  • GET THIS OVER SQUIER
Color: DK-Black Style: DMT-100
I didn't WANT to buy this guitar, but I couldn't resist. $159 during the Black Friday sale...as compared to $258 during Donner's OWN Black Friday sale. I had actually been eyeing this up for a while. I wanted a "metal" guitar, just for the aggression factor. When Fenderplay was having a deal where you get a free guitar if you sign up for lessons, I jumped on it. for $150, I got a Squier strat, amp, etc....basic stuff for a beginner, thought I'm not a beginner. I had already planned on modding the strat, so I got a HH pickguard and put some Fishman Fluence Moderns in it. It's a good guitar, but certainly not a "pro level" guitar. SO...fast forward to Black Friday, and I see this nifty little Donner that I had been looking at...I figured, what the heck, at least I can mod it. I already have a set of Seymour Duncan Invaders that I planned on putting in it. BUT....I'm not sure I will, now. Shipping was good, it arrived a day earlier than expected. Nothing was wrong with the box, and visual inspection didn't show any problems. Flat black all around, with a dark fretboard. The headstock is REALLY small, like smaller than Musicman small. I was planning on putting Hipshot tuners on it, but just looking at it, I know that the mounting plate won't fit. Nice straight string pull through the nut to the pegs. Everything on the guitar is blacked out, which I like. It comes with a few cool little extras, like the string dampener. The gig bag is usable, but there are certainly better ones out there. So....I start test driving it. There are no sharp fret ends. In fact, the fingerboard seems to be somewhat rolled. It's very comfortable. After tuning it up, I tested for dead frets. Played up the entire neck and couldn't find ANY dead spots. Decided to attempt some alternate tunings. Drop D worked well. D Standard was good, and even in Drop C, there was no fret buzz. Took off the back panel to investigate and there's a pretty cool quick connect system. A PCB board mounted to the 2 pots, with 4 quick connects for the switch, jack, and both pickups. At high gain, there's a noticeable buzzing, which is expected. I just need to turn the noise gate up higher for these pickups than I do the Fishmans. The pickups are slightly microphonic as well. I could hear the screws on the backplate being unscrewed when I left it plugged in, so any bumping will be noticeable at high gain, again, depending on the noise gate. The buzzing is there, but not prevalent on a clean setup. I wanted to be as detailed as possible to provide the best review I could. Overall, I'd say that of the 2 guitars, I would regret the Squier purchase more. I bought both guitars strictly to mod and make them what I want to make them. The Squier required more work than I anticipate with the Donner. The main thing that will need attention is the tuners, they have some play in them, so you have to tune down, then back up to pitch to tighten up the mechanical slack in them...you can definitely feel it when tuning. If you want to get a guitar for a beginner, I would highly suggest this one. I didn't really need to set up anything on it at all to get it working. As I said, neck feels good, frets are fine, didn't check intonation completely, but up and down the fretboard it seems on point. I love the hipshot style bridge, as I've installed the real thing on many guitars. The most important part of a guitar for a beginner is always going to be the neck. If it's uncomfortable to play, then the won't. This one does not disappoint at all. ... show more

  • Not too shabby
Color: DK-Black Style: DMT-100
I had to crown some frets down before I was able to play it and adjust the truss rod because of the overwhelming concave.Having said that, it's an amazing guitar! Strong pickups and fairly low action. For the price, I have no complaints. This thing sounds like a $2000 guitar. If you have patience, it's a great deal. If you're just starting out, Maybe not for you unless you're willing to pay someone to set it up. ... show more

