Description

The 8053 is a western-influenced take on the classic 5-eye shoe. the 8053 denatures a rough and ready, rugged leather with a pre loved look, antique- effect eyelets and round cotton laces Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

  • really well made shoes
I have weirdly wide feet with very high arches, if I was flat-footed I'd probably be at least a size or a size-and-a-half larger, so it's always awkward finding shoes that fit. My list over the years was generally Ecco and Keen, and both of those were too expensive and too shoddily made to justify continuing to get them. On a whim I bought a pair of these and have never looked back. I thought all the punk rock kids looked cool wearing these in the 80s and they seemed to endure that lifestyle, so I figured what could go wrong with a much more sedate existence? I'm on my second pair right now and when they wear out, I'll get my third. They fit perfectly, have room to spare on the sides but don't feel like clown shoes, and my feet basically never get sore even after walking 20,000 steps or more. The soles seem to last about 2-3 years depending on how much you abuse them, but once you wear through and start to develop cracks or holes it sucks up all the moisture out of the ground and soaks your feet. I'm sure for a price you can get them resoled but it just seems like too much of a hassle for me. This most recent pair seems to squeak a lot even after being more or less broken in, so I don't know what that's about since I haven't had them do that in the past. I'm hoping that eventually it'll stop, but in the mean time they announce my presence better than a box of tic tacs in the pocket, so people know to run away or act busy when I'm approaching. ... show more

  • You can't go wrong with Docs!
I love Docs - every color and style imaginable. They are the highest quality shoe/boot made in my opinion. They never wear out (I have a pair I've been wearing since 1999) and are amazingly comfortable. Definitely worth the price. Love them!

  • Cool, great shoes!
I spend the day on my feet and love my Dr. Martens! They are a little heavy but considering the wonderful sole that keeps my feet warm, even in light snow and slush, they are perfect! I have narrow feet so do wear thick socks and ideally wear a 9 1/2 but the Women's 9 fits great. And very cute with jeans. Would buy again! ... show more

  • great quality
The quality justifies the price. I was not kind to these shoes and they lasted me over 6 years.

  • Pretty roomy, but great shoes
When I ordered these, I forgot that Docs run a bit big. I'm typically an 8.5 or 9 and always a 9 if I'm wearing heavy socks. Even laced up tightly, these shoes feel a bit loose on me. This isn't a big deal - I'll just buy some gel inserts and the problem is solved! Otherwise, these are great, well-made shoes. My last Docs have lasted me 10+ years and I fully expect these to as well. If you're buying your first pair, remember that they are pretty heavy shoes and you'll probably trip a few times the first couple of times you wear them. Once you get used to them on your feet, they're super comfy and look very nice. ... show more

  • Exact same sizing as 10 years ago, reliable for repeat customers!
My boyfriend has worn these exact same shoes for 10 years. They were still functional but had no tread left. I bought the exact same size for his Christmas gift and they fit perfectly. He said he didn't even have to break these in!

  • Absolutely love them!
These are the perfect shoes. I wear them everyday. They're comfortable (even as a a flat footed person) and you can dress them up or down!

  • Not Your Father’s Doc Martens
I am school teacher and I’m on my feet all day. I’ve worn Doc Martens since the late 1980’s. The Dr. Martens today are not worth the money due to declining quality. These shoes are made in China, Laos, and Thailand; no longer England. The last two pair I’ve purchased lasted 20 months and 16 months. The sole splits and glue doesn’t work well for a repair due to an alloy of pvc. Yes, you can take them to a cobbler, but that becomes an expensive repair. Also, Dr. Martens no longer offers a lifetime warranty; only one year. You can call the company and hope to get a customer care agent that cares, but good luck with that endeavor. Caveat Emptor! ... show more
