  • Bought with Extension and Stand. Combined Review.
Wanted a Time Saver Got a Time Eater. Had an older Delta Midi Lathe. Needed an extension to do some longer pieces. Extensions for my older lathe were no longer available. Seriously looked at some very nice longer lathes. Decided to buy a new Delta lathe with extension table and stand. I was not prepared for all the work required to put it in to operation. I am NOT a perfectionist. Just needed something to turn some items longer than 15 inches. I hope to someday be happy with this machine. So far it has been a time eater with nothing to show. This review is for all three components: 1. Delta Industrial 46-460 12-1/2-Inch Variable-Speed Midi Lathe Spent a great deal of the time just getting the lathe ready to use. The basic machine seems to ‘operate’ the way I would expect. I AM looking forward to actually using it. But for now, because of the issues with the lathe bed, the extension and the extension stand, I had to use a friend’s lathe for the intended project. Honestly, I’ve not been able to do much more than get it usable in the weeks I’ve had it. My time working on the turning project was spent on a friend’s machine. Bed Bumps. The bed has several casting spurs underneath that prohibit the tools from moving easily along the surface. Especially near the edge furthest from the head stock. Spent a great deal of time grinding, filing and sanding. (See Pictures) 2. Delta Industrial 46-463 Modular Midi-Lathe Bed Extension MANY HUGE BED BUMPS edges and underneath. Lots of time getting this extension to fit properly and allow the tailstock and tool-rest to move the length of the bed. (Picture) 3. Delta Industrial 46-464 Midi-Lathe Modular Stand Extension OMG! Center post had to be for a different model. The threads for the center support were too small (had to tap them to accept the foot). However, even when the foot was fully extended, it would not reach the floor. None of the holes were appropriately placed on the top and I had to essentially measure and drill new holes to set the center platform correctly. (Pictures) Even my dog was wondering why I was spending so much time on this. I’ve now got it into my shop and could actually start using it. I even bought a new set of carbide cutters ….. But every time I look at it, I get a bit angry. I love my shop and my tools. Emotions come unbidden. I’m looking forward to feeling better about this purchase, but I smack myself for not getting one of the higher end machines with a longer bed. ... show more

  • Solid & sturdy but imprecisely machined.
This solid and sturdy extension matches the construction of the Delta stand and midi-lathe. Unfortunately the center post adjustable foot was not tapped well and the thread did not accept the bolt of the foot. I had to re-tap it. The parts are not precision machined and fitting them together took several tries with repeat adjustments. The junction of the extension was a 1/16th off from the main rail causing the tool support and tail stock to hang up at the junction. I had to file them down to allow smooth sliding. In the end, it works well and enables me to turn longer pieces. ... show more

  • Be ready to redrill and tap the support post.
The center support is drilled and tapped for the wrong size threaded foot. I had to redrill and tap the hole for 3/8” 16 tpi bolt. Not hard to do according to a number of posts on the internet, this is a common problem. Other than that the extension worked fine. It would have beed nice if retractable casters were an option. I added some yo make it easy to move the lathe. ... show more

  • It works
It would have been better to purchase this when the lathe was new but I was not aware I would be needing an extension. I was not able to put the center adjusting screw in the post but other than that everything fit.

  • Difficult to line-up
This extension is one of the things that make the 46-460 such a great lathe. The only down side is that unlike the old Delta la200 lathe, you now have to line up the lathe, extension, stand, and stand extension. Takes a lot of patience to get everything lined up right. If it is not all perfect the tail stock will not glide on the table. ... show more

  • Delta Midi Lathe Modular Stand
The stand works well for me. I bought both the stand and the extension when I bought the bed extension for the lathe. After installing the bed extension, I had to shim both ends of the lathe with washers to level it, but it went smoothly and works perfectly. Because of my workspace, I mounted my stand on locking casters, not ideal, but it works well for me. I didn't use the tool holder built into the stand at first, but have come to use it constantly. Everything about this works as expected. Nice, solid and I'd buy it again. ... show more

  • Tolerances not good!
There is a tapped hole at the bottom of the vertical leg for a leveling screw to be inserted. Not only was the hole too small for the bolt to screw into is was not even tapped! After drilling a new hole and tapping the hole would the leveling screw work.

  • Perfect fit
Fit perfectly. Now the lathe is able to handle much larger projects. Assembly was easy. Solid and heavy.
