Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

I will five Star this review when I find out these are real leather. So I bought a couple of pairs of Doc martens from Amazon. One pair was too wide and it was missing the Doc inserts, one pair was very scuffed up and one wasn't the correct size. The problem with these is they came in very wrinkly I don't know if this is leather. feels like the cheap material that waterproof windbreaker jackets are made of. They feel like some sort of cheap plastic material, they are extremely shiny. I tried to wipe them down and apply a little leather conditioner to see if it would sink in but the material wouldn't take it, repelled it even. I don't know what to think and it's a shame because they're super comfortable and fit perfectly. I'm going to have to go to DSW or journeys and see if their pair feels the same. I've owned Docs for 30 years but I've never had this "Softy T" leather. So there's a chance that maybe it's a user error and I'm a dummy. Fingers crossed because these are some of the most comfortable boots I've ever had and I haven't even broken them in yet. Doc martens are very hit or miss these days they're either made in China Bangladesh and a few other countries. My experience has been the docs made in England are of course the better made but also cost twice as much. The Bangladesh ones seem to be better made than the Chinese versions but don't be fooled by the made in China tag because everything's made in China. People dropping hundreds of dollars on Chinese-made tennis shoes and hiking boots without reservation but will say don't buy Docs made in China? I have boots that were made in China that held up much longer than boots I've had made in the USA. Don't judge your Docs by what people say, the country of origin means nothing. I find that most people that give one-star reviews received counterfeit Docs. Do your homework and make sure they are authentic and then examine them. The spelling on the name should be correct, the cross should be on the bottom of the sole, they should not have memory foam inserts inside but they should have a heel pad. A good pair of Docs treated right will last a long time and it's well worth the price of admission. Just remember the Golden rules, order one size smaller. You want your docs to be a tad snug but not painfully snug, they should feel comfortable from the beginning. When you break them in followed my advice strictly, only wear one pair of socks. Use the same socks you're going to wear regularly not a thick pair. Wear your Docs around your house day or two. This is to break your heel box in you want it to conform to the roundness of your heel, once it does this will prevent heel slippage. Once you feel your heel locks into place then you can start wearing your boots and breaking in the rest of the leather. This is why you don't want to wear two pairs of socks because then your heel box too big it won't conform to your heel. You will end up with heel slippage and blisters all over your feet. The easiest way to do it was to wash your Docs as soon as you get them to get the mink oil off. You saddle soap by brush and rinse the saddle soap off. Apply a generous coat of leather conditioner then a coat of dubbin wax. Wear your Docs all day and walk in them as little as possible, if you are hardcore sleep in them. You don't need to stretch them out with frozen bags of water or any of the other crazy tales. Just let your feet with the regular pair of socks break them in but do this before you plan on walking in them. Make sure your Docs are never dry, take good care of them and they'll take good care of you. ... show more

Although the description says both that these are women’s boots and men’s boots, they are men’s. I got them for my brother-in-law and he just loves them. He says they are super comfortable.

I doubt these are Doc Martens based first on fit. Docs mold to one's feet but these are made to be a more one-size fits all in the respective sizes if that makes sense. Also, are these leather? Not sure. They also do not go up as far on the leg as the actual Docs of this same model and type that I have already. Also, these were made in China, so while they have the same soles and interior soles like Docs, I could tell they were a copy of Docs. As such, Docs purport "bouncy soles," so as you walk you do feel that cushion. This pair does not have that same cushioning so as you walk you feel your feet hitting the ground. Also, the shipping box says that it was shipped in said box because the original box was damaged. This is a tell. I got duped. Since I got duped I will say, for the price I do not believe these copies are worth it. They should be priced at $25.99. ... show more
