  • Nimble, lightweight, and surprisingly effective.
My wife is the queen of neat freaks, and we have multiple Dyson vacuums in our house, but had been using either a Swiffer or plug-in steam mop to clean our laminate floors after vacuuming. Being fans of Dyson products, we were happy to have the chance to review their new PencilWash. First impressions: this is very lightweight. Assembly takes seconds. The stand is very handy for the small stick and battery unit, as hanging it from a wall like other Dyson products would probably result in in falling off frequently. The reservoir initially concerned me, as we have about 1,300 sq ft of laminate on the ground floor, I thought I'd need to keep refilling it. Putting it to use: *this is not recommended by Dyson* I add a small amount of Simple Green concentrate to the reservoir and fill the rest with filtered water to minimize streaks and spots on the floor. The reservoir size, which I was initially concerned about, turned out to hold enough liquid to do our entire first floor without a refill. My wife had just used a Swiffer the day before we got this, and there were a few things (e.g., where the kids dropped toothpaste on the floor) that had not come off. The PencilWash cleaned these up in a single pass, which was really impressive for a machine that didn't appear to be viciously scrubbing the floor. After use, the floors dry extremely quickly, as only a very thin layer of water remains after passing over a spot and back. Even though, as I mentioned, the floors had just been cleaned with a Swiffer and bad been vacuumed by a V15 5 minutes before I used this, we still poured out nasty brown water after cleaning floors that appeared very clean to the naked eye. One final thing that I really like is the button operation instead of a trigger. I dislike having to hold a trigger down on all of my Dyson products, and this model removes that annoyance--just push the button to turn it on, and push it again to turn it off. Since that initial use, we've had a few rainy days, which means muddy dog footprints, and the PencilWash has been really effective in cleaning them all up at the end of the day. There's only one thing I dislike about this machine, and that's the preparation and tear-down process, which can take some time. It only takes a minute to fill the reservoir and connect the head, but cleaning and drying between uses takes time that wasn't needed with our Swiffer or Shark steam mop. After use, you dump the gross water into the sink or toilet, then wash everything out to make sure it's clean. Next, we leave it in its disassembled state in our garage to dry, as we don't want it to get stinky or moldy between uses. This is an unavoidable problem with anything like this device or a carpet shampooer that sucks used water or solution back into itself, but it's something that slows you down when cleaning, and is something to consider when weighing your options. ... show more

  • Great handling, annoying quirks
Product title at the time of review: Dyson PencilWashᵀᴹ Cordless Wet Hard Floor Cleaner What I liked: * Incredibly easy setup. Just click three pieces together, fill the clean water tank, and it's ready to go. No complicated assembly or priming required. * Effortless operation. The cleaner is nearly self-propelled; you simply guide it. Maneuverability is pure Dyson: light, precise, and intuitive. After a few minutes of use, it feels like an extension of your arm (or mind): you think where to go next, and it responds almost subconsciously. * Excellent cleaning performance: It delivers very good results on hard floors, effectively removing dirt, spills, and light stains. * Solid battery life: A full charge lasts long enough to cover an entire average household without interruption. * Gentle on floors. The soft roller is kind to surfaces like sealed wood, laminate, vinyl, and tile. What I didn't like: * Dirty water spills easily: Tilting the cleaning head even slightly causes dirty water to leak because only the clean water tank is properly sealed. * Unstable when docked: You can't leave the handle attached to the head in the base/cover; it tends to topple over with a loud bang. * Pre-soaped roller. The roller arrived with dried soap residue embedded in it. Even when using just clean (filtered) water, soapy suds appeared during the first few uses. Some users might appreciate the built-in cleaning boost, but I prefer full control over what goes on my floors, if I want soap, I'll add my own. * Limited water flow control: Only two hydration levels are available, which feels too coarse. I'd prefer more granularity for different messes and floor types. * Level 2 leaves floors excessively wet. The higher setting applies so much water that floors stay soaked for too long, making the second level practically unusable for me. In practice, only Level 1 works reliably. * Pictogram-only manual. The instructions rely entirely on small, wordless illustrations, no text at all. While the product is intuitive enough that you barely need guidance, the tiny pictures are hard to decipher and far from universally clear. This feels like an unnecessary (and condescending) design choice, languages exist for a reason. Overall verdict: At $349.99, the Dyson PencilWash™ offers impressive maneuverability, hygienic cleaning, and genuine ease of use, making it a strong contender in the slim wet floor cleaner category. However, the minor but noticeable drawbacks, especially the spill-prone dirty tank, unstable docking, limited water settings, and overly wet higher mode, prevent it from feeling like a flawless premium product. I'm deducting one star for these issues and the price premium. Great concept and execution in many ways, but room for refinement in the details. Worth considering if you value Dyson's signature handling and have mostly light-to-moderate hard-floor cleaning needs. ... show more
