My wife is the queen of neat freaks, and we have multiple Dyson vacuums in our house, but had been using either a Swiffer or plug-in steam mop to clean our laminate floors after vacuuming. Being fans of Dyson products, we were happy to have the chance to review their new PencilWash. First impressions: this is very lightweight. Assembly takes seconds. The stand is very handy for the small stick and battery unit, as hanging it from a wall like other Dyson products would probably result in in falling off frequently. The reservoir initially concerned me, as we have about 1,300 sq ft of laminate on the ground floor, I thought I'd need to keep refilling it. Putting it to use: *this is not recommended by Dyson* I add a small amount of Simple Green concentrate to the reservoir and fill the rest with filtered water to minimize streaks and spots on the floor. The reservoir size, which I was initially concerned about, turned out to hold enough liquid to do our entire first floor without a refill. My wife had just used a Swiffer the day before we got this, and there were a few things (e.g., where the kids dropped toothpaste on the floor) that had not come off. The PencilWash cleaned these up in a single pass, which was really impressive for a machine that didn't appear to be viciously scrubbing the floor. After use, the floors dry extremely quickly, as only a very thin layer of water remains after passing over a spot and back. Even though, as I mentioned, the floors had just been cleaned with a Swiffer and bad been vacuumed by a V15 5 minutes before I used this, we still poured out nasty brown water after cleaning floors that appeared very clean to the naked eye. One final thing that I really like is the button operation instead of a trigger. I dislike having to hold a trigger down on all of my Dyson products, and this model removes that annoyance--just push the button to turn it on, and push it again to turn it off. Since that initial use, we've had a few rainy days, which means muddy dog footprints, and the PencilWash has been really effective in cleaning them all up at the end of the day. There's only one thing I dislike about this machine, and that's the preparation and tear-down process, which can take some time. It only takes a minute to fill the reservoir and connect the head, but cleaning and drying between uses takes time that wasn't needed with our Swiffer or Shark steam mop. After use, you dump the gross water into the sink or toilet, then wash everything out to make sure it's clean. Next, we leave it in its disassembled state in our garage to dry, as we don't want it to get stinky or moldy between uses. This is an unavoidable problem with anything like this device or a carpet shampooer that sucks used water or solution back into itself, but it's something that slows you down when cleaning, and is something to consider when weighing your options.

I got this specifically to use in our fifth wheel travel trailer with vinyl flooring. Prior to the Dyson PencilWash we were using a Swiffer WetJet, so I’ll be using that as a comparison. Pros: This is a Dyson. You get that signature Dyson quality feel and features. The unit is easy to assemble and charge. The clean water tank is easy to fill and all of the components seem to be high-quality and well-made. The PencilWash is easy to maneuver, and It feels very good in your hand. The battery life is good and should provide enough cleaning time for the average size home. Cons: While the overall quality of the hardware seems nice there are some things that are lacking. The tank is difficult to seal properly and therefore causes malfunctions somewhat frequently. As others have stated you need to make sure that you vacuum the floor very thoroughly prior to mopping or it becomes a problem. The dirty water side of the container doesn’t seal as well as it should in my opinion. While the charging base works fine, I would prefer to be able to charge the unit while totally assembled. It would make it much easier and more convenient for my wife. The included instructions seemed to be an afterthought and aren’t at all comprehensive. While pictograms are fine for most things sometimes a detailed worded explanation is more useful. In my opinion, there’s not a lot of value with the PencilWash. It seems to be extremely expensive for what you get. It appears you’re paying a premium for the Dyson name. Overall opinion. To be fair, this is a Dyson and it is made nicely. I think that there needs to be refinement of the overall product. For me this is not something I would purchase at this time. I would recommend waiting for an updated version.

I wanted to love this because I have a cordless Dyson vacuum and LOVE it. However, it wasn't clear in the description that I would need to clean the roller head by hand. Yuck. There are quirky things about this--always putting it in thebteay the wrong way, the tank is small, and didn't realize it doeant vaccum up anything bc there's zero suction. I watched Youtube comparison videos and diacovered the Tineco and it is amazing. Costs less, too.

