  • First beginner lathe
Size: 8" x 12"
The media could not be loaded. Addition: I have loved using the lathe. It is actually soothing and seeing your imagination take shape at your whim is very gratifying. The seller has been excellent. One piece was "bad" and the seller replaced in under 5 days! Wonderful communication with me and prompt service! Not a combination that is common these days. I hope they get more as this would be a great starter for the hobbyist that wants to give lathing a go. Two thumbs up!! New photo is of a handle I made my wife just messing around learning. She liked how it looked so I turned it into this handsome handle. Initial review starts below. Ps. Bumped rating for lathe from 4 to 5 stars. I am no stranger to equipment as I was an aircraft mechanic (sheet-metal worker) for many years. I am outfitting my own wood shop now and this is the latest addition to it. Woodworking is only a hobby, so I didn't want to go in debt buying an expensive machine for me to play with. I chose this model as it was reasonably priced and came with a few tools. Again, I have nothing to compare this with because I've never used a lathe before in my life. I've only watched a few videos online to learn the basics. Overall I would give this product of 3 1/2 to 4 stars I was kind and went 4 for the review. I really do not want to mislead anybody about this machine, however I feel it will serve my purposes just fine. If you're looking for an inexpensive small lathe to start out on this lathe should do just fine. I will update if I have any issues as others did with another model that looks very similar here on Amazon. However, I hope this to be a wonderful little machine for a long time to just do small projects on. Pros: Reasonably priced Comes with some basic tools Compact for smaller shops Variable speed control Cons: Mounting system requires you bolt the lathe from underneath into threaded mounting holes. Even though I followed the measurements supplied in the manual I still had to play with it a bit to make it line up. I feel a stand would be easier to work with. I mounted mine to an old piece of furniture. Construction could be better as I noticed at least one defect from the casting process (see the second picture). The paint is also chipping already. It happened before I used the machine or even attached it to the work surface. It is most likely to poor surface preparation before painting. The manual is very basic, so I suggest going online to learn the basics if you do not know them already. ... show more

  • Do not buy
Size: 8" x 12"
Do not waste your money on this slave, bought it to get back into making pens, and it was affordable worked well for the first couple of pens but as I started using it more and more, the late became unsafe the tail stock would not lock properly after two major problems that almost caused severe bodily harm I had to get rid of this lathe my advice is save your money and buy a quality machine just bought a brand new one from Penn State industries. The machine works flawlessly. ... show more

  • Well made and great for small jobs
Size: 12" x 18"
I built high end wood furniture and kitchens for over 45 years so I have owned several large lathes. I recently closed my business and moved to a small house so I needed a lathe that would not take up to much space and this fit the bill. The cons: The lathe is underpowered so it doesn’t work well for larger jobs. It is advertised as being able to do projects as large as 12”, but the motor just won’t handle something that big. It will do the job but it takes 4 times as long as it should. (I did have the tool rest break but that was after I modified the lathe to take a bigger motor, otherwise it would not have broken.) The pros: This lathe is pretty well made. Most of the components are well made and strong. I looked at a lot of lathes on Amazon and most of them for the same money were not made from cast parts but rather welded flimsy parts. The centers and chuck lined up on the money and the bearings had no play in them. I also like the variable speed motor. The photos that I am attaching of the chess pieces were made with the stock motor. The bowls were made after I converted the motor to a larger one. The lathe is made well enough to handle a bigger motor. If you are making small items like pens, chess pieces and small bowls I would recommend this lathe over all the others ones I found on amazon. ... show more

  • Excellent 12 by 18 medium sized lathe
Size: 12" x 18"
I have used this lathe for making large rolling pins, small chess pieces, pulleys, knobs and other random items. I maxed out with a giant 18" rolling pin blank which was almost 3.5" square out of jatoba, so it was super heavy and roughing it down made the motor work hard. I find the variable speed quite nice - I use it in the middle belt setting, which goes from 950 through 3000 RPM for me - I am going to try the highest belt setting and see how high the RPMs can go. I connected a Kill-a-Watt meter and observed when the motor was under heavy load of my carbide square roughing tool, it never measured above 300W power, 400VA....but it has a very slow refresh speed so it might not be the best judge of measuring motor horsepower. At the claimed 3/4 HP, this would be 746 * 0.75 = 560 Ws, but I have never observed that high. The spur center, live tailstock center and center plate are black steel, not pretty and shiny like Nova gear, but they get the job done. All standard measurements on this lathe - the threads on the headstock are the most common size, I forget the exact spec and the tapers in the headstock and tailstock are common MT2 - I was able to find a center screw and a higher quality live tailstock center as well as a Jacobs chuck very easily - I read somewhere that non-standard gear costs an arm and a leg so I was careful to select a lathe with very standard fittings. This lathe is identical to the one Grizzly sells for a lot more money and its well made and very heavy, I've not needed to bolt it down yet, but then I haven't tried turning big bowls on it yet, only spindle work till date. ... show more

  • No way to order spare belt misaligned a bit
Size: 12" x 18"
Headstock and tail stick a bit misaligned. Not by much. Seems like a good unit for the price. Has variable speed, digital speed indicator, all the cool stuff. Package was damaged in shipment, but ok inside. Deal breaker for me was I tried to order a spare drive belt. I couldn’t find the relevant customer service. I returned the item. If I can’t find parts now how would it be in a year or 2? ... show more
