  • Basic chromatic glockenspiel
Color: Black
This is an ok basic chromatic glockenspiel for students just starting out with mallet percussion. The notes are basically in tune, some bars are a bit flat and others a bit sharp, but no glaring bad notes. The bars are rather small, so some precision is required to get a good clear note. The instrument is fairly quiet since there is no resonator box. The case is very basic but it works. Overall I'd say it's a good step up for a kid who has already gotten comfortable with the usual color-coded diatonic instrument and wants to move up to something more flexible and challenging. ... show more

  • KidsPlay colors, wood frame, nice case, good sound
Color: Muti
I'm a music teacher, so I prioritize reviewing products I can use with my students. I recieved this instrument free via Amazon Vine. This is a nice chromatic bellset. The colors match the KidsPlay bells, so not quite the same as Chromanotes, which is what the Prodigies Music program and boomwhackers use, but it's close, and I've been able to use KidsPlay instruments along with Chromanotes ones in the past. Each bar is labeled with both fixed do solfege (C=do) and letter name. This would be a good instrument for students age 5 and up doing the level 2 Prodigies music curriculum, where chromatics are needed-it would likely be frustrating for preschoolers. The frame is wood vs plastic like most inexpensive bellsets. The range is similar to an alto glockenspiel, and it could be used in Orff arrangements to play glockenspiel parts, but, of course, doesn't have the removable bars. The tone is suitably "bell-like", in tune and clear. The sound is comparable to the plastic frame Sonor Kinderglockenspiel, but not as rich as the wood box ones (which makes sense, since it is a similar price point). The case is padded fabric with a zipper closure. It would be easy for a child to carry around. Mallets are wood handles and heads and are serviceable, but I will probably replace with rubber head ones in my classroom for volume reasons, something parents may wish to consider. Overall, this is a reasonable child's instrument or musical toy. It's not a student bellset for percussion study, nor is it intended to be, but it is a reasonable starting point. It would also be a good addition to a classroom collection for a teacher on a budget, to get instruments into the hands of more students while building an Orff instrumentarium. ... show more

  • nice but no sheet music and cheap mallets
Color: Muti
The media could not be loaded. I liked the padded carrying case, and the quality of the instrument itself is great, but rubber ended mallets with longer handles would have made this five-star. A sheet or two of instructions and/or music would have been nice, as this is promoted as appropriate for kids. ... show more
