Top Amazon Reviews

  • Excited to Receive -- Then Disappointed
Style: 6-Port Mobile Charging Case with Adaptor
To begin this review, let me say that I am a huge fan of Ego products and I own many Ego products. Of relevance for this review, I also own a Z6 Zero Turn Rider (ZT4204L) that came with a CHV1600 Wall Mounted charger that can be used to charge the batteries stored in this CHU6001. I've been looking for a storage + charging solution for the batteries I have, and I've liked the 6-bay charging capability of the Z6. So, when I saw that EGO had the CHU6000 in the European market, I decided that was a perfect solution and have been waiting for release in the US market. That release came recently with model CHU6001 (the product purchased and being reviewed). I've very much been looking forward to finally getting one of these. The CHU6001 is about the size of a normal foot locker. It's able to charge 6 batteries at once. It feels heavy duty, has nice handles (not concerned about them breaking), and has some wheels so it can roll around if picking up one side of the box (like luggage rollers, only the handles don't extend out like most luggage). You can use the Z6 wall mounted charger with the box, or the included ACA1000 adapter. The wall charger will work much faster than the ACA1000. If you already have one of the EGO riding mowers, than you will know what to expect with the charging bays. Opening the box, I immediately noticed something that, while it doesn't affect performance, annoys me. If you look at my pictures, you'll see that the model number "CHU6000" is emblazoned on the lid of the box. That's nice, except that's the wrong model number. You can also see a picture of the cardboard packaging box where it is clearly a CHU6001 model. So I'm assuming this is a lid repurposed from the European model. Having the wrong model number so prominently visible on this product is a disappointment. Moving on to a slightly more serious problem, notice the picture I've included that is a closeup of the lid closed onto the box. I've included my finger in the picture. In this picture, I'm trying to show that the lid does not naturally close onto the box perfectly - rather it closes offset with the box base. Because of this offset, to close the box correctly, I have to push on the left side of the lid to align it with the box. From a practical standpoint, if I close the latches on the right side of the box first, then the left latches will be so out of alignment with the box that I can't close them. To successfully close the lid, I have to push the left side of the lid, then close the left latches, and then close the right latches. Given the cost of this product, I was pretty disappointed that there was any problem with lid alignment. Finally, moving to the problem that caused me to return this product and give it a low score, is the charging bays. It turns out that the middle back charging bay will not charge batteries (the other 5 bays work as expected). A battery in the back middle bay will light during charging, but it will never actually charge, and when the cycle is done my wall mounted charger will show red lights indicating a problem. I tried all sorts of combinations of batteries in the bays ... no batteries in the bays except the back middle bay, all bays with batteries, etc. I ruled out the batteries being a problem -- I could simply move them to another bay in the CHU6001 or use a different charger with no problem. Of course, I have no problem charging in all 6 bays in the Z6 riding mower. So the item has a defective bay ... and given that the charging bays are the primary feature of this product, this is a critically defective product. To sum up my review, I really like the idea of the CHU6001, and I hope to get another one after going through the refund/return process for this unit. For now, given the wrong model number printed on the lid, the misalignment of the lid to the body, and a charging bay that doesn't work - I am giving this product the lowest score possible. When/if I get this product again, I'll update this review. ... show more