After arrival it started to charge but never finished. After that it was completely dead. I put a voltmeter on the base to verify the adapter was supplying juice to the unit. Dyson's website is dysfunctional (I do IT for a living...). After registering it wouldn't let me log back in (yes, I had the correct password). I tried to reset the password but that was dysfunctional also. I tried the chat agent and it was useless AI slop. I called the support phone # and the menu had no options for the PencilWash model and also seemed to be AI slop. Life's too short, my first and last Dyson product. Amazon has a great return policy so it's going back.

I brought the PencilWash home expecting a glorified Swiffer and instead met a hyper-caffeinated floor wand that practically drags me around the house while erasing muddy dog prints and kid-toothpaste blobs in a single pass. The roller constantly rinses itself, spits the dirty water into its own little swamp tank, and somehow leaves my floors dry in minutes instead of that sticky “I just mopped” limbo. On a full charge I can cruise through 1000–1600 square feet of hard flooring without the battery quitting on me, and the tiny water tank bizarrely makes it to the finish line as long as I’m not on MAX the whole time. It’s slim, light, and reaches under furniture like it’s auditioning for a yoga class, so I actually hit the spots I usually pretend not to see. Using it feels like handing the job to a small, overachieving robot that thinks it’s a race car. The self‑propelled roller glides forward with such enthusiasm that if I loosen my grip, it wanders like a Roomba that’s found religion. The handle looks designer-chic but turns into a slippery baton halfway through a 20‑minute session, and my wrist occasionally files a formal complaint. When it’s behaving, though, it’s far less work than a traditional mop and bucket, and I love that I can just tap a button instead of death-gripping a trigger like on other Dyson gear. Reality check: this thing is absolutely not a vacuum, and it’s very offended if I treat it like one. If I don’t vacuum thoroughly first, the roller just smears crumbs and stray pet fluff into a sad wet confetti line and then asks me why I live like this. Stuck-on stains and Sunday-breakfast disasters demand either MAX mode and patience or an old-fashioned scrub with actual pressure, because this wand politely skims rather than leans in and bears down. When I really test it on stubborn spots, I sometimes end up reaching for a Swiffer or steam mop to finish the job, which is not what my wallet was hoping to hear at this price. The cleaning after the cleaning is where the romance cools. Every session ends with me emptying a disturbingly brown tank, rinsing parts like a tiny car wash, and then leaving everything disassembled to dry so I don’t breed a new life form in the roller. There’s no “self-clean” circus trick like some competitors; I’m the self-clean feature, and if I skip my chores, I pay with funk. The water tanks can be fiddly to seal, and if I don’t get them just right, the machine sulks with malfunctions that feel a bit rich coming from something this expensive. And then there’s the price, which firmly sits in “Dyson tax” territory. I love the build quality, the compact footprint, the way it genuinely lifts dirty water off the floor instead of just moving it around, and how fast everything dries, but I have to ignore the part of my brain doing side‑by‑side math with cheaper wet-dry floor cleaners that include hot self-cleaning features and more suction. When it works as intended, it feels like a sleek, futuristic upgrade that makes mopping less miserable and a lot more satisfying; when it misbehaves, it feels like I bought a very fancy stick that refuses to vacuum and needs its spa routine every time it’s used. If I think of it as my everyday “quick wash and shine” tool and not the one machine to rule all floor filth, I like it a whole lot more.

