  • Great game wrong region
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
Loved it it has a lot of replay value since you can't get the true ending and cannot keep everyone alive the first play through it has several endings to it and the game itself is several hours. There's new game plus so yer keeping yer levels and digimon note some parts are voice acted and some are not the writings in English but the voice acting is not still it's nice to listen to. It's not the biggest on a graphical since but the drawings are nice you should look up some on this game to make sure you'll really like it. My only complaint is I got the wrong region but it still worked and there was no censorship so I don't care to much ... show more

  • A Great Digimon Story but the Fighting is Lackluster
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
I've been a fan of the Digimon games since Digimon World on the PS1. Right on up through Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Digimon World: Next Order. And I was glad to see this game finally come out despite every delay thrown in its way. For newcomers to the Digimon franchise, it's a good starting point. Little previous knowledge is required to enjoy this game, though don't make the mistake of thinking it's anything like Pokemon. You will get your socks knocked off in that regard. This story is DARK. Depressing. Beautiful artwork and a haunting soundtrack do a wonderful job of driving home the point of how dire the kids' situation is in this game. I've played through 2 of the 4 available endings and they are definite gut-punches, though in a good way if you appreciate that kind of thing. For those who are familiar with the Digimon franchise and particularly the games: THIS IS NOT WORLD. It is not a Digimon World game in any way, shape or form. It's more akin to the Cyber Sleuth series where it's primarily dialogue with some combat peppered in. And that is where the game falters and lost a star from me. The combat...kind of blows. The visual novel is excellent, if you like visual novels. The dialogue choices can be a bit misleading, but you'll quickly notice a pattern of how to reply in regards to the karma system, so it's simplistic at the same time. You can always save before you make a choice and restart if you don't get the reaction you wanted, which I found myself doing quite a bit. The combat in this game is a total drag. It's a turn-based tactical RPG in the same vein as something like Fire Emblem. The sprites are beautifully drawn and the maps are nice, but man, does the combat SLOG. I found myself dialing down the difficulty, not because the game is hard, but because I wanted to blitz through the fights to get back to the story. The battles in this game are just plain boring and really drag it down. It's also fairly obvious the translation was either rushed or careless with some misspellings, wonky phrasing and pronoun switching. I also wish it was dubbed, but understand why they didn't and the Japanese VAs do a very good job even though I admittedly don't understand much Japanese. It's not unpleasant to listen to. That said, if you like Digimon and can deal with 1-2 boring ass fights per section, then the story is very much worth it. If you're in it for the battles, I would look elsewhere. These fights are honestly neither fun nor challenging. Dialing up the difficulty, I feel like just gives the enemy more HP and does nothing in terms of the computer's intelligence. ... show more

  • Really surprising but great Digimon game!
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
I've been anticipating this game since the moment it was announced, delays and all, and I'm not disappointed at all. I'm pretty far into the game and I'll give my impressions of it so far. I'll update this review after finishing the game, but I'm optimistic that my opinion of it will be higher when that happens. So let's get a major point out of the way: this is largely a "visual novel" game. For those unfamiliar, that means it's heavily story-based with a ton of dialogue and text to read/listen to (partially voiced, Japanese only). You'll have some control of who you talk to and where to go, but it'll be through more "point and click" actions and menus. And you'll make significant decisions that impact gameplay and/or story. Speaking of the story, it's surprisingly mature and dark for a Digimon game. Horror and thriller elements abound. The name is relevant, as survival is a huge overtone for the game's theme and story. So in addition to being a visual novel, this is a a SRPG/TRPG (strategy RPG/tactical RPG). There are combat segments to the game where your Digimon fight others on a grid-based area with turn-based play. You have your main partners, which can evolve, and you can "capture" other Digimon in encounters in a Persona or Shin Megami Tensei style, where you speak to the Digimon, answer their questions, and then ask them to join you if you answer well according to their personality. Game as a whole really reminds me of SMT: Devil Survivor, which is a huge plus for me and anyone else who likes that. The graphics aren't AAA, but are still beautiful and stylistic. I really enjoy the characters and the backgrounds, but they may not be everyone's cup of tea. Honestly I really love the game so far, and I recommend anyone on the fence to give it a try. Like I said I'll update this review with my final thoughts, but still. Give this a try! Update: I finished my first playthrough in about 30 hours, and still gotta say this was a really good game. Not perfect, but still great if you're okay with visual novels with gameplay elements. If you don't like visual novels, then watch a little footage of it online first as this might not be for you. Only negative I'll give is that the combat is pretty simplistic and honestly a little too easy, even on the hardest difficulty. It wasn't bad - I've played bad before, but that part could've been better. ... show more
