MATERIALS IN OUR SOCKS Every material we use in our socks has been carefully chosen and tested to meet our rigorous durability standards. We currently use natural and synthetic fibers, and only 3 types of fiber per sock. As you’d expect, we are actively investigating and testing new fibers and yarn blends that do not appear in our current products. We’ve prioritized Merino wool throughout our product lines and our goal of producing the most responsibly made product is reflected in our commitment to the success of the Responsible Wool Standard. MERINO WOOL Merino wool is the most important and relied upon fiber in our products and accounted for 56% of our yarn consumption by weight last year. For many years we’ve prioritized the use of Merino wool exclusively from sheep that have not been exposed to the practice of mulesing. In early 2019 we made a commitment to support the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) and shift 100% of our wool supply to RWS-certified Merino wool. RWS is a voluntary standard with strict guidelines to protect animal welfare and adhere to progressive, sustainable farm and land management practices while maintaining traceability throughout the entire supply chain. Although the market share for RWS is only estimated at ~1% of global wool production, the number of certified sources has grown substantially over the last couple years. Today, 100% of the wool we procure is RWS-certified. RECYCLED NYLON We use REPREVE, a nylon 6 fiber made from pre-consumer industrial waste that would otherwise be landfilled or downcycled. Using REPREVE instead of virgin nylon allows us to offset the use of crude oil, benzene, cyclohexane, and other harmful hydrocarbons that are involved in the production of virgin fiber. In short, using recycled nylon conserves energy and water and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing. While we aim to reduce our use of virgin nylon in our products, recycled nylon only accounted for 4% of our nylon consumption last year. We’re actively working with our suppliers to source more recycled nylon so we can incorporate it across our product lines. To date, nylons generated from pre- consumer waste material have held up well against our durability requirements, but we’d like to find an equally good source of post-consumer recycled nylon or yarns that blend both pre and post-consumer nylon. SPANDEX/ELASTANE We use Lycra to provide elasticity, strength, and form-fitting comfort. While spandex accounts for no more than 5% of the fiber used in our finished product, it represented 27% of the raw materials we procured last year. Like conventional nylon, spandex is derived from petroleum and has been important to the performance of our products. Unfortunately, it’s the most difficult material in our fiber mix to replace with a recycled alternative. When it comes to synthetics, we’re primarily focused on converting virgin nylon and polyester to recycled alternatives. However, we’re also looking for functional, recycled spandex alternatives. • $25 for a pair of socks? Surely you jest!
$25 for a pair of socks? Surely you jest! Turns out, that's a bargain... and don't call me Shirley. Allow me to expound. I'm a wildland firefighter with my foot in a tall leather boot 16-20hrs a day. I'm a size 10 boot and the Large size sock fit perfect. I always wear Merino wool, usually packages of 4 for $24 or so. But I will say, that these socks, hold up the best, feel taller and way softer. It's like wrapping your foot in a freakin' summer cloud made of your mother's hugs. I have every intention of buying another pair or two at least once a year until I'm overrun with these precious things... like woolen zombie virus outbreak in my sock drawer. I wear them year round with any footwear, dress shoes or sneakers, you bet. If anyone comments, I just dead stare them out and ask, "And where were you on 9/11? (for the record, I was a toddler but they assume me not to be someone to be trifled with and they move along) WARNING: If wear these socks and expect the following side effects: -Increased Confidence -Adding 2" + to your height -Benching more weight -All male offspring -Chiseled Jawline -Short Hard-Rock intros to play any time you enter a room -And best of all, every time you put them on, somewhere in the world, a pair of Crocs melt. So what are you waiting for, take out a second mortgage on your home, and add these priceless beauties to your wardrobe. ... show more

  • 300lb hiker tested over 100's of miles = Better than Smart Wool Socks
Size: Large Color: Olive
Wore through my Smart Wool Socks and needed some new socks while thru hiking the Appalachian trail. Compare socks used for hundreds of miles of wear in boots by a 280+ pound man with 30+ pounds of gear on his back and you have a durability test that shows Darn Tough at the top of the list. Comfort and durability are amazing. Pro Tip - Wear socks inside out and always put the right sock on the right foot and left on left from day one. Wearing socks inside out force any seams or bumps to rub on the boot more than your foot. Using the same sock on the same foot prevents the section by your smaller toes from getting stretched out as far as the big toe. When you swap socks from right to left over the course of its life you will stretch out the whole toe section and create potential for extra fabric to bunch or wrinkle in your boot. ... show more

  • Rarely does a product work this well.
Size: X-Large Color: Olive
Darn Tough or somebody seems to have quite an interest in how they fit so I will start there. I bought X-Large and they feel a tad snug. I have average width size 13 Mens feet with a high arch. The interesting thing about these socks is that when a sock feels snug it means they are going to be cold as they will not trap any air if the sock is stretched or squeezed thin- but not these socks. Not at all, I need allot of performance from my fishing socks as I wade in cold rivers and and slog through PNW winters for hours on end in pursuit of Steelhead Salmon Trout and peace and quiet. I've tried all sorts of socks, pairs of socks, cheap wool socks, expensive wool socks, athletic socks, hiking socks, with the best up intill now being Smartwool hiking socks, but these are the best BY FAR. My feet simply do not get cold in these. It is pretty amazing. I'll theorize that the blend of fibers is such that they have sufficient structure to trap air no matter what- and maybe that is why they feel a tad snug..?.. In any case, my dogs stay warm, yet they can breath so they stay dry, and at the end of a long day fishing I just leave them on. That is a first! really a great product. 6 stars! BTW I've washed them 6-8 times and so far so good. If they last a season (20-25 days or so) I'll would be thrilled to buy another pai and I might not need to. ... show more

  • DARN TOUGH VERMONT SOCKS ARE THE ONLY SOCKS I BUY!
I have been wearing the same pairs of Darn Tough Vermont (DTV) socks for over 15 years. NO holes. NO wear. NO elastic failures. They look and fit as well as the day I bought them. I have always bought the low cut socks for office shoes and athletic shoes. New boots (White's and Red Wing) require new boot socks. Of course I'm going to buy DTV. I didn't even have to think about it. All DTV socks have a LIFETIME WARRANTY, which means I will never have to purchase replacements. I have been partial to the Cool Max material, but am finding these Merino wool boot socks to be even more comfortable. Also, the wool socks leave my feet feeling softer with less cracking and peeling at my heels. As I am of retirement age, I don't need anything else causing aches and pain! As you get older, you realize that happy feet makes a happy person. Do yourself a HUGE favor...make Darn Tough Vermont your next socks. You will not regret it! ... show more

  • I wouldn't call these hiking socks.
Size: Medium Color: Charcoal
I bought a pair of these to try based on the recommendation of a few people who hunt. These seem to be really quality made socks, and seem to have great support, but hiking socks they are not. The pair I got did not have a flat seam across the toe box. Just putting them on to check the fit I could feel the corner seam on the edge rubbing against my little and big toes. I've had issues in the past with getting hot spots there which went away once I got flat seam socks. These may be great casual wear or general duty work socks, but I could never trust them in the back country. Also, they are a bit rough compared to other brands of merino wool hiking socks I have had. That might not be bad for some, but anything that can rub can ruin a good hike. At nearly half the price, my big box lifetime wool socks are more comfortable and use a higher percentage of wool. While I don't recommend those for hiking, I'd feel more confident wearing those than these Darn Tough hikers on a long trek. Overall, I just think their are better socks out there for nearly the same price as these. ... show more
