Oh man, I seriously underestimated this lil critter. I don't really care for traditional FM synthesis sounds, so I was a little hesitant to pull the trigger on the Digitone. I have some other Elektron gear and thought it might make a best friend for my Digitakt. Well, it is. It is the perfect complement to the Digitakt and Analog 4. The Digitakt sequences eight MIDI channels which is perfectly suited to the Digitone's 4 Tracks, and the Analog 4's four tracks. I'm using it as my texture machine. When you start patching in the LFO's to all the FM parameters, it get really wacky in the best possible way. I don't know that I would make it my first purchase starting into hardware, but I would wholeheartedly recommend it as the number one choice as a second device. Short version: It's really good. Can do classic and weird sounds. The Elektron sequencer will open a whole new whole new world of awesome like Aladdin and Jasmine riding a magic carpet to a dance club. ... show more

As people say, Elektron has its own way of doing things. If you're good with that, this instrument has incredible sounds. True Yamaha-style FM 4-op algorithms (like my old FB-01 module) with fully configurable, very analog-sounding VCFs. Sublime ambient stereo effects. The sequencer is often good enough to be your "brain" in a live or studio setup. Graphical editor for you Mac or PC, and a plug-in for your DAW to "seamlessly integrate" with virtual instruments. This box is great for a beginner and if you mess with the p-locks it can do drums and be a whole groovebox. I've just gotten into synthesizers and I find this so inspirational for crafting sounds. You can take umbrage as some things and it is a simplified box, but that also makes it easy to get into the groove. Great upgrade for someone who was using the Novation Circuit like myself (and the Circuit makes a great controller for it). ... show more

While the Digitone has a bit of a learning curve, especially if this is your first Elektron box, it is worth the time to learn. The Digitone paired perfectly with the Syntakt, as I didn't want to go the sample route of Digitakt. My only gripe, I prefer the Black/White OLED screens on the Syntakt/Octatrack, not the Yellow screens on the Digi's. Maybe someday we will get a Syntone. ;) ... show more

Elektron build quality is amazing and the work flow of creating music on their boxes is extremely fun.
