My child loves this book and pen set. Lining up the pen with the smaller dots to answer the question is a great way to help work on fine motor skills. Sometimes it takes quite a few tries for little ones to get the pen to recognize the dot the child is trying for, even if it looks like they're right on the dot, so some patience may be required on the part of the child to keep trying it. The book covers letters, numbers, shapes, addition, subtraction, and a few other things. Some pages may be a little advanced for Kinder age, but still a good way to introduce new concepts. The pen is super loud! I haven't found a way to turn down the beeps and noises. The book is small and could fit in a purse or bag if we want to take it with us for an on-the-go activity. I got the Kindergarten and the First Grade Essentials Hot Dots for my kindergartner. He quickly learned everything that the Kindergarten book had to offer and he’s now on the First Grade book. I find it to be a good educational toy and my son enjoys using it. Just as it was the case with the Kindergarten book the dots need to be precisely pressed on with the pen. If my son is even a tiny bit off the dot, or sometimes even on the very edge of the dot he gets the sound response corresponding with the wrong answer when he answered the question correctly. As for difficulty, I find most of the material appropriate for first grade learning. Some of the math material seems a little too easy for first grade, such as simple addition and subtraction (0-10) or find and count basic geometric shapes activities. ... show more

so i originally thought that this would actually speak to us but it does not. it gives you jingles to let you know if you are right or wrong and the light turns green or red at the same time. you can turn the sound off, thankfully, because my six year old likes this way too much. Once i told her a few times what the top of the page was asking for (middle sound, beginning sound, etc) then she pretty much memorized what she was supposed to do. she hasnt memorized the answers in order yet but even if she does, shes still learning a lot with this little book. its super mobile, so she likes taking it in the car. nice sturdy pages, i think itll last longer than she will need it. ... show more

I try to find activities to occupy my kids so that they don't keep asking for TV time. This is a good educational tool with an interactive pen while the kid learns words and numbers(Addition and subtraction).

I ordered both the kindergarten and 1st grade edition of these books but I received two of the same books the 1st grade edition and no kindergarten one. My daughter enjoys answering the questions and seeing the green light when she gets an answer right. But you have to hit the dot just right cause if you are even just a little bit off it will show a red light like you chose the wrong answer even though it is the right answer but you have to be very precise with hitting the dot. Also it did not come with batteries which is really inconvenient. It requires 2 AAA batteries and you will need a small screwdriver as well to open the battery compartment. ... show more

We have found a few pages that the pen does not work on. Seems to be the pages we're not programed into the pen or perhaps me just have a faulty pen or book for that matter. If it were to work as it should this would be a 5 star product.

These are well made, age appropriate and a great idea but I didn't realize that the pen doesn't explain anything, it just makes a noise and lights up red if child chooses wrong answer and lights up green if the child picks the correct answer. It doesn't even make the letter sounds :( other than that they are ok. ... show more
