This kit is engaging for kids, and does provide them with some familiarity with wiring together electronics components. But they enjoy painting the case more. A bit of plastic wrap over the speakers keeps the paint off the speaker cones, and can be torn out later. I was envisioning this being used with an old iPhone, but the device of choice is a Bluetooth karaoke microphone, with built-in music and effects. So, perhaps the tiny size is a good thing, or the karaoke would drive everyone crazy.

Since this was more for my Son than myself, I had him write most of this review. I got the Gleamkid DIY Speaker Box Kit for my birthday, and it was so much fun to build! The instructions were really easy to follow, and I felt like an engineer putting everything together. I liked that it had two power options, so I could use batteries or just plug it in with the USB. The coolest part was how good the sound turned out. I didn’t expect it to be that loud, but the stereo surround sound really worked. It felt awesome knowing that I built a real speaker myself, and now I use it to play my music all the time! The best part, though, was getting to paint it however I wanted. The kit came with six different paint colors and two brushes, so I made mine look super cool with bright designs. I even added some personal touches to make it unique. It was like mixing art with science, which made the whole thing even more fun. I’m really proud of how it turned out, and my friends were impressed when they saw and heard it. If you like building stuff and want a cool project that you can use afterward, I’d totally recommend this kit!

Ok for what it is. Will not work unless you solder the wires together. The battery compartment is as cheap as it can get, will not hold the middle battery in place unless you wrap tape around the device.

Perfect for a first time builder to end up with something fully functional that will not end up in a junk drawer like most other stem kits. Very easy to construct but still leaves a feeling of accomplishment that raises their moral and leaves them wanting to build more devices. Great way to get your kids interested in electronics and basic electrical engineering. With the shell being made of laser cut wood it is also easy to modify in case they want to Frankenstein another project in to the case or add some sound reactive RGB, etc. For the price it can't be beat. Perfect as a gift as well.
