CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE CHAPTER ON "BASIC SKI SKILLS" NOW FROM CROSS- COUNTRY SKIING (Provide us with a little information and we'll send your download directly to your inbox) Technique demonstrated in step-by-step photos Special learning activities reinforce instruction Sidebars for trouble-shooting common problems and matching technique to terrain and snow conditions Tips for engaging the family From the first time you step into your bindings to mastering the stride, the glide, and the skate: Steve Hindman has you covered. As a certified instructor, he's introduced hundreds of people to the sport; he also wrote the study guide for the Professional Ski Instructors of America certification exam. Here he shares the same techniques he teaches on the snow, whether you're setting out for a city park, looking for family fun at a groomed ski area, or heading into the backcountry to set your own track. This comprehensive guide covers equipment and accessories, waxing for grip and glide, training and conditioning, snow camping, route finding, and avalanche awareness. It will take you from how to fall (and how to get up again), through the classic and skate skiing basics (including stance, poling principles, and downhill tactics), to effective racing technique. It also takes up more advanced variations of the sport-freeheel, telemark, and ski mountaineering. Read more

  • comprehensive
I got this book to prepare for a job at a nordic center as an instructor, rentals assistant, etc. As it turned out, it was the same book my workplace already had and recommended I read. Lots of well presented advice and pictures on classic and nordic form as well as teaching tips. There's also a great introduction to ski types, mechanics, and waxing. ... show more

  • CC Skiing refresher
I haven't been on CC Skis for 40 years, so it was fair to say I needed to brush up a bit. This was a well laid out book and covered all the basics I was looking for. I would recommend it.

  • Introduction to cross-country skiing
This winter will be my first cross-country adventure. Very different from alpine skiing so I was looking for a good overview. This book covers the entire subject. Introduces, but is not intended to teach details of waxing and detailed techniques. Outstanding introduction. Also convinced me to start with lessons even if an experienced downhill skier. ... show more

  • Great book
As in all of this book series, it is very informative and well written. You can't go wrong with the Mountaineer outdoor expert books.

  • Still a useful resource for folks trying to gain cross country skills
A solid review resource but sometimes uses phrases and descriptions that are not that obvious for the learning skier I think. Still a useful resource for folks trying to gain cross country skills!
