  • Reliable GPS Tracker with Some Quirks – Still the Best for Hiking Without Cellular Signal
Size: Path 2
This GPS tracker really works and is extremely reliable for tracking my dog, especially during off-leash hikes. I don’t use the e-collar or fence features — I use it strictly for tracking, and it performs very well. I hike a lot in the forests of West Virginia, where cellular signal is often unavailable, so typical GPS trackers that rely on cell networks aren’t useful for me. The Dogtra Pathfinder II uses its own GPS system, so there’s no monthly subscription, and it doesn’t need cell service to function. The system has three components: your smartphone running the Dogtra app, a GPS receiver collar worn by your dog (with an antenna), and a handheld GPS connector (also with an antenna) that connects your phone to the collar. Once everything is paired and you're outdoors with clear sky visibility, the setup works flawlessly. It reliably sends your dog’s GPS location to your phone, even deep in the woods. You can download offline maps in the Dogtra app, which helps when you’re in remote areas. But even without the map view, the directional pointer and distance indicator make it easy to tell where your dog is. Battery life is excellent. I use "Track Only" mode with all extra alerts and lights turned off. During a 3-hour hike, it only used about 5% of the battery — though my dog was near me most of the time (except when she ran off to chase a deer — I tracked her and got her back easily!). You can also enable sleep mode when your dog is within view to save even more battery. There are a few quirks, but they’re manageable once you learn the system: 1. The Dogtra app sometimes takes a few tries to open. It can freeze at the dog icon screen, especially if your phone has weak data or is struggling to load map tiles. 2. Pairing takes patience. The connector and collar don’t always sync on the first try. You may hear the pairing chime, but the collar still might show as “Offline” until it gets a solid GPS fix. I’ve found that pointing both antennas skyward and waiting a minute outdoors helps. 3. You need to pair every time you use it. This includes pairing your phone to the GPS connector (via Bluetooth), and the connector to the dog’s collar (via radio signal). It’s a bit of a ritual, but once paired, the system is solid. Despite the startup quirks, once connected this device is reliable, accurate, and subscription-free. If you hike or explore areas without cell service, this is hands down the best GPS tracker I’ve found. It gives me peace of mind knowing I can always find my dog. ... show more

  • Great product for farm use, but with I didn't have to keep my phone connected
Size: Path 2
We live on a 16 acre farm with pastures, a wooded area and lots of cows and wild critters all around. We are remodeling and had to take some of our fences down so the property is not fully fenced. We like this product a lot and it has many features that we enjoy, plus a few that we don't. I recognize that this is intended more for hunting dogs and similar uses, so we are not necessarily using as directed, but with a tad bit more flexibility or functionality this product could be perfect for folks like us. What we love: 1) E-Fence Feature: The app has three different fence modes. Mobile Fence, Geo Fence and E-Fence. The product instructions don't clearly identify the difference between the three fence modes for some reason. I had to go to google to find out from somebody else. However, we use the E-Fence every day. Simply select E-Fence and you can use your finger on the map to draw the boundary for your fence. It's that simple. We drew a boundary around our property. When our dog gets close to the boundary I think he gets a vibration, then a zap. Now he knows to stop before he gets to the fence line or he'll get a surprise. On the plus side, the E-Fence boundary stays programmed into the app. On the negative side, I hate having to manually turn on the E-Fence feature every time I turn on the collar. Sometimes I forget and the dog has been found roaming in the neighbor's pasture a couple of times. 2) Long range. I haven't tested the 2 mile limit but I still get great range and it covers my whole farm. 3) Good batter life. The batteries last all day and part of the next day. Sometimes we forget to turn off the unit so I would say we probably get on average 24 hours of battery life on a charge. 4) Love the map feature on the app. I can see where my dog is, get alerted when he is running and so forth. 5) We love the fact that the collar has a light on it. When it's dark outside our dog is invisible without the collar on. It's nice to look out our door and see where he is at from a distance even without my phone in hand. Things we don't love: 1) While the app is convenient when I'm setting everything up or want to look at the map, I hate that it is required for operation. The app drains my phone batter really quickly. If I close the app the remote control starts beeping incessantly. Honestly, once I set up the E-Fence I would prefer to close the app unless I'm actively tracking our dog. 2) I hate that the E-Fence won't stay on if you turn the units off or close the app. It may not seem like a big deal, but it's tedious to remember to turn on the E-Fence and I sometimes forget. Also, my wife is not tech savvy and can't figure out how to use the app anyway (therefore it is only on my phone) making the whole thing useless if I'm not home. 3) Frustrating that my phone and the app need to be within Bluetooth distance of the remote for the whole thing to work. This really needs a feature that allows the system to lock in the settings without the phone around. Like it or not, we use this as a tool to keep our dog from wandering off if we leave the farm to go grocery shopping or something. I can't leave my phone home just to keep the collar working. 4) the E-Fence boundary is not super accurate. The map appears to use a Google Maps image (or some similar service). I can zoom in pretty good and set the boundary but in practice the boundaries are sometimes as much as 50 to 80 feet off of the fence lines even though the fence lines appear quite dead on in the app. Overall we really like the collar. It does it's job and we use it every day. I think it is well worth the money after considering several other products. While we don't use it strictly as intended, it suits our needs just fine. There are some things that I would recommend to the manufacturer though by way of improvement: 1) As mentioned above, provide a feature that allows a user to lock in the settings so that the remote can function without being connected to the app. 2) It's great that this unit identifies when a dog is running. Can you also add a feature to identify when he is digging? How about when he is barking? This is a training collar and it would be great if we could use it to train for those other things too. ... show more

  • Handy collar
Size: Path 2
This is a nice collar and overall I'm happy with it. The two issues I have with it that I knocked off a star for are: 1. The e-fence boundaries are unreliable (dog getting buzzed when he's well within the parameters) and hard to set (it's picky about where you place them). 2. I wish the remote had more buttons to communicate with the collar, it just has one button that sends the signal from the last signal you hit on your phone. If you need to change from a vibrate to a nick you have to pull up your phone to send a different signal. Which can't always be done quickly and usually I need to do it quickly. But I like that I can see where he is and where he's been on the map, what he's doing, distance traveled, how fast he's going, etc. ... show more

  • Love these collars!
Size: Path 2 - 2 Dogs
First off, NO monthly fees!! But I do love these collars, they work great! I have 3 girls and I love knowing and seeing where they are at all times. It is great that there are three different fencing options to have so you can do whatever works for you! I also enjoy that you can have more than one fencing saved. Meaning I have a fence that notifies me when they are out of boundary for our house, my parents, my mother-in-laws and my brother’s house and I could still create more! They are waterproof, just make sure the charging port is shut after you charge it! Battery life is consistent! My girls are outside all day long so the battery life does go kind of fast but not a problem for us. Start out low when figuring out your dog’s nick. My girls are bigger dogs and I only have their nick set at 40 and they come back asap with it that low. Definitely has a stronger nick than our last collars had. ... show more