  • Bang For Not A Whole Lotta Buck!! Bang For Not A Whole Lotta Buck!!
Color: Gradient Black Style: DMT-100
I didn't quite know what I was looking for when I stumbled upon the Donner DMT-100. But something about the design of the guitar spoke to me, as did the Gradient Black finish...I have wanted a silverburst guitar for many years, and this particular Cyber Monday was gonna be the day I crossed off a bucket list item. Fast-forward a few days, and it's here, impeccably packaged and...also near-flawlessly set up in regards to string height and intonation, right out of the box?! To be honest, I was expecting to have to do serious work here, especially considering that my tuning of choice most of the time is...drop-A. Yes, I do own guitars of longer scale length and more strings, but sometimes, the feel of drop-A on a 25.5" scale ain't too bad either. After restringing this bad boy with some slightly beefier strings (the stock strings, while better than expected, were still most decidedly stock strings), I cranked those tuning keys to drop-A and got my thunder on...and lightnng...and gale-force winds...holy wow, those pickups are high-output!!!! But also very clear and articulate from string to string...huge points to Donner for not cutting corners for stock pickups, even though many people replace these in their axes later on. Build quality on this baby is PHENOMENAL for a guitar in this price range. This guitar feels so incredibly solid, like a baseball bat, but sleek, if that makes a lick of sense. The finish glows and sparkles in person, and the Hipnaught (fake Hipshot bridge) feels comfortable under the hand when strumming or palm-muting chords. The neck has a very slight V-shape to it, kind of like the old 50's Fenders, but slimmer...at least to my hand, it is incredibly comfortable to chord on, but if you are a devotee of Ibanez's Wizard necks, it may take a moment to get used to. All in all, if this kind of guitar is your thing, and you have an empty spot in your guitar rack or on your wall that you are dying to see this guitar filling...what are you waiting for?? This thing is ace!!! ... show more

  • Great for beginners
Color: DK-Black Style: DMT-100
A great starter guitar if you're looking to get into playing music. Appearance: The guitar looks great, the solid black is a classic and pairs well with the neck. The material does get smudged from fingers pretty easily, but can easily be cleaned with a microfiber. Has a nice, solid feel to it as well, which was surprising given the price. Quality: For the price, it sounds great. I was genuinely surprised at how it sounded out the box after a bit of tuning. Stays in tune as well. The strings weren't my favorite so I did end up replacing them, but I think for someone starting out on guitar the stock strings would work just fine. Cons: The strap is fairly cheap, I'd definitely recommend spending a few bucks to get a more comfortable one, so the material doesn't irritate your shoulder. Mediocre strings. ... show more

  • Very impressed!
Color: DK-Black Style: DMT-100
For the price you can't go wrong , it has no sharp frets and the neck is nice and slim , comparable to my RG. The tuners were okay but I installed locking one's , but kept the original ones for a future mod project. The humbuckers are not the best , they're decent enough for now but eventually I plan to install some high output ones. For now they're fine , the guitar also has a cool look to it. Kinda looks a little like my Schecters but not exactly , either way it's comfortable to play and I like the satin finish. No sticky neck and easy to move up and down the board , good for any kind of player and a good platform for modding. Definitely no complaints for the money , the last thing I'll mention is the all blacked out look gives it a cool vibe... ... show more

  • Decent but ..
Color: Gradient Violet Style: DMT-100
Good parts: well packed; visually appealing; neck pickup sounds great clean or dirty; intonation was good out of the box; nice bridge; tuners seemed fine. Minor things: the jack was loose and the bridge pickup would need installation adjustment. Showstopper: the neck didn't look straight in the bolt on neck. Not a relief thing. That made me worry as fixing the pocket and or neck joint is beyond my skill. I returned the instrument. ... show more

  • Good
Color: Gradient Black Style: DMT-100
This is a metal machine! With a proper setup and restring w good strings? It's a great guitar however with that being said there needs to be some work done to it,like truss rod adjustment, same with the bridge and last but never least is the fretboard needs some love, who knows how long these guitars sit in a cold warehouse waiting to be bought, the fretboard was dry as a bone and some music nomad f1 oil is the fix,I had to do it twice so the wood isn't dry anymore and for the ease of playability spray some finger ease and coat the fretboard to get a nice shine and you're good to go,if you're on the fence with this guitar? Go for it and if you don't have the experience with setups spend a little and have it professionally done ... show more

  • Great guitar
Color: DK-Black Style: DMT-100
This guitar surpassed my expectations and I'm happy for it. Right out of the box you can almost start playing. Just a quick tuning and intonation and you are pretty much good to go. The frets need polishing but I consider that fairly minor and something beginners should probably learn how to do anyway. The action is pretty much right where I like it a medium low action. The neck is a little thicker then I expected but still comfortable. I was going to change to locking tuners but the stock ones actually feel pretty good so I will probably hold off on that. The pickups are okay, I'm planning on upgrading them to active pickups later anyway. I think this is a great guitar for beginners or people like me who want another guitar for other tunings and tone setups. It was exactly what I was looking for simple, playable, a great price for what it is. ... show more
