  • Better than a cheap miter box
I got this to replace a nearly identical model that's at least 10 or 15 years old and has been through hell and back and it finally gave up hopefully this one will last as long as the other one did I definitely wouldn't use it for precision cuts but it's about as accurate as one could expect And will do great for small trim projects etc. ... show more

  • worked for me
I don't know much about these tools, but I bought it because I had 8 chair legs to cut, and I wanted a clean cut and the ability to bundle them into pairs. I'm not going to use it very often, but I can't stand those plastic boxes, so I decided to give this a try. It was easy to assemble and stable. It worked great for my little job. The blade has a much longer stroke than a miter box and the cut was smooth. It was easy to secure the legs into place. I have no complaints. ... show more

  • Better than plastic, but it's not fully accurate and has other flaws
I needed a precision mitre box to make "perfectly" square cuts in some 3/4 x 2 inch hardwood lumber. I had hoped that this Craftsman Miter Box (CMHT20800) would fulfill this need. It comes close, but still below expectations. Issues: 1) The angle adjustment cannot be clamped in place, but instead relies on a spring-loaded plunger that allows a tiny "wiggle" instead of a rock-solid setting. The first two photos show this. The angle wiggle is about a half of a degree, which may seem small, but when cutting across even 2 inches of wood this results in a cut that's noticeably off-true. 2) The blade does not cut precisely vertically, but instead veers a tiny bit from true up-and-down. The third and fourth pictures show the same piece of wood after one cut. The third photo shows the two pieces butted up against each other "as cut", and they fit nicely. However, turn one piece over and butt them together, (photo 4) and you can see the small gap. (Wood is only 3/4 inch thick.) If the cut were exactly perpendicular, both photos should show a perfect alignment. Photos 5 and 6 show the results of a vertical 2-inch cut. Same results, but the gap is more obvious. 3) The blade also wiggles in it's holder, left-and-right about 1/8 of an inch. This effect contributes to the less-than-perfect angles and also the vertical bending. It's possible to partially compensate for this effect through very careful posture (stand rock steady and not changing the angles your arms make to the saw). 4) The blade dulled quickly. I made about 100 cuts through my 3/4 x 2 inch wood pieces, and the last cut took about twice as long as the first cut. Not a deal breaker, and frankly I don't know if this kind of wear should be expected or not, but I was surprised. Other minor issues: 5) The little rubber feet are hopeless in keeping the mitre unit firm on the workbench. Fortunately, the unit has pre-drilled holes in the feet, so I got a big piece of flat plywood, screwed the mitre base to the plywood, and then clamped the plywood to my workbench. Problem solved. 6) The underside of the mitre base is ribbed for strength, and in fact the base is rock-solid with no flexing. However, the ribs are of different dimensions vertically, making it difficult to clamp wood in the vertical dimension. I intend to epoxy some hardwood pieces to the underside in order to have a good clamping surface, which should fix this issue. 7) The little clamping dowels that are supplied with the unit are useless. I ended up using 3 or 4 F-Clamps to secure the wood to the mitre base. 8) It would have been nice if the height of the cutting base were exactly 3.5 inches above the base of the feet, which would then have allowed the use of ordinary 2x4s to support the weight of long pieces (which is definitely required in order to get good cuts!) BOTTOM LINE: This unit is a big step up from the cheap boxes with pre-cut holes, and I think the price point is pretty good (hence 4 stars). But I will be looking to buy a higher-quality mitre box for my next project. ... show more

  • The blade on this is not good.
Blade that comes with this is not good it does not cut even 1 inch thick molding Efficiently. I cannot believe the amount of effort involved in cutting a couple of 45s and some window molding I did. The other problem is the vertical rods Anchor into the frame base And hold the saw framework in secure are not super stable even with the steel pins torqued down good. Between trying to find a replacement blade for it and the disappointment I've experienced I wish I had spent some more money and gotten a Stanley which was more money. ... show more

  • No school like the old school.
For the new woodworker just getting started, or even professional carpenters who want to add that special touch to their craftsmanship, this is a great addition to your tool shed. Sure, most people want or need a powered miter saw for everyday work. But there are those times when a certain project requires a special fineness and finesse a powered miter saw just cannot deliver. Safely or otherwise. I bought this tool to cut small trim and crown molding. Still waiting on crown, but I have used it cutting trim and I am 100% fully satisfied, not only with the quality of the tool, but in the way it performs flawlessly. This box miter saw is built from steel construction and was a fraction the cost of other similar products made with plastic. Plastic... Are you kidding me? - LOL And made by Craftsman. I'mm 66 and have used their tools repeatedly on and off since my first job at 15. Back in 1973. I can safely feel comfortable in recommending this to anyone, even if you don't need one. It definitely adds a classic touch to your workshop and will probably draw many comments from others around you. I display mne proudly on top of my 4"x4" rolling tool cabinet. ... show more

  • Good directions, simple, easy to follow!
I found this tool easy to assemble. Once accomplished, I tried a test cut. The wood separated very smooth. The 90⁰ cut is fast and accurate. I am pleased w/ my new acquisition!

  • Good product bad shipping and support.
This miter saw and table are quite nice for the price. Problem is it was shipped with a broken part. Most of the parts are metal and easy to assemble. However the two parts that hold the saw vertical in the miter box as you draw the saw back and forth are made of thin plastic and one was broken making the saw useless. I tried to get hold of the Craftsman company to replace the part. But could not get hold of anyone or leave a message. The answering service was a recording that just kept trying to sell me some item I was not interested in. I just wanted to get the broken part replaced. I gave up and returned the miter box and got a cheap saw and plastic box. It took 10 days to receive the Craftsman Miter box. I could not wait any longer. I needed it for cutting thin trim that my power miter saw tends to shatter. Oh and the shipping box had no packing and all the parts (which you have to assemble) were just sliding around in the box. ... show more

  • Craftsman still makes great hand tools
I have always been partial to Craftsman hand tools because of the quality and the guarantee. They stand by their hand tools and will always get my business. Also, this miter box saw is far superior to the ones that I bought previously which had a plastic miter box. I did not know that craftsman till made this tool until I saw it on Amazon. ... show more
