Very sensitive, will go off in my kitchen with the slightest amount of smoke. Be sure to maintain good ventilation and use your hood fan even if you don't think you need it. The 2nd unit was installed in my bedroom. Be aware that it flashes a red light every 30 seconds. The light casts roughly 10 inches diameter on the side of the unit. If you're a light sleeper and get distracted by flashing lights while asleep or falling asleep choose a different unit. At the end of the day I want a unit that is SUPER LOUD and sensitive, so it works for me. My girlfriend wears a sleep mask so she doesn't mind. It works for me but I'm a heavy sleeper.
