  • Enjoyable BUT NEEDS to List Wavelength Size and "nm" To Choose Correct Safety Goggles
Although this machine has been a big learning curve for me, I've been enjoying each project I've done thus far. The first one was off-centered, the second one I neglected to download the jpegged image onto the machine after lining everything up and it engraved the one prior. I have 3 fans going while running this, as it does give off the wood-burn smell and I don't have a laptop computer to handle this, (and the software can't be used with a Chromebook) so I've needed to use a desktop PC (inside the home). I used to dabble in pyrography, but never got past the novice level, so this machine gives me the look I crave for my wooden pieces. I've experimented with different depths, from 40 of 1-100 depth and found that to be a bit too much for my own wooden squares. It didn't cut through to the bottom, not even close, but the very dark lines weren't as clean as I wanted. It is important to use the little black card prior to each project to make sure the laser dot is the absolute smallest it can be for best results. Although I did that each time, I think my power (at 100%) and the depth (at 40) were both too high. Although the manual and software can be somewhat confusing, within the usb software download, there is a MP4 file which also shows a video walk-through to visually help, and I did find it useful. I ended up trying my 3rd project for my square wood piece at 95% power and 29 in depth, and this made my project look much better, cleaner and not so smudgy. Once the laser engraving begins, there's a red line that goes over the image on the screen as well as a green (filling) percentage bar to let one know of the progress. Also, in the bottom right, there's a timer to let one know how long the process has taken, all of which I appreciate. Here's what I've learned thus far: Read through the manual several times and watch the included MP4 on the USB download stick. I placed this small laser machine on a small bamboo cutting board, just in case I messed up and the laser went too far. Also, before beginning the laser cutting process, I put a piece of cardboard very loosely around the sides where there is no protective green shield as I didn't want to accidentally hurt my eyes. I am disappointed that there wasn't additional temporary green shields for the sides, or at least a pair of protective goggles/glasses included. I've looked for some, but am not sure which ones to get for this particular laser. My front green shield had black big smudges of letters on it which isn't a big deal to me, but I just wondered why. For whatever images, convert your project to black and white or gray-scale (not color) before sending to the laser machine for best results. Watching several videos and reading/learning about these style laser printers was also helpful to me. At the bottom of the software screen, there is a “width” and “height” settings area that I've not been able to figure out, as well as being able to completely adjust my image going on exactly where I want it using the software screen alone, I still have to manually adjust my wooden piece, and even then it's hit or miss. When adjusting the laser to the smallest dot, it's awkward to reach in and twist the little knob, so go easy. Although I still feel I have a long way to go to become proficient with this, I find that it does a great job and is very good for beginners (like me) to laser machines, provided one is willing to do a lot of research and self-learning. I do feel that there needs to be more clear, in-depth instructions for every aspect of the software, and most especially, sufficient protection for the eyes besides the single green front shield. Additionally, the lack of wavelength size and “nm” so that one knows which kind of protective eyeware to get is disappointing. I'm still trying to figure out what the “nm” and wavelength is for the laser to get the right protective glasses/goggles. The MP4 video was a thoughtful help, but there's still a lot I don't understand. I've joined a laser machine forum group, read blogs, posts and articles, watched many videos, all of which I think are helpful. For anyone who's been curious and hopeful to own and use a fairly inexpensive, small and quite functional small laser machine, this may be one to consider. Thanks for reading. ... show more

  • Shockingly Wonderful
Honestly, I expected this to be just utter garbage. I did. I'm not ashamed to say, I couldn't have been more wrong. Now, don't get me wrong. This isn't some insanely amazing, high end, be all, end all, laser engraver. Nope. It's a little, portable, kit style engraver. You might even say a toy. It's a toy that really works and works well. Set up of the machine itself was quick & easy. Other than plugging it in, the only thing you have to do is install the safety glass. And, this is where I knocked one star off. It's way too easy to look around to the sides of this thing. No, you won't get a laser in the eye, but you will get some reflection of the wood or other surfaces. Frankly, it's just a tad unsafe, hence four stars. Then, install the software on a computer and hook it up to the USB port. It's that easy. The software is intuitive and worked out of the box. Placement of the object is made simple because you can request a preview, where a very low power light, not the laser, will show you where to place the object. Focusing the laser was a little bit of a challenge, but I got it right enough the first time. Hit go, and this thing is off. It works. Not only does it work, it works really well. The engravings we tested initially, using the included images, came out flawless with excellent detail. So far, we've only played with it on wood. However, we've got some plans to print out a few objects in the 3D printer and then take them over to the engraver to add some fun highlights. I'm looking forward to the outcome. This is a great little toy, but just ever so slightly unsafe. Maybe glasses instead of the window, or three windows, just to be sure. But, except for that, it works and works well. ... show more

  • Slow but does a great job of engraving
Yes this is small, but for most it’s sufficient. I’ll be making ornaments, and small size items so this is perfect. There’s nothing to put together, it’s really ready to go. The biggest problem I had was adding the driver as I kept getting an install error. The software is simple but do yourself a favor and watch some YouTube videos to acclimate yourself to how this works. The other issue is that you need to figure out what the middle of the area is so when you etch it’s centered. There’s a button in the software that centers the laser but then when you run an area test it seems to move to the left side instead of center. So make sure that you practice and test things before putting an item in and messing it up. I posted a quick sample of card stock etch and it’s sharp and neat. Just make sure you focus the beam before every etch. The other shot shows the program and how it shows etch progress (in red). This small coaster sized card took over 30 minutes to etch. It’s very….very slow. It also makes a strong burning smell so be in a well vented room. Open a window and or put a small desk fan right on it. The built in fan isn’t strong enough. You can set contrast, etch depth so some items might need more etch depth to penetrate….test, test, test and always put a thick tray or wood board under this so just in case the laser happens to be set too powerful and you go thru the item….it can happen but not likely. ... show more

  • Get some protective eyeglasses before you use this thing.
This engraving machine does have a green protective plate in the front of it but not on the sides. I'd recommend purchasing some green safety glasses before you take this one for a ride. I do recommend my friends you'll be carving and making book ends. Thank you. God bless you and may the rest of your life be the best of your life. OZ ... show more

  • Just OK
I'm new to using a laser engraver so I've not had experience. The size of this machine is great however the software needs some improving. Especially for the mobile app. It has very limited functions.
