  • Perfect to keep kids engaged during outside work
Style: Soft Touch Grips Grower's Set
Our family has a community garden spot and can't always get down to play in the dirt, but this lets us use our tiny back porch as a fun area that my kiddo can experiment and play in the dirt a little bit. The few plants I do have on my back porch aren't really available for my kid to dig in, so this really helps bring things down to their level for enjoyment. The set includes scissors, a shovel, a trowel, plant sign w/ some labels, and 3 pots. This is enough variety to let your kiddo tackle any job they want in the back yard. We really loved getting a small sunflower started in these pots and then transferring them to the garden for the season when they were big enough. I love that these are a thicker plastic and can be reused over and over. They can be packed with mud, have rocks dumped in them, they're just an overall good product. The only issue I had with this set was the scissors/shears, they weren't that functional and didn't really serve any safe purpose - they were loose at the point where they were attached and seemed too fiddly to really be functional. Overall, this is a great kit for home school, classrooms, or just keeping kids busy while you're doing some work in the back yard. ... show more

  • Cute but impractical, unless you are just making mud pies
Style: Soft Touch Grips Grower's Set
This set is super cute, but it does't make much sense. My 3 year old can plant fine with a real, small shovel. ~ Useless without potting mix, which they could have provided in the form of compressed pellets. ~ Useless without seeds, they could have easily provided a few for this year's model. Many seeds last several years. ~ Useless stickers, unless you buy seeds -- and it's impossible to grow carrots or sunflowers in these pots -- unless they expect you to transplant ~ Useless pots without drainage. They do have a little separator to put a gap on the bottom, but the target consume of little kids is not able to gauge water. A drainage hole and a saucer would make more sense. ~ Poor design of the shovels means they easily fall out of their handles. ~ Scissors are unnecessary, and surprisingly sharp. They are chubby but not really safety scissors. So you need to go to a garden supply store anyway for the dirt and the seeds, and while you are there, you could just buy 3 cheap pots, and 1 cheap shovel, and you'd have better quality. ... show more

  • Not a bad set for budding green thumbs
Style: Soft Touch Grips Grower's Set
Cute but basic gardening set for the six to 10 year old set, or even for an adult that wants to try to see if they can break their plant killing streak. The Good: - The little pots come with drainage disks which is good for plant health so the roots don't rot. - The trowel and shovel may be plastic, but they are made well enough that an adult could use them for potting plants, window boxes, porch/patio rail boxes, etc. - Tools have larger grips for small hands (or those with arthritis) to easily use. - The tools do not have any sharp metal edges and are pretty safe for a younger child to use (though the scissor blade burrs were bad enough to scratch). - Younger kids will love the stickers to decorate the pots. The Bad: - The scissors are pretty useless, even for paper. The ones in our kit had too many burrs on the blades to even cut paper. - The trowel and shovel may be sturdy, but they are too big for the included pots. You can use them to put dirt in, but not for any sort of delicate work or plant maintenance. - For $25, the cost for what you receive is too high as you can pick up the majority of this kit at any dollar store for half the cost. If the kit included a seed packets of something like easy to grow herbs or or flowers, compressed soil disks, maybe a small knee pad to get the recipient started, then I would say the cost is more appropriate. (Should you be planning to give this as a gift, you may wish to include some seed packets and soil disks.) - A rake/claw is not included. The Meh: - Rather than a little pad of paper for making supply lists, a better idea is a small journal for kids to use to track the progress of their plants from planting the seeds to being able to use the herbs/see the flowers bloom. - No direction and/or education booklet for kids who have never gardened before, so younger kids will need guidance. This isn't a solo project for little-little ones. It would have been nice to have something that explained the basics of planting, growth cycles, replanting a plant in a larger pot or outside when the plants get big, photosynthesis, how plants take in CO2 and give off oxygen, things like this. - The plant identification stakes are huge compared to the pots. Later on, though, they can provide support should the plant need it. ... show more

  • Cute and Safe
Style: Soft Touch Grips Grower's Set
I ordered this for my 7-year-old granddaughter, but I'm saving it for Christmas. It's nearly winter, so we really can't plant anything right now, except maybe herbs. She has a nice garden outside the kitchen window where we plant pretty flowers each year. In times past, she has felt left out because our regular tools are too dangerous for her, but I think she'll like and do well with this set, just fine. It comes with 3 pots (green, yellow, orange), a trowel, shovel, garden shears, garden markets and stickers. There are directions on how to grow avocados. One thing that really confused me were the two recipes that are included. I do realize you can cook with ingredients if your child grows food, I just found it odd that there were two recipes. None the less, I have no doubt my granddaughter will appreciate the fact that she can help without grandma worrying about her being hurt. ... show more

  • A lovely gift for a budding gardener
Style: Soft Touch Grips Grower's Set
My 5 year old loves to garden/get her hands dirty. I was worried with it being winter that we'd have to wait too long to use this set (start the plants too soon and you can't transplant them outside) but the kit came with easy to follow instructions on growing an avocado plant printed on the side. The tools themselves seem solidly built and the colors are appealing to a child of either gender. In fact our 2 year old keeps trying to run off with the tools and we've since had to move this out of his reach! This kit seems really well thought out and we look forward to really putting the tools to use come spring when we can garden outside. ... show more
