For Christian Dior, perfume was "a door opening into a hidden world." His first, Miss Dior, inspired by the lush gardens of his childhood home in Normandy, forged an inextricable link between his fashion and fragrance creations. Other scents were inspired by evenings in southern France, lit with fireflies and scented with jasmine. The rose bowers of his family home in Granville; his old mill country house; and the Château de la Colle Noire near Grasse--where jasmine, tuberose, and May roses reign supreme and are still cultivated--inspired Dior's most memorable creations. Flowers were also at the heart of Dior's fashion, from the women-flowers that inspired the late 1940s New Look to the swishing, blossom-like ball gowns embroidered with lavish floral motifs. They have inspired all of the designers who followed him at the House of Dior, from Yves Saint Laurent to John Galliano, and Raf Simons to Maria Grazia Chiuri. I haven’t fully read it yet, but, I love it. There are just as many or more photos and descriptions of flowers and gardens than there are of Dior’s fashions. I really didn’t know very much about Dior (or Nick Knight) but have found this fascinating. The section of photographs of Mr. Knight’s Roses is just georgeous! I actually consider myself more interested in flowers than fashion, so I was very surprised and delighted with purchase. ... show more

I purchased this book after seeing the recent movie, "Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris", and became intrigued by the exquisite workmanship the Dior atelier produced. The book is absolutely beautiful, showcasing in large, beautiful photographs, the gardens, homes, flowers, perfumes, jewels and embroidered gowns that take your breath away. As the book is quite large, so are the close-up photographs printed on thick, creamy paper. This is a treasure and a book I never tire of gazing at. I'm a girlie-girl with a deep appreciation of Mrs. Harris's desperate quest of a Dior gown. This book is those whom Dior's words resonate: "I designed clothes for flowerlike women, with rounded shoulders, full feminine busts and handspan waits above enormous spreading skirts." Full of wonderful floral and detailed fashion photography spanning decades, the book includes lovely vellum overlays. Interesting historical tidbits round out this impressive book on Dior and the floral inspiration for which the designer and the House of Dior is known.
