  • Experienced Musician, Highly Recommend!
Color: Bombshell Blue
After reading reviews from less expensive instruments, I chose this one- I liked the addition of a speaker, extra strings, the ability to play with or without the speaker, etc. For background- I have played for many years; since I was 9 and now I am 50. I am playing for a wedding that will be held in a barn and wanted a bigger sound. My own violin is a great instrument and I have a special bow made by a famous bow maker....so, I was a little hesitant, but thought this would add some fun to my practice. The violin was delivered last night (2 days early), in a nice package. I opened it up and was pleasantly surprised. The instrument was protected under velvet and the bow was carefully placed as not to be loose in the case. I threw some rosin on the bow (it didn't take a lot), tuned the violin, and plugged it in. Considering this was my first time playing an electric violin, it was extremely easy to figure out. I played for the next three hours....messed around with different sounds on the amp and found one that will be absolutely perfect for the wedding. I played it with and without the amp, and it has a decent sound. It definitely has a nicer sound quality and sounds like a more expensive instrument. I actually changed my rating from 4 stars to 5 because towards the end of my 3 hour practice, I messed with the amp some and while playing, it went out a few times. The amp itself didn't go out, but it showed some different things on the screen, and to be fair, I need to slow down and read the directions- I can't take away a star because it may not be anything at all. In fact, when I opened up the package, there was a note saying that they had run out of the amp it was supposed to come with so I was automatically upgraded to a nicer amp for no extra cost. One thing I didn't add is that, even though I have an excellent bow, the bow that it came with is a great second bow. So.....five stars. Very happy. I know I will enjoy playing this instrument. ... show more

  • You won't give Isaac Stern a run for his money on this, but you'll save lots of money instead
Color: Jet Black
I bought this item after having tried a $60 model (I know) with a fingerboard that wasn't even on straight. I wanted a "silent" instrument for practice that would be quieter than a muted acoustic to save my hearing and my sanity, since I am new to the violin (am conservatory-trained pianist). I opted to skip the Cecilio-range violins ($140 or so) because they seem to have similar construction issues and went straight to the Bunnel. The craftsmanship is solid on this violin--everything is aligned, the wood feels like wood (you'd be amazed what passes for "wood"), everything plays as it should. It is heavier than an acoustic for sure even without a battery. Kennedy strings the violin and even rosins up the bow for you so it truly is ready to play straight out of the box. I have snapped strings in hot weather before, so I would wait a day or two before tuning the strings up all the way, especially the E string. The bow is quite nice and is probably the best part of this outfit. The case is light (hygrometer a nice plus) and will do just fine if you are not traveling worldwide or a zillion times a day. You should change the strings (and even the bridge) to whatever suits your fancy the best, and that will be true no matter what instrument you buy. I repeat, this will be true no matter what instrument you buy. You may want a more slanted bridge if you are an absolute beginner; this one is quite flat and will challenge your bowing skills. Honestly, I am not fond of the Prelude strings but I am a hopeless snob. I would NOT invest in Evah Pirazzi strings for this, but Alphayue strings are $20 or so for a set and have been getting rave reviews for their sound. The sound level is comparable to, not quieter than, a muted acoustic. I put a rubber mute on it and that makes me a very happy camper. The amp--I don't see why I would use it. Either invest in a bigger amp or just use headphones. Personally, I think it plays loud enough not to need headphones. It won't disturb your neighbors, but it might disturb you, lol! Am a classical music professional, just so you know. This is my second purchase from Kennedy Violins, and they do seem to go out of their way to make you happy. The shipping carton has a seal on it so you know if anything might be damaged in transit. They have support hotlines for every conceivable issue, so I feel like they have my back should something go wrong. But nothing has... ... show more

  • Great Deal for the Price!
Color: Bombshell Blue
My son has been playing violin for years and he recently received this as a Christmas gift. The violin itself is great! We have had no problems at all. His instructor (a professional musician) is also impressed with the quality of the instrument considering the low cost. The amp leaves a little to be desired. I think he will save up and purchase a high quality one. At one point the violin stopped playing through the amp. The amp worked with other things so we called Kennedy Violins and got a return call within an hour. Zach walked me through several troubleshooting techniques and was patient and kind. The whole time he was reassuring that if nothing worked, they would be happy to send a replacement. Turns out the issue was user error- violin battery was drained (duh!) and no replacement was necessary. The fact that they are 3000 miles from us but still willing to do whatever it takes to right the situation will keep us as loyal customers! I've read the bad reviews and none of those apply to us. We've had only a positive experience with the instrument and the customer service. ... show more

