These are actually better trail shoes than full-on hiking boots. For simple dirt trails they’re perfect, providing enough support for uneven surfaces and comfortable enough for a full day out. For steep climbs on rocky and rugged pathways or where you’ll have a heavy load, your ankles and feet will need a stiffer midsole with more lateral support, I’m not convinced these boots will remain sturdy enough as long term keepers. I took them on only one such hike (for a day, but on very rocky and steep terrain) and they did fine - were actually quite comfy on the plus side - but they’re a bit soft and don't need much break-in (they feel good right out of the box - usually a boon for most shoes) which makes me nervous about depending on them for days of serious hiking. Also the grommets are plastic, not brass. But they seem sturdy enough. I had some annoying chafing on the left heel but that’s not the boots' fault, as my left foot is a bit smaller than my right so I occasionally have rubbing back there anyway. The size/fit is right on the money. I’m a 9. And these 9’s fit me like a glove. My only niggling complaint is in the aesthetic details of the shoe. As you can see from the photos I took when I unboxed the boots, there are bits of glue visible. No, it’s not a big deal for a hiking boot and if this were a generic hiking boot I wouldn’t even care. But it’s Eddie Bauer and they’re getting a few bucks more for that name, so I think the details should also matter more. Don’t you?

I loved the price I was paying for these being on sale but was disappointed when they arrived and were "too small"! I wear a size 12 but because I need insole supports in some shoes, I always get a size larger and have a little extra room in the toe area. I purchased a size 13 and they were too tight in length and width. Then I realized they were made in China where items often run smaller than the posted size. I returned these and went with the Columbia Newton Ridge Plus which fit perfectly! Make sure to go up a couple of sizes if you purchase these.
