    • Possibly the best travel kit on the market
I spent the previous 4-5 years trying to put together the best possible portable drum set for smaller gigs. For larger gigs I have a DW Collector’s kit that has been amazing. I wanted something that I could setup fast and was easy to transport in two trips without a cart, or in one trip with one. The Frequent Flyer is where I ended up after a number of different attempts. This kit sets up fast and I can carry all the stuff I need for a gig in a couple trips. The bass drum is punchy with enough bottom end to let you feel it’s a bass drum, especially when it’s mic’ed up. The floor tom tunes up to a lower pitch than you’d expect despite its lack of depth. The 12” tom is pretty much a standard size. The drums have a great tuning range and can be used in a lot of different situations. My kit is a bit different from the standard kit because it has mount on the right side for a cymbal, and I separately purchased a 10” tom which I use with the kit most of the time unless I’m doing a 5 piece set. I go into the gig with a pretty light hardware bag with the Yamaha Crosstown hardware and the mounts for the drum set. I can set it up in about 15 minutes which is where a few of my other attempts at a travel kit broke down. I bought mine used off of Reverb, so it wasn’t as expensive as they are on retail sites. It also didn’t come with the snare, but I have a bit of a snare problem, so I had more than a couple that I prefer with this kit over the stock design series snare drum. The snare doesn't sound bad but I have a number of snares that sound better. These drums are a bit pricey, and I wouldn't recommend this drum set as a kit for beginning players. If you're a pro and want a drum set that punches well above it's weight this might be the option you've been looking for. There are a couple other drum sets like this on the market, but they tend to undersize the toms a bit more than I'm comfortable with. Some also include a "Snom" for the floor tom. While I think it's a cool sound, in practice I've had a hard time getting the sound I want due to not being able to tune the bottom head as low as I like due to the snare beds and thin bottom head. There are also a number of kits with 16" and 18" bass drums. These kits have a very usable bass drum sound but require you install a riser as a part of the setup process which can make it take a bit longer to set up. With a 20" bass drum, there is no need for a drum riser. If you're looking for a "real" drum set sound in a compact form factor this kit checks all the boxes. I highly recommend it. ... show more