  • Very good violin for beginners
Color: Jet Black
Bought this violin to learn - hopefully without driving everyone in the house crazy. With headphone plugged in you can hear it in the next room when the house is quiet. If someone is watching TV at normal volume in the next room, the sound level is acceptable. Several reviews criticized the headphones; they're not high end, but are acceptable. The case is much nicer than expected. The bow is decent. The violin itself isn't professional grade, but is much better than most beginner's violins I looked at. The strings weren't fabulous, but for the price, they were not bad. I ordered this violin from Kennedy largely because the reviews said the supplier was good about having it arrive with strings in place and the bridge installed at the proper angle. They did not disappoint. This is an excellent buy for a beginner. When you order also order peg drops, an inexpensive digital tuner, and some medium grade strings. ... show more

  • Ok to start, but get better
Color: Rockstar Red
I bought this as my first violin after being away for about 30 years. Playing with our church band. It was ok, but very brassy intro the sound board. I put a mute on it and that helped. After a year playing this, I bought a professional level Acoustic Electric violin. Much better choice. Look into something like the Glasser AE or AEX (available on Amazon, or check out ElectricViolinShop.com) ... show more

  • Exceeded expectations. Great customer service!
Color: Bombshell Blue
I was expecting a good product because of all the positive reviews, but this electric violin outfit by far exceeded my expectations. First of all I was excited to find in the packing box, a sturdy violin case with a beautiful interior and ample room for accessories, including a large zippered outside compartment for music. (I own several cases and none have this much room for stuff). The best part of this outfit is that with only a little tuning, it really did come ready to play out of the case, as promised—unlike other low-priced electric violin outfits that reviewers complained about. The folks at Kennedy tune the instrument before it is sent out, which meant that I was able to retune 3 of the strings with the fine tuners alone without having to turn the pegs. (It comes with fine tuners on all 4 strings). It came with a horse hair bow, rosin, carrying straps for back packing and ,surprisingly, a mini-amplifier, as well—small enough to fit into my suitcase when I fly. I prefer an accoustic fiddle to play Old-time music, but this electric violin meets my need to practice quietly— I live in a mobile home park with too near neighbors. The soft sound of the strings unamplified can't be heard outside, but with the earphones on I can hear it as loud as I like. The almost best part of my experience with Kennedy Violins is the customer service. I didn't think the amplifier worked. I called them and quickly got a real person. The fellow who answered said he'd send me a new amplifier right away and a free postage sticker to send the original one back. In the meantime, I checked the 12V battery in the amplifier again and discovered it was shrink wrapped for transport. Nothing wrong with the amplifier. I quickly called to tell them and got a woman this time and told her what happened and not to send a new one. A few minutes later, the original guy called to make sure it was working, and followed this with an email. AND they are sending me a gift of pedals for the amplifier! ... show more

  • The item is very well built. The Amplifier needs some additional work.
Color: Sunrise
The item itself exceeded my expectations with pretty decent sound and quality. The only issue is the new amplifier that has some charging problems which supposedly would be resolved in a new version soon.

  • Best customer service!
Color: Rockstar Red
I’ve been playing violin for over 30 years, and electric violin for about 15 of those. My old electric violin’s pickup died on me, and I needed a new one quickly for upcoming performances. The older electric violin was well over $1000 when I bought it, but seeing as I have children now, that definitely wasn’t in my budget. I ordered this one partly because of the warranty it had on it. When it first came, I was really impressed with how it was packaged. But when I went to plug it into the mini amp provided, I had no output coming from the violin. After some basic troubleshooting, I emailed Kennedy violins to see if I was missing something. They responded first thing next business day saying they were shipping me a new one. I got it less than three days later. This new one worked as soon as I plugged it in. FANTASTIC customer service! I will definitely be ordering from them again. As for the violin itself, it’s a good deal for the price. It’s definitely not designed as a professional level instrument, but it sounds good for intermediate level playing. I would not recommend this while in for a beginner, because it’s electric. You’re much better off learning on an acoustic than adding on electric. But if it’s your first foray into electric violins for an experienced player, this is a great deal! ... show more