Ok, I have about 1200 square feet of hard floor space, but I'll need to factor in furniture and other items that occupy the floor spaces. One battery charge did last, and had some remaining usage time. I filled the solution/ water tank and that actually lasted the entire 20 minute cleaning session with a mix of tile (1/4" grout lines), smooth oak hardwood flooring, and some engineered wood flooring surfaces. Setting 1 for solution dispensing worked fine, as my floors are pretty smooth and get vacuumed/ cleaned often, but still gets a good saturation in-use with the Pencil wash and needed about 10 minutes for everything to fully dry in 72 degree indoor temperature with a window and door open. Assembly was super easy and straightforward, but this takes up a little more space than anticipated. It has a separate protective base the motorized part attaches to when storing and this prevents the cleaning roller from getting damaged or malformed. The stick/ wand/ handle portion goes into the base charger that occupies additional floor space. I feel there should be an option part to stack this setup together into one unit on a door or wall hidden in a closet for storage, since this is not a daily use cleaning tool. The constant cleaning of the head and flsuing/ rinsing of the dirty water tank needs to be done religiously, as mold or muck can form if not allowed to dry properly before storage, so a discliplined routine is necessary. Ergonomics of the handle after 20 minutes was not friendly for my wrist, as I'm fighting the self propelled motion that wanders any which way, if you're not clampled down firmly to keep it from wandering, but forward propelled motion was no harder than a full sized vacuum. The unit is lightweight, but I also feel there should be a slight angle or some kind of ergonomic grip surface to hold while that is the only attachment point from the user. The handle is very slippery and has very little means of friction to optimize grip and control. The design is purely Dyson and that was paramount, but ergos really aren't great after prolonged use (15+ minutes). The weight is not an issue and I did not feel it. The horizontal rotating mop is very effective and there are squeegees that constantly clean and purge the dirty water into the dirty tank, which mine collected a surprising amount, so it is VERY EFFECTIVE and good at what it does. Value... well, this is a Dyson product with lots of engineering and design around this product. It's the Apple of vacuum and cleaning tools, and a premium price tag is attached to it, but the products are usually unmatched from the various Dyson vacuums and air purifiers/ heaters/ coolers, that I already own. Your own wallet and experience with this brand will help you decide, and this does what it does very well. Final note: THIS IS NOT A VACUUM and there are quirks with it. There is no self-cleaning feature like some other brands out there, but this is also one of the more compact units on the market. I don't love it nor hate it, but it does what it is designed to effectively.

So very excited to purchase this along with the Penvilvac. Made sure to vacuum all our floors a couple times over then start using the Pencilwash. First thoughts were it was relatively easy to use. Not as easy as popping a swiffer on, but close enough. But then it came to cleaning. While I’m sure on the surface it was picking up dirt there is no way this was going to get any stains or other stubborn spots. The thing with a mop or swiffer is you can apply pressure to spots you need to, not so with the Pencilwash. With I get, this is just washing the top layer of your floor, but when I go over the same spot over and over with the Pencilwash nothing happens. So out comes our handy swiffer, and even though we already went over the same ground twice with the Pencilwash our swiffer still found dirt, and got all the spots the Pencilwash missed. And not to say our floors are dirty, we regularly wash them, but the Pencilwash did not hold up to our post Sunday breakfast kitchen. Unfortunately back it will go.

I have been using this on both hardwood and tile, and it works really well. It makes cleaning much easier than a traditional mop, since it actually washes and picks up everything at the same time. The setup was very straightforward since everything basically just clicks together, and there are no tools needed. Charging is simple too, since you just place the handle into the charger, and the rest of the unit sits in the tray, since it will be damp after use. Charging does take a little while, but I can easily clean all of my floors with a full charge. The roller is self-cleaning as you use it, which is one of my favorite features because it keeps it from getting overly dirty while cleaning. It also uses clean water while collecting the dirty water separately, so you are not just pushing dirty water around like with a regular mop. On the lower setting, it pushes out just the right amount of water, so it does not leave puddles behind, and the floors dry pretty quickly. On the max mode, it does leave more water behind, but it’s still not bad. Cleaning performance is excellent. Most of the time, one forward and backward pass is enough to pick up messes and stains without leaving any residue. Out of habit, I pretty much always vacuum first, but it actually does a pretty good job picking up small debris like crumbs and dirt along with stains and wet messes, so you probably don’t always need to vacuum first. The brush is also very easy to maintain, since you can remove it and rinse it with soap and water, and it dries fairly quickly. It helps that the brush constantly rinses itself during use, so it never gets as dirty as a traditional mop head. Another thing that makes it stand out from other wet cleaners is its size and maneuverability. It is very slim and lightweight, making it easy to move around and fit into tight spaces. It also kind of pulls itself forward as you use it, so you are not really pushing it like a traditional mop, which makes cleaning feel much easier. It glides smoothly without feeling like you have to push hard, which makes a big difference when you are cleaning for a while. Overall, it feels like a well-thought-out design, and the build quality is what you would expect from Dyson.
