  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Updated: Rear surround channels dead on arrival
Style: AVR-X2800H
Updated to report after replacement of defective unit. Thank you Amazon for incredible customer service! Update - I received a new AVR-X2800H as a replacement from Amazon less than 24 hours after contacting their customer service. The new one worked perfectly! The sound is truly amazing and it has really improved our "home theater" experience. My only reason for 4 stars vice 5 is a bit of a misleading advertising by Denon. Denon lists the AVR-X2800H as a "7.2" receiver. It does individually control the 7 primary speakers and has 2 ports for subwoofers but it treats the latter as a single unit. That means the "Audyssey" microphone system used to calibrate the speakers does not differentiate between the two subwoofers so the only means to "balance" the subwoofers is via their individual gain controls. The Denon is really a 7.1 system with 2 speaker ports. For all intent, any rca plug splitter ($6.99) on a normal 7.1 system would provide the exact same function. Original review - I purchased this as part of my basement theater setup and because it claimed to support phono inputs without requiring a pre-amp. Unfortunately, I did not set up the unit quickly as we were still under construction so I'm over the 30 day window. On the speaker setup section, as soon as the unit switched from the front, center and surround speaker tests to the rear speakers, there was a click and then nothing. I moved the speaker connections around to try again but it is clearly the receiver as the speakers in any other position work great. Now I have to negotiate with DENON to get a replacement/repair and of course I could end up with a reconditioned unit. It's a terrible wakeup call when spending more than $1000 for a receiver! ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Super Awesome! Get it if you can swing the price!
Style: AVR-X4800H
Update: Dirac Live is out, making this AVR just amazing! You'll need a MiniDSP Umik-1, a mic stand for positioning, your laptop and a Dirac Live Full** license for the 4800. It really is able to bring everything into this cohesive sound stage that is so much better than Audyssey XT32. If you were looking for a reason to upgrade to a 3800 or 4800, it's here now. I knew it would be, but Dirac Live is a game changer for Denon and Marantz. Highly, highly recommend! So the AVR-X4800h is really everything most people could possibly need for excellent and engaging sound at home. If you can swing the price, it's amazing! Just waiting for Dirac Live to release in March of '23 lol. Now let me tell you what you need to know about owning this thing. You need great sounding speakers that will probably cost quite a bit more than this (5.1.4 for atmos is my setup), high quality speaker wire and banana plugs, high quality HDMI cables and to do a little research on operating it. Until Direc Live is released you'll be using Audyssey, which is good with but with some limitations. You'll need the Audyssey app on a large phone screen or tablet. Set up the speakers, turn off midrange compensation, cap the Eq to 300 hz on each speaker, turn off all the extra junk and eq. After you upload your settings to the receiver, go into the receiver settings menu and make sure the volumes actually match and sound good, I usually bump all of them up from default settings that Audyssey selects during setup. Now you need quality sources right? Apple TV 4K, Xbox Series X (Purchase the Atmos App), PC with HDMI, and I'm sure the PS5 is good, just not my cup of tea. If you have a Blu Ray player, find some atmos content. I wouldn't recommend using "smart TV" apps and arc back to the receiver, you don't need that nonsense laggy TV stuff, just get an Apple TV and everything will be seamless (not even an Apple fan, but it's the best streaming device out by far). I am coming from a X3600h and I can say with confidence that now is a good time to make an upgrade. This one is actually made in Japan, not exactly common these days. If you're a Marantz fan it's equivalent to a Cinema 40, except about 1k less lol. Most people that write bad reviews either don't bother to look into what they are buying, how to use it, or went cheap on the stuff you need to let this thing shine such as: speakers, sub, wiring etc. This is an amazing and sophisticated sound computer essentially, a little steep on price but should last you a long long time. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Denon X3800H
Style: AVR-X3800H
I’ve never heard it’s competition such as the Yamaha or Onkyo but wow I’m I impressed. I replaced an outdated Onkyo recover with the Denon and the sound is unmatched. Really clear and crisp sound. I can hear sounds in movies that I’ve never heard before and if you have a Dolby ATMOSPHERE setup then I think this would be perfect. If you have the money, I would definitely say upgrade to the 4800h because it’s more powerful but If you are on a budget then get this and add a external amp for the front stage. So far, I’m really impressed with this receiver but I’ve never heard it’s completion for comparison. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best 2.1 AV/receivers available
Style: AVR-X4800H
I love this Denon AV receiver. I originally purchased the Onkyo rz50 but the hdmi board on the unit was so buggy and the unit would lose sound or picture randomly and the ps5 did not work properly with the Onkyo so I return it and went with the moe expensive Denon unit. the Denon x4800h works flawlessly with everything I have hooked in...ps5,bluray player and a media player all work as intended. The rz50 was a better value if working since Dirac live came free with it. unfortunately dirac live is an expensive upgrade option on the Denon. The Denon has a better 32 bit dac in it compared to the rz50 which only came with a 24 bit dac and the Denon is made in Japan which is a plus. the Denon x4800h is a great new Av receiver and the 2.1 hdmi board is bug free. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Replaced a 15 year old Denon but be careful in setup.
Style: AVR-X2800H
Great sounding unit. Setup was easy and straight forward. I would skip the network setup and do it once you have everything up and running. Mine tuned to an internet radio station and blew my front ORB speakers during the network setup. My bad for not checking the volume setting! An $800.00 mistake. Otherwise the sound is was better than my 15 year old Denon. ... show more
