  • A Shmup for only the most die-hard fans of the genre.
Demon Throttle is a Shmup released on Nintendo Switch in 2022 only in physical form, something that is strangely a part of the game’s marketing push. I suppose developer Doinksoft and publisher Devolver Digital are banking on this forced scarcity to drive up sales of the game. Anyway, this game puts players in the role of a cowboy and a vampiress chasing after a gang of demons who stole the vampiress’s chalices and “kissed” the cowboy’s wife. The characters and story are one of the more delightful parts of this game, with the cowboy’s delightfully naive demeanor and the vampiress’s emotional outbursts making for some truly great interactions. This accompanies a colorful retro 2D pixel art style designed to look like an 8-bit era game, along with a chiptune soundtrack and some wonderfully muffled digitized voice clips for the characters. This is a great example of how you do retro-style nostalgia. The gameplay itself is mostly very good too, with solo players able to swap between the two characters to take advantage of their strengths – the cowboy shoots straight and can unload four shots before reloading, while the vampiress has a split shot that only shoots twice before needing to pause for a short moment. And as these characters are walking through the game’s auto-scroll areas on foot, they can dodge enemy shots by jumping over them, and must take out obstacles barring their way by shooting them. There are even some great boss fights here to keep things interesting. The problem is unfortunately the challenge level. Each of the two characters can take only four hits before dying, and losing both before completing a stage will make for a permanent game over and a need to restart from the beginning. This feels needlessly difficult, and it takes what is otherwise a highly enjoyable and creative entry in the genre and makes it tedious and frustrating as you must replay the first few stages over and over again whenever you die and need to restart. I can’t help but feel like Demon Throttle deliberately makes things difficult for players, and I don’t see any good reason why. Why make this game physical-only? Why the perma-death and need to restart from the beginning? If it wasn’t for these issues, I’d likely be singing the praises of this game, but as it is, I can only say that this game will likely only be enjoyed by the most skilled and patient fans of the Shmup genre. ... show more

  • Brilliant Retro Shooter
I think people are really going into the game with the wrong mindset. At $20 it's absolutely worth the price. If you're not a fan of shmups, this game won't change your mind, but if you love shmups, you'll appreciate all the design choices made here. I've never played a shmup with so much discovery. Destroying every block to find power ups is a very interesting mechanic. Not to mention there's a secret underground area hidden in every level. You have chalices to collect as well as entries for your bestiary. There are weather effects that change how levels play out, as well as a progression system for killing enemies. I absolutely love the NES aesthetic, and how the game feels impossible on your first run, but the more you play it, the more you understand the systems and how to get farther. And I haven't even mentioned the secret turn based battles you can unlock after boss fights under special conditions. Demon Throttle seems simple, but there is a lot to discover here. I'm consistently discovering new gameplay mechanics and strategies and unlocking more features like borders, sound test, and a bestiary. The lack of continues is perfect because it forces you to engage with the game and understand why some people absolutely love shmups. If you just spam continues to get through a shmup, then you won't understand the nuances of the design choices. ... show more

  • Mediocre game
There really needs to be a metacritic review by now, but I'll say this game is kind of mediocre. Not many play options and it's a little hard as well from the beginning. I guess if you like Shmups or shooter ups you can judge better but that's my take. 6.5/10

  • Physical only, the way it should be
This game is physical only, the way it should be. No being charged for a download, no DLC, no micro transactions, no unfinished game, no patches, no updates, no having to be connected to some online platform at any point, you actually get something in return for your money, aren't financially rewarding bad practices such as being charged for a download, DLC, micro transactions, games intentionally released unfinished, patches, updates, having to connect to an online platform at any point etc. This is the way all games should be sold, the industry was much better for the players when games were sold this way. I don't care about it not coming with the download code it said it would and neither should you, if you want a download then get it for free on PC by p1rating it. You shouldn't pay for downloads. Stop paying for downloads. ... show more

  • Meh
Kind of a lame novelty thing. Feel like this game would be kind of disappointing if I bought it on sale for $5 digitally. Physical only to drive up interest in what is a somewhat simple game that would normally be quite a bit more affordable given what's actually here. On the plus side, it is quite challenging and has a retro arcade vibe which is neat. It's just very, very simple in terms of gameplay and progression. ... show more
