not go into the two inside slats. So the inside slats are loose and will be more subject to warping over time from weather. Also only plastic screws were provided which are entirely useless for almost any wall material. There should have been metal screws provided as well but were not. These are very inferior quality shutters overall and I would not recommend them. ... show more

These were easy to paint but are pretty flimsy. Mine arrived with about a two inch piece chipped off on the edge. I glued it because I didn’t feel like hassling with a return and was ready to start my project. But they are not very sturdy. We’ll see how they last on the house.
