  • One of the best kept secrets for an affordable axe.
Collins does a wonderful forging job on this axe. It has an even hardness behind the bit. Soft enough to sharpen fast, and hard enough to get very sharp. If you take the factory axe and put a little effort into it, you will have very nice axe. As soon as it arrived I took it out to the shop and put it on the belt grinder to smooth out the grinding marks on the cheeks, and thin the bit or edge down with progressively finer belts to get a thinner profile, and a fairly shiny surface. Although very capable of felling trees, I'll be using this one to rough in logs for hewing timbers before I bring out the Gransfors Bruk hewing axe. I sure wish Collins would bring back their hewing axes again... ... show more

  • Great Dayton Pattern Axe at any Cost
This is my second Council Tool axe. My first was a Jersey pattern axe. This Dayton pattern is similar. The 3-1/2 pound head is nice for working on bigger trees. The 36" curved handle feels good in hand and has excellant grain orientation. There is almost no runout. The handle is worth half the cost of the axe! I repainted the red paint (it will wear off anyway) and finished the handle with boiled linseed oil. I added a leather collar and mask. This is a good quality tool! ... show more

  • Awesome Made In The USA Axe
Superlative made in the USA craftsmanship. Comes sharp, and the edge lasts well. The handle is wax coated. The milled curvature of the handle makes cutting nearly fatigue free and permits powerful swings from this relatively light-weight 3.5 lb. head. I'm not sure if the red paint serves a function, but i like it just for the pizazz factor. From what I understand, Council Tool is the number one provider of hand axes to fire departments. Those axes cost 2-3 times what this one does, and my understanding is there are two primary differences: included sheaths and different handle coating. But what kind of strange name is "Council Tool?" The last name of the guy who founded the company way back when was "Council." It's an unusual last name, but explains the company's name. ... show more

  • Axe head broke off within the first 30 minutes of use.
I bought this axe to upgrade from the husky axe I had from Home Depot. Within the first 30 minutes of use cutting down small trees 4-6” thick, the axe head broke off, while my cheaper husky axe has been doing great for over a year on various different trunk sizes and conditions. Won’t be buying again unfortunately. ... show more

  • Great Value
I am quite impressed with the quality of this axe. It arrived with a servicable edge, better than most hardware store axes but not up to my standard. I sharpened it on my belt sander to hair popping sharp. Yes I do know axes don't need to be this sharp but I wanted to see if it would take that good of an edge and how long it would last. So far I have fell 5 trees, 2 ash and 3 white burch, with very little edge degradation. It won't easily shave hair cleanly off my arm but it will still shave. That level of quality steel at this price point has impressed me. The finish and my axe is not at the same level as my Gransfor but the performance is almost identical. I would definitely recommend this American made axe to anyone who wants to fell a tree by hand. If you want to split wood I wouldn't recommend this as there are much more effective head designs out there for splitting than the Dayton head. ... show more

  • Didn't Know I Needed This...
What a great axe, has good build quality, a solid feel, good chopper, and while it's technically not a splitter, it does a very good job of splitting. The only gripe is the handle has a satin finish, it's still pretty grippy, but I'll probably remove the clear coat.
