So I am old school and love holding my music in my hands. I have an extensive cd collection. I couldn't do the download music because of lack of sound quality. I invested in this player hesitantly because of price, but let me tell you, worth every penny. It's like listening to a compact disk for the first time. Sound quality is incredible. Every detail of the music is brought out crystal without sounding too digital. You could say a warm sounding feel. It flows effortlessly. Sorry. I'm listening to some Pink Floyd as I write this. Anyways, I've had this unit for about six months now. No issues as of yet. I recommend the optical line hook up instead of the analog for best sound playback. Display is pretty simple, but who cares. Get it, we'll worth the dough. Oh yeah, only for stars because of the remote. For the price it could have been lighted. ... show more

    • The dreaded "Can't Read Disc" error

This CD player worked fine, and sounded great, for six and a half months. A couple days ago, it stopped reading discs, displaying the "Can't Read Disc" error. That error was common for many of the CD-Rs that I had burned, but never for commercial CDs. Now every CD, commercial or otherwise, triggers the error, without exception. I tried leaving it off for a few hours, unplugging it, just to see if it were just some weird glitch, but that didn't resolve the problem. (I saw that at least one other Amazon reviewer reported this problem within having the unit for less than a year, so it doesn't appear to be a one-off problem.) So, faced with the cost to ship it to a repair center (and probably springing for shipping insurance, too), and given the reports I've seen of repairs taking four to six months (with no guarantee that the warranty would be honored), I decided to take the cover off and see whether cleaning the lens would help. I tried a dry cotton swab first, which didn't help. Isopropyl alcohol on the lens didn't help, either. I also sprayed the inside with compressed air, although that was unnecessary because the inside of the player was entirely dust-free. And there were no obvious failed components inside (e.g., broken belt, disconnected ribbon cable, etc.). I've decided to consider my Denon purchase a sunk cost and put whatever money I'd spend on the repair toward buying another CD player. In almost fifty years of owning stereo equipment, I've had only one item that failed so soon after acquisition, and that was a cheapo Radio Shack all-in-one system that I purchased about 45 years ago. Everything else has lasted years or decades. Too bad, because the sound of the Denon player was outstanding. I rarely buy extended warranties but, like others, I recommend doing so if you purchase this CD player. I now wish I had done so. ... show more

This unit replaces a very old Denon multi-disc player. I play though coax into my Denon amp and the sound is great. Seems solidly built. When I bought the 900 it was only about $25 more than the 600. I appreciate having both optical and coax output (in addition to RCA) and front panel USB input. (My Denon amp has USB input but the plug is on the back - not useful when the amp is in a cabinet.) I sometimes put off-the-air recordings from computer onto a USB stick and play them through the amp. (I probably could play them directly from the computer using the amp's HEOS.) There are several good and reasonably-priced CD players out there. The DCD is a little pricey but somehow I wanted it as the companion to the PMA600. The Denon literature plays up the analog side of things, which I quickly ignored by connecting a digital cable. However, it kept bugging me and so I tried it. To my surprise, the analog connection produced the better sound with practically no background noise. Choose analog mode and pure direct on the PMA, pure direct mode 2 on the DCD.
