  • How's YOUR diet?
If YOU like to cook for yourself, BUY THIS BOOK. If YOU like to eat healthfully, BUY THIS BOOK. If YOU only eat food others have prepared, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If YOU do not normally eat a well-balanced whole-food diet, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. ----- After 4 years of coaxing my girl dog (Basset mix) to eat the highest quality grain-free kibble by topping it with premium canned food (or cheese, or egg, or broth, etc) and then having very little luck getting her little brother (Beagle mix) to eat kibble, I have started feeding them Dr. Becker's "REAL FOOD" diet. At the very first meal, the little guy cleaned his bowl without stopping which is NOT normal for him. Normally he will eat a little food, then go find a remnant of an all-meat chew treat to eat instead of finishing his meal. Sometimes he gets around to eating the rest of the food, but more often I end up tossing it. My girl was also delighted with the new food. If I had a lot more money and a lot less time (or simply hated cooking), I would probably just feed my dogs store-bought raw diet patties. But I am frugal and I like to cook. For these reasons, the recipes did not phase me. I think the work involved is very manageable. If the vitamin mix prep is scary to you, it shouldn't be. Every vitamin is easily found online, or in my case I found everything at W-F-, including oils and bone meal. (Just pay attention to the exact form of vitamin, and the exact dose per pill. And watch out for cheap oils that have other oils as fillers.) The initial cost of the supplements was a bit scary, but I was relieved when I calculated exactly how long they would last. A few things that do come in very handy: A kitchen scale, a calculator, exact portion-size food containers, a large pot (if you cook the meat), human nutritional calculators online (so you can find out exact fat/protein/calorie stats for different cuts of meat), and advice from your vet about how many calories per day your dog should eat. Also, I did not use a food grinder-instead I weighed out the individual portions of organ meat and regular meat when assembling the meals. I believe this book is easiest to use if you have a mid-sized dogs (like mine). Portioning food/supplements for a tiny dog would be difficult, and storage/cost would be the big issues for giant breeds. If you are willing and able to do the work and cover the cost to feed your dog the best, this book is for you! ... show more

  • Excellent and Simple
Format: Paperback
I purchased this book after watching several of Dr. Becker’s YouTube videos. I do firmly believe dry kibble is not the most healthy food option for my dogs. Unfortunately, up until recently, I’ve been terribly intimidated to make raw recipes for my five dogs. Money is another legitimate factor for me, as well. I’ve looked at all of the professed high quality prepared raw foods on the market (Farmer’s Dog, We Feed Raw, etc) and human grade prepared dog foods (Honest Kitchen, Canisource, etc) and the cost would be outrageous for me. Good for my dogs, but financially devastating for me. Yes, I do believe a healthy diet equals a healthy dog, fewer vet visits, and so on. Being unable to afford the convenience of prepared quality food, I ordered this book with the intention of gaining solid canine nutritional education and the ability to prepare and feed my dogs raw recipes. This book absolutely nailed it for me regarding all areas of concern. It simplified recipes and the availability of ingredients. It eliminates all guess work, advised on where to purchase required products for optimizing recipes (nutritional support products), and equipment needed to make the recipes (blender, grinder, etc). I’m a Registered Nurse, yet, I’m not an Animal Nutritionist or a Veterinarian. This book is easy to understand, very thorough, and extremely educational. Yes, I do highly recommend it for anyone looking to SAFELY make their own dog food recipes and never have to worry about any guess work in doing it. ... show more

  • Rewarding to see The Changes in my Precious pet
Format: Paperback
Great book. I like that it was written by Vet.s with lots of nutritional knowledge for dogs and cats. There is a lot to switching your pet to a home made diet. If you are already eating a simple unprocessed diet of mostly meats and vegetables the transition is not so bad. I took about a month to read the book and took notes. This is where I give the book a 4 instead of a 5. It seemed a little confusing at times and I had to really read and reread the whole book before I felt like I was ready to proceed. So first I tried raw meat and raw eggs with my small dog (8 pounds) and she loved them. She would NOT eat sardines, however so I use salmon instead which is fine as we have salmon 2 times per week anyway. Then I ordered all of the supplements. For a small dog this program is very affordable. Not so sure about the big dog grocery bill? Slowly I began to put all of the pieces together and modified the book's rotation plan so that it fit with our family meal rotation plan so that I am pulling meat out of the freezer for her at the same time as for the family. Kona, my little poodle mix, has been on the program for 3 weeks now. She has lost much of her chub and is lean and strong looking. She can easily jump onto furniture now that she was previously not able to jump up on even though she would give it a good scrambling try. My groomer noticed the difference in her right away and said that her coat and general condition (overweight) was much improved and asked me what I was doing differently. I know that this is maybe over the top for many busy people but I am so grateful for this book because I know that I am doing the very best I can to give her every chance to live a long and healthy life. Two statements that stuck out for me is 1) The very cheapest meat from the very cheapest grocery store is still vastly better than dry or canned dog food. UGH! My family has long ago stopped eating Factory Farmed Animal products and buy local and or organic meats whenever so WOW! Think of what that means is used in dog food. Pink slime is probably a step up from what they put in dog food. This helped to keep me motivated while making the switch. 2) If you can't commit to doing the whole program than it is better to feed store bought dog food...really because at least it is well balanced. So it is really important to make sure that if you are going to make home made dog food that you find a well designed program. That is what the book gives you and is what I call the Science Diet because it is so well researched and is based on scientific research. Remember that dog food companies are in business to make a profit so really, do you believe they use high quality ingredients? Do you think they really care about the long term health of your animal? Did animals suffer from cancer on their ancestral diets? If you can afford to buy some extra meat, vegetables and supplements and have just a few extra hours per month consider purchasing this book and making the switch. I am confident that whatever extra money I spend will be saved in vet bills down the road. It is work and it is confusing at first but the rewards are so great. I feel so proud of myself for doing this. Just knowing that I am providing the very best for her is so very fulfilling. I highly recommend this book and for everyone to at least consider making the transition to a simple, healthy, well balanced home made diet for your pet. ... show more
