Bought this for my girlfriend's 98 Ford Windstar. The original was failing, in that you couldn't just turn the key all the way to engage the starter - - you had to turn it pall the way, then back it off just a hair until it hit a "sweet spot" that was narrower than the head of a pin. Then it would start. (For some strange reason, she found this difficult. I had no trouble, more or less mastering the technique after practicing it 2 or 3 dozen times, but I am admittedly a mechanical genius. Humble, too!) Anyway, I bought this part to fix the fix the problem so she could actually start her own car. The part was a fraction of the cost of purchasing it from a Ford dealer, and installation was a breeze. I just kept removing bolts under the steering wheel until I could see the ignition switch after a few hours. (Like I said, a mechanical genius!) Then a few more hours of replacing bolts, and Bob's your Uncle - - the repair was done! And the best part is this new part actually works. She can start her own car now, which makes us both happy, and I finally got recognized for being the automotive jedai master I truly am.

Perfect fitment

After installation I started the key but unable to turn the engine. I had to wiggle the key back and forth several times before the starter caught on. After a short 4 miles drive I turned off engine and started again. This time it started without having to wiggle. I guess the heat likely facilitated the contacts of the poles inside the switch to work more reliably. This same pattern repeated for the next three days before the switch completely gave up and I had to start the engine by the way of the two solenoid terminals. I returned this unit and ordered a second one. I noticed the second unit was smoother than the first one when I manually moved the rod back and forth. I sprayed some WD40 into the moving parts of the switch before installing it. The second switch worked perfectly as it should. It started the engine on every single turn. There was no need to wiggle it to find the sweet spot where the electrical contact would fully mate for adequate current flow. I now raise the rating to five stars.
