A Timeless Classic Gets the HD Treatment It Deserves! Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on Nintendo Switch is everything I hoped for and more. This is one of the best platformers of all time, now beautifully remastered in high definition—and it looks absolutely fantastic. The updated visuals breathe new life into every level, from the lush jungles to the blazing volcanoes. Everything feels more vibrant, sharper, and smoother than ever before. The gameplay holds up incredibly well. It’s that perfect blend of challenging platforming, clever level design, and tight controls. Whether you’re blasting out of barrel cannons, dodging giant boulders, or riding a rocket through a maze of danger, every moment is packed with excitement and creativity. It’s tough in all the right ways—never unfair, but always pushing you to get better. The HD version includes both single-player and two-player local co-op, which makes it a blast to play with friends or family. Since the latest patch, this game is now (finally) officially playable in 2-player co-op and it's fantastic. Even better looking on the Switch 2 now. They've added Dixie Kong plus an extra heart container (3 instead of 2) so now this challenging game is more accessible for the novice gamer. It's now one of the best single and co-op games Nintendo has ever made with a decent challenge that's not to overbearing. Plus a new Turbo mode time attack options makes this game a 10.

Sometimes, it is difficult to review a video game when you've missed it the 1st or 2nd time around or gave up on it because of its increased gameplay terms. That has been the case with some games. I did feel that way with The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword, because the controls were too jarring & I lost my sense of challenge in gameplay. But also was the case with Donkey Kong games. I have been fair-weathered on most of them because they either made the challenge too rough to bare, or because they did not excite me. Well, I finally got to finish & play one long overdue game with Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Switch & I felt a bit more deflated, but had a good amount of fun with it in the long run. So my thoughts are mixed, but in the end I have a lot to say about this game. Donkey Kong Country Returns was originally a Wii game in 2009 & had a 3DS port in 2013 which was fair, but it crossed over the finish line barely in 2025 for the Switch & the Switch port is a redesign of the original Wii title with some good schemes in design for several levels. You'll be able to platform through various & vast worlds of tundra from underground mines & seaside shores where you play as DK and his crew of friends from Diddy Kong & Dixie Kong which was added to the Switch revision. The platforming is arguably some of the strictest I have ever played in both bad & good ways as you try & retrieve a vast collection of bananas that were stolen by the Tiki Tribes. The challenge case be very rough at times, which is mainly its downfall for DK. Which in some ways it is sad, because of the brilliant design of the levels & the lovely music for each of the levels. The graphics & level design are wonderful with the firm hues & shadowing in some of the sunsets & worlds work very well for the game, but that is it. The fun & enjoyment loses shine quite a lot because of the clunky controls & movement for Donkey Kong. Simply because he is not as agile as others like Mario or Sonic in gaming. In fact, you'll lose lives quite a lot with DK & that can frustrate you & you may be forced to skip levels & let a special guide finish it for you. I found it rough for me to use that multiple times & took my time away from enjoying the game to where I wanted it to be. Which remains the big downfall. I expected better from this Switch port. I expected there could've been good add-ons like amiibo support & extra levels to make the gameplay a little more enjoyable. But that is not here & it makes my time with the game less than a must buy for everyone to enjoy. While I did like the way the game looked for Donkey Kong Country Returns for Switch, I had expected from a platformer that had great design & music to show for it. It is a decent buy for anyone that missed the original game on Wii or the 3DS remaster in 2013.Just that more thought was needed to make me feel more hooked into a well-designed game. It still is worth finishing at least one time with a smile on your face, but not worth going back to for more games on the period to where you'll feel a bit overwhelmed than joyous at the end. I did not have that with some Switch games at the time like Super Mario Brothers Wonder or Princess Peach: Showtime. I like it, but I expected better, but had a good time nevertheless. Is it a must buy, some ways yes, just for seeing the lovely levels & worlds. But worth replaying over & over again. Graphics: B+ Sound: B 1/2+ Control: C+ Fun & Enjoyment: C+ Overall: B-
