The sound is fine, as expected. The menus are fairly well organized. I especially like the Internet Radio feature. A few issues though: 1) Volume control is SO ANNOYING. If I press and hold for more than a couple of seconds it instantly snaps to a MUCH higher (or lower) volume, vs just speeding up. This also happens if I slowly push the volume button repeatedly (ie, when trying to avoid the issue). After several pushes it does the same thing. So very annoying, and something that just should not be. 2) PC will not recognize HDMI connection to receiver as an audio device (was not a problem with Yamaha receiver) so I have to use a different path to get audio from PC to receiver. Denon's answer to this was "it was not designed for connections from PCs." 3) When entering HEOS account password no option to "see password". Entering a strong password using the remote is difficult enough, would be nice to be able to see if I've made a mistake. ... show more

Solid power and quality for the money. Importantly, supports VRR, 120Hz 4K HDR. HDMI CEC works well. Make sure to switch input HDMI type to 8K enhanced if you want 120Hz 4K, if you don’t you’ll think your cable is messed up. Getting virtual surround to work with a fire tv cube doesn’t work and seems to be a combination of Denon weirdness and the audio formats the fire tv supports. An Xbox series x outputting DTS surround can change modes to virtual surround, not that you’d want to necessarily, but this option doesn’t exist for most Dolby options or PCM. If you want to listen to music on Spotify or a YouTube video, you won’t get sound from your rear or even center channel. ... show more

    • Great receiver, volume knob is weirdly configured

Love the rest of the receiver, hate the volume adjustment. (1) it’s in weird half increments (2) turning the knob, or pressing up or down on the remote doesn’t result in linear changes, so it’s really hard to gauge how you are actually changing the volume.

The media could not be loaded. Took a chance and bought this unit refurbished for 220$ does everything that it says it does Using this with JBL Northridge series speakers and denon sub It feels very cheap nothing like all of my dads older Denon receivers. Maybe that’s just how they make them now? The receiver is very light and the volume Nob feels cheap and almost like I could just rip it off. That being said it does sound alright and the hdmi inputs work. I have my Apple TV switch ps4 and my desktop going into my receiver then to my tv. I don’t notice any latency or resolution decreases! For 200$ I am very satisfied with my purchase however I couldn’t justify buying this for the retail price of 400$ ... show more

I'm very pleased with my purchase so far. The shipping was fast and the packaging was perfect. No blemishes and the contents were complete. The quick setup guide was easy to follow. The AVR-S970H makes my 4 year old Andrew Jones designed Pioneer speaker system sound amazing. 4 - FS-SP52's towers for the front and side surrounds along with 2 - SP-BS22's for the rear surrounds and a CS-22 center channel. Two Polk PS10 subs also work great with this AVR. It's a low budget system with an expensive sound. Streaming movies are just like sitting in the theater. Music is crystal clear as well.     • The Denon AVR-S970H is a Beast!

I have for some time felt my Sony AV receiver just wasn't up to par on the sound. It also didn't have a phono input for my vintage 1980's Dual turntable I had been wanting to rehab, so I made the decision to update/upgrade receivers. Never having owned any Denon product I went strictly by online reviews and features. I am not disappointed! This receiver has sufficient power to rattle your windows, or reproduce the softest music you might desire. The remote control is used for the setup, which is a menu-driven app within the receiver itself, and even has little videos for the total newbie who doesn't kow how to hook up speakers. There is also an app for your smartphone that doubles as an extra remote control. I hooked this receiver up to my 7.1 speaker array which includes DCM TP260-CH pair as the front (and main 2 channel) speakers. I am an old DCM nut from the early 80's; I love my old Time Windows and the newer DCMs have video shielding, so I updated a few years back. My Dual turntable now has been refurbished, so I felt ready to get a new receiver and give it a spin. Prime Delivery could not be fast enough to ease my anticipation. And this new Denon rocks! I never heard vinyl records sound so good! This Denon unit not only SOUNDS superb; the video is breathtaking as well on a LG G1 4K largescreen TV. Watching 4K Top Gun: Maverick exceeded any experience I could possibly have watching in a theater. Whatever equipment you currently have, I believe the Denon AVR-S970H will improve your experience whether you are watching movies or listening to your favorite tunes. I am not a video game player, so I cannot critique the processors for that; however, I would be shocked if the Denon did not deliver top notch gaming performance as well. Everything is well thought out from the appearance to the setup to the controls. Ample HDMI connections (see back panel pic) and eARC functionality make it as versatile as any unit can be for home theater. I especially like the flexibilty of assignable speaker connections for surround versus zone 2 (a second room) and 8K processing (even though I have no 8K TV). My ONLY criticism is that there are no tape deck connections as Denon has on some of their less expensive stereo amplifiers. When I wrote them about this on their website, their answer was that cassette tsape decks are not coming back like vinyl is. (Excuse me?!) I guess Denon thinks one cannot be both a surround sound home theater buff and an analog music buff at the same time. The Denon AVR-S970H is a 90 W/channel beast of a performer that won't let you down; it is most worthy of your consideration and should be a dependable unit for years to come. My first one came faulty from the factory and shorted out but after it was replaced I am beyond happy with it! The sound quality is great and it was a great upgrade to my old 5.2 Denon. I would highly recommend this receiver!
